PART 1. MAIN DISCUSSION
1. What technologies do you use every day that you can’t live without?
I use smartphones, the internet, messaging apps, and social media almost
every day. These technologies help me communicate, study, access
information, and stay connected with the world. Without them, many
everyday tasks would become slower, harder, or impossible.
2. Do you think technology makes us more human or less human? Why?
Technology can make us more human when it helps us connect, express
emotions, and improve our lives. But it can also make us less human when it
replaces real interactions or makes us dependent. It depends on how we use
it responsibly or excessively.
3. Can machines ever understand emotions?
Machines can recognize patterns, facial expressions, and tone, but they don’t
actually feel emotions. They can simulate empathy, but genuine emotional
understanding requires human experiences, which machine does not have.
A. THE INTERSECTION OF HUMANITY AND TECHNOLOGY
• How does technology reflect human creativity and emotion?
Technology is a product of human imagination. Every invention from art
apps to robots shows our creativity, problem-solving, and desire to express
ourselves. Technology reflects our emotions because we design it to
communicate love, sadness, humor, curiosity, and inspiration.
• In what ways do humans depend on technology today?
• Physically:
– Medical machines save lives
– Transportation makes movement easier
– Tools and devices make work faster
• Mentally:
– Search engines provide instant information
– Apps help us learn and remember
– AI can support decision-making
•Emotionally:
– Social media and messaging connect us to loved ones
– Entertainment helps relieve stress
– Online communities provide support
• Are we crossing a line with technologies like AI brain implants or genetic
editing?
These technologies can cure diseases and improve lives, but they also raise
moral questions. If we change too much of what makes us human, we might
lose our identity. Society needs careful rules to ensure these advancements
are used ethically and safely.
B. ETHICAL AND SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS
Should there be limits to technological innovation?
Yes. Without limits, technology could harm people, invade privacy, or create
inequality. Limits ensure safety, fairness, and responsibility.
• Who should decide what “ethical technology” means?
- The definition of ethical technology should be decided by a
combination of scientists, governments, and society as a whole.
Scientists understand how the technology works and what its effects
might be. Governments create laws to protect citizens and maintain
order. Society, meanwhile, represents the people who will actually use
and be affected by these innovations. When all three groups work
together, ethical decisions become more balanced, fair, and inclusive.
• How can we make sure technology serves humanity rather than controls it?
- To ensure that technology serves humanity rather than controls it, we
need strong ethical guidelines, transparent decision-making, and
responsible use. Governments and companies should create clear rules
that protect human rights and privacy, while schools should teach
people how to use technology wisely. Technology companies must be
honest about how their systems work, and users must remain aware
and critical of the tools they depend on. When these safeguards are in
place, technology becomes a tool that empowers people instead of
limiting them.
C. PERSONAL REFLECTION
• How has technology changed the way you express yourself or connect with
others?
- Technology allows me to share thoughts, photos, messages, and
creativity instantly. It helps me connect with people far away and
express myself in ways that were impossible before, like using videos,
emojis, or online platforms.
• Would you want to live in a world where humans and machines merge
completely? Why or why not?
- I wouldn't want full merging because it might erase human
individuality and emotions. Machines are useful, but being human
means having natural experiences, imperfections, and freedom.
Technology should help us-not replace us.
“CROSSROADS”
1. A company develops an AI that can feel empathy. Should it have
rights?
If the AI truly feels empathy like a human, it raises ethical questions. It may
deserve basic rights, but careful testing and regulations are needed to avoid
misuse.
2. A person replaces 70% of their body with robotic parts. Are they still
human?
Yes, because humanity is defined by consciousness and identity, not just the
physical body. As long as they think and feel like a human, they remain
human.
3. Technology allows people to upload their minds to a computer. Is this
immortality?
It might preserve memories and personality, but it is not true immortality
because the physical human life still ends. It creates a digital version, not the
original person.
Wrap-Up Question: What responsibilities do we have as humans when we
create and use powerful technologies?
We must use technology responsibly, protect privacy, prevent harm, ensure
fairness, and always put human dignity first. It is our duty to use innovation
to improve life-not to control, divide, or damage society.
Reflection Task:
Humanity and technology can work together by using innovation to solve
important problems in the world. Technology should be developed with
responsibility so that it improves human life instead of harming it. When
people use technology wisely, it can help us communicate better, learn
faster, and work more efficiently. It is important that humans guide
technology with ethics, compassion, and fairness. If we balance progress
with responsibility, humanity and technology can build a safer and better
future for everyone.
