Some cities create housing areas by providing taller buildings.

Others create
housing by building houses on a wider area of land. Which solution is
better?
Building styles have always been a controversial topic among the public and
policy makers in today’s sophisticated world. Although some people argue
that it is effective to construct houses in a horizontal layout, I firmly contend
that multiple-storey buildings would be more viable.
On the one hand, proponents of expansive, low-rise housing believe that such
an approach could ensure a safe environment for residents. If there is an
emergency situation taking place in these types of houses, citizens are likely
to find it easy to handle it. Take house fire as a prime example. Housing areas
enlarged in a horizontal direction facilitate the possibility of DWELLERS escaping
and reduce the risk of injury. This building style, therefore, partly ensures
people’s lives when urgent solutions would be needed. However, I argue that
these concerns are being overemphasized. In fact, current tall buildings have
been carefully equipped with modern fire-alarming systems, emergency exit
gates, and safety equipment. This will NOT ONLY minimize the risk of people
being burnt BUT ALSO provide effective escape routes and protection for
residents during emergencies.
On the other hand, I contend that designing houses on a vertical side would
save spaces for overpopulated cities. For instance, during a 2019 survey on
building houses in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, nearly 90% of people said
that they preferred multi-floor apartments because apartment rental rates
are lower than the total cost of buying the land and building private houses. If
tall buildings had not been constructed, they would probably have paid for
overpriced flats. Moreover, empty spaces would make room for the
investment of transportation, recreational places, and public infrastructure.
This considerably promotes open spaces towards smart cities, enhancing their
living standards.
In conclusion, while houses in a wide area would benefit people in terms of
some specific emergency cases, I still believe that high-rise buildings would be
more optimal thanks to their potential for overall city development.
Hopefully, policymakers would make wise decisions on planning innovative
buildings in the future to make people’s lives better.
