different styles. You can usually tell the period and style
different times in history and therefore followed
characteri stics, such as colours, lines, the subject of the piece, lighting, brush
of a painting from certain
strokes, etc.

1 Match the paintings in the text to the descriptions of the different art movements.
Movement Description Artwork
Cubism Artists uses little cubes and other shapes. Objects and people are often
painted from many different angles and in different shades of a colour.
Impressionism Artists uses bold colours, and thick dabs and blobs of paint. There are
no clear outlines or much details, with one colour blending into the next
and almost no boundaries between them. These paintings are mainly
of outdoor scenes and often play on images of fog, sunlight, clouds and
reflections on water.
Pop Art These art pieces show commonplace objects and recognisable imagery,
and artists make use of bright colours, innovative techniques, mixed media
and collage.
Renaissance Art This was the first time in history that artists represented the world in
a three-dimensional, realistic manner, using techniques to give their
paintings a sense of depth. Subjects were mostly religious. Non-religious
paintings tended to be individual portraits.

Writing recipes

When we write recipes, first we write the name of the dish, then we list the ingredients and measurements. Then,
we use the imperative to write the instructions. It is useful to add a picture of the dish.
‘Family Recipe Day’
We organise the directions to make the recipe by using connectors: First, then, after this, etc. Let’s complete the Project!
