Project Title: Sustainable Coastal Community Resilience: Supporting Filipino Fishermen
Through Climate-Smart Practices
Introduction:
Coastal areas in the Philippines are very sensitive to the effects of climate change, such as rising
sea levels, more frequent storms, and changes in fish populations. This project aims to help
Filipino fishermen and their communities become more prepared and stronger by teaching
climate-friendly fishing methods, improving access to tools and support, and building stronger
community-based plans to deal with climate risks. The project supports global goals, especially
those focused on climate action, reducing poverty, and creating sustainable jobs.
Problem Statement:
Effects of Climate Change: Filipino fishermen face big problems due to changing weather,
fewer fish, and damage to their equipment from strong storms.
Lack of Resources: Many fishermen don’t have enough training, tools, or money to switch to
better, more sustainable fishing methods.
Weak Community Groups: Many coastal communities are not well organized and don’t have
enough information to work together in facing climate problems.
Project Goals and Objectives:
Goal: To help coastal communities in the Philippines deal with climate change by teaching
fishermen safer, smarter ways to fish and supporting strong local action.
Objectives:
• Teach fishermen how to fish in ways that protect the environment and use resources wisely.
•Help fishermen get better tools and equipment, like energy-saving boats and nets.
• Create local groups that manage fishing areas together in a fair and sustainable way.
• Make and follow local plans to handle climate risks like rising seas and strong storms.
• Give fishermen access to small loans so they can start or improve sustainable fishing and
recover from disasters.
Project Activities:
Phase 1: Community Study and Involvement (3 months): Learn about each community’s needs
and involve them in planning.
Phase 2: Training and Equipment Support (6 months): Hold workshops on climate-friendly
fishing and give access to better tools.
Phase 3: Organizing and Resource Planning (6 months): Help form local groups to manage
fishing resources and create clear plans.
Phase 4: Planning for Climate Change (6 months):Work with communities to make and carry
out plans to deal with local climate problems.
Phase 5: Financial Support and Livelihood Help (6 months): Provide small loans and help
develop other income sources to reduce full dependence on fishing.
Phase 6: Progress Check and Reporting (3 months): Track the project’s results and prepare a
final report.
Target Beneficiaries:
• Small-scale fishermen and their families in selected coastal areas.
• Local groups working in fishing and coastal protection.
• Local government offices handling fishing and environmental care.
Project Duration: 30 months
Budget: A full budget will be created, including training, tools, technical help, microloans, and
progress tracking.
Evaluation Plan:
Success will be measured by:
• More fishermen learning and using climate-smart fishing methods.
• Healthier fish populations and marine environments.
• Stronger local groups managing resources well.
• Communities being less at risk from climate problems.
• Better incomes and living conditions for fishermen and their families.
