FINAL REFLECTION
Taking Linguistics 2 with Mrs Thuy Vu this semester has honestly been one of the
classes I enjoyed the most. At first, I thought it would be a heavy, theory-based
subject, but it turned out to be much more fun, engaging, and meaningful because of
the way you delivered the knowledge. The way you taught the lessons, always
cheerful, relaxed, and full of insight, made the concepts feel less scary and a lot easier
to understand.
When I look back at what I learned from you, I’m honestly surprised by how much it
has changed the way I see language and even the way I see people. I didn’t just pick
up information; I learned a whole set of skills that I suddenly find myself using all the
time. I learned how to unpack meaning instead of taking things at face value, how to
sense the difference between what someone says and what they truly mean, and how
to notice the little details that keep a conversation flowing. Even everyday behaviors,
word choices, tone, pauses, softening, started to feel like meaningful clues rather than
random habits. And once I start noticing these things, I can’t unsee them. They follow
me everywhere: in conversations, in texts, even on social media.
A big part of this transformation came from the way you taught. You didn’t make us
feel like we were sitting in a “serious academic environment” where everything had to
be formal and heavy. Instead, you brought this warm, humorous, and almost
comforting energy into every lesson. You explained things with a lightness that made
complicated ideas feel friendly, and all your stories made everything easier to imagine
and remember. I never felt overwhelmed, even when the topics were tricky, because
you always had a way of breaking things down so naturally. I still remember all your
stories that teach us how to love, how to flirt, how to earn money, and how to deal
with social problems because it was really impressive. I just thought that Ulis lectures
are always strict, and focus only on their teaching, but you just like a “new wind” to
me, and I really admire your style. I appreciate all the lessons you teach us, and hope
to become a person like you in the future.

I know that three months is nowhere near enough to fully understand everything about
language. Linguistics is huge, messy, complex, sometimes chaotic and definitely not
something anyone can master in one semester. There were moments when I felt like
my brain was chasing the concepts and still a step behind. But instead of feeling
discouraged, I feel motivated. You made the subject feel alive, and you reminded us
that learning something this big takes time, patience, and curiosity.
Looking ahead, I can already see how the things I learned in this course will keep
showing up in my daily life and even in my future goals. The way I analyze
conversations now makes me more aware and more intentional when I communicate. I
feel like I understand people better, not just through their words, but through their
choices, tone, and patterns. I want to keep developing this skill because I know it will
help me in any environment, whether it’s academic work, teamwork, or navigating
friendships and relationships.
I also want to take the curiosity you sparked and turn it into something long-term. I
feel more confident now about exploring academic research that is related to
linguistics, or at least starting small reading papers, trying out simple analyses, or just
staying curious enough to keep learning. More importantly, I want to hold on to the
mindset you helped build in me: to stay curious, pay attention, think deeper, and
communicate with intention and empathy. I know that the things you taught us won’t
stay in the classroom. They’ll follow me into the way I listen, the way I speak, the
way I study, and the way I understand the world moving forward and I’m genuinely
excited to see where that takes me.
So when I think about this course, it feels more like a journey than a subject. I laughed
a lot, learned even more, and walked away each week with something new like a skill,
an insight, a little push to think deeper. You made the classroom feel like a place
where learning wasn’t just about completing requirements, but about growing as a
person. I truly appreciate the way you encouraged us, challenged us, and inspired us
without ever making things feel heavy. This class has left a real impact on me, and I

know the things I’ve learned and the passion you helped spark will stay with me for a
long time.
