ASE342 Tutorial3

The document is a tutorial for ASE 342 focusing on oblique shock waves in air, providing a series of questions related to shock angles, velocity components, temperature, pressure, and flow conditions before and after shocks. It includes calculations for various scenarios involving different Mach numbers and deflection angles. The tutorial aims to enhance understanding of the behavior of supersonic flows in relation to oblique shocks.

ASE 342 – Tutorial 3 [Oblique Shock Waves and Related Topics]

Q1) For a two-dimensional oblique shock wave in air where M1 = 2.0 and the deflection angle is 10o,
calculate the possible shock angles in degrees.

Q2) An oblique shock forms in ait at an angle of 30o. Before passing through the shock the air has a
temperature of 15.6 oC, a pressure of 0.69 bar, and is travelling at M = 2.6.

(a) Compute the normal and tangential velocity components before and after the shock.

(b) Determine the temperature and pressure after the shock.

(c) What is the deflection angle?

Q3) Conditions before a shock are T1 = 40oC, p1 = 1.2 bar, M1 = 3.0. An oblique shock is observed at 45o
to the approaching flow.

(a) Determine the Mach number and flow direction after the shock.

(b) Determine the temperature and pressure after the shock.

(c) Is this a weak or strong shock?

Q4) The supersonic flow of air approaches a wedge with a half-angle 24o.

(a) What Mach number will put the shock on the verge of detaching?

(b) Is this value a minimum or a maximum?
