An essay is a short piece of writing on a specific subject. It presents ideas in an organized way.

Essays can be written to:

1.3 The Writing Process

Writing a good essay takes steps:

Step 1 – Planning

Decide your purpose: Is it to entertain? Inform? Persuade?

Make an outline of your main ideas.


Example: If the topic is “My Best Friend”, you might outline:

1. Introduction – how we met

2. Body – their personality, our activities

3. Conclusion – why they are special to me

Step 2 – Drafting

Write your first version without worrying about mistakes.

Just focus on getting your ideas down.
