Introduction

In today’s modern world, social media has become an essential part of daily life, especially
for young people. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and Facebook are widely
used by teenagers and young adults for communication, entertainment, and self-expression.
While social media offers many benefits, it also raises serious concerns about its effects on
youth behavior, mental health, and social interactions. This issue is highly relevant because
a large percentage of young people spend several hours daily online, shaping how they
think, act, and view the world. According to a report by Common Sense Media (2021),
teenagers spend an average of more than 7 hours a day on screens, which shows how
serious this issue is. Understanding both the positive and negative impacts of social media is
important, as it influences not only individuals but also society as a whole.
Causes of the Issue
One of the main causes behind the growing impact of social media on youth is the rapid
advancement of technology. Smartphones and affordable internet access have made it
easier than ever for young people to stay connected at all times. In countries like Pakistan,
internet usage has increased significantly in recent years, allowing even teenagers in smaller
cities to actively use social media (DataReportal, 2024).
Another major cause is the desire for social acceptance and validation. Many young users
post pictures, videos, and opinions online in order to gain likes, comments, and followers.
Research shows that receiving likes on social media can activate the brain’s reward system,
making users feel happy and encouraging repeated behavior (Sherman et al., 2016). This
creates a sense of competition and sometimes pressure to maintain a certain image, which
can affect self-esteem.
Peer influence also plays an important role. When friends and classmates are active on
social media, others feel the need to join in order to stay connected and not feel left out. This
can lead to excessive usage, even when it starts affecting studies or personal life. In some
cases, young people dont even realize how much time they are spending online.
Additionally, the lack of awareness about digital literacy contributes to the issue. Many users
are not fully aware of the risks associated with social media, such as cyberbullying, privacy
concerns, and misinformation. Without proper guidance, youth may misuse these platforms
or become victims of harmful online behavior.
Perspective 1: Social Media as a Positive Influence (Global View)
From a global perspective, many people argue that social media has a positive impact on
youth. It provides opportunities for learning, creativity, and global connection. Young
individuals can access educational content, tutorials, and news from around the world,
helping them stay informed and develop new skills.
For example, platforms like YouTube are widely used for educational purposes. According to
Pew Research Center (2022), a majority of teenagers say they use YouTube to learn new
things or improve skills. Social media also allows young people to express their talents,
whether it is through art, music, or writing. Some individuals have even built successful
careers through online platforms.
Another advantage is that social media connects people across different cultures and
countries. This helps promote understanding and awareness of global issues such as
climate change, human rights, and education. Youth are able to participate in discussions
and movements that were not easily accessible before.
Supporters of social media also believe that it gives a voice to individuals who may
otherwise feel unheard. It allows young people to share their opinions, raise awareness, and
stand up for causes they believe in. In this sense, social media can be empowering and
beneficial when used responsibly.
Perspective 2: Social Media as a Negative Influence (Local / Individual View)
On the other hand, many people, especially at a local and individual level, see social media
as harmful to youth. One of the biggest concerns is its impact on mental health. Studies
have shown that excessive use of social media can lead to anxiety, depression, and low
self-esteem. For instance, a study by Twenge et al. (2018) found that teenagers who spend
more time online are more likely to report mental health issues.
Cyberbullying is another serious issue. According to UNICEF (2020), about 1 in 3 young
people in different countries have experienced some form of online bullying. This can deeply
affect emotional well-being and confidence. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can
happen at any time and is difficult to escape.
Social media also affects academic performance. Students may spend hours scrolling
through content instead of focusing on studies, leading to poor results. In some cases,
addiction to social media becomes a real problem, where individuals find it difficult to control
their usage.
In Pakistan and similar societies, cultural values can also be influenced by social media.
Exposure to unrealistic lifestyles and foreign trends may create confusion among youth
about their identity and values. Parents and elders often worry that social media is changing
the behavior of younger generations in negative ways.
Another issue is the spread of misinformation. Many young users believe everything they
see online without verifying facts, which can lead to misunderstandings and wrong decisions.
This shows the importance of awareness and education regarding responsible use of social
media.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the impact of social media on youth is a complex issue with both positive and
negative aspects. While it provides opportunities for learning, creativity, and global
connection, it also presents risks such as mental health problems, cyberbullying, and
addiction. The effects largely depend on how social media is used and the level of
awareness among users.
To address this issue, it is important for individuals, families, and governments to work
together. Schools should educate students about digital responsibility, while parents should
guide their children on balanced usage. At the same time, social media companies should
take steps to create safer online environments.
Overall, social media is not entirely good or bad—it is a powerful tool that must be used
wisely. If managed properly, it can benefit youth and help them grow, but if ignored, it can
create serious challenges for individuals and society.
