Design of Roof top Rainwater harvesting
Designing a rooftop rainwater harvesting (RWH) system for Sai Kirupa apartment G+2
building (~9 m of total height) in Baby Nagar, Velachery, Chennai.
Consider the following:
1. Catchment Area: Use the provided building dimension (34 m× 18m) and calculate the
total potential for rainwater collection, assuming a flat roof or a roof having 1-2% of
slope with runoff coefficient of 0.85.

2. Water Demand Analysis: The G+2 building has 5 households on each floor. Each household
consists of an average of 3 persons. Water requirement is mentioned in Table 2, calculate the
volume of storage tanks required.
Table: 2 Per capita consumptions of water for domestic use (as per the norms of Central
Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organization)
Activities Litres/Person/day
Drinking 3
Cooking 4
Bathing 20
Flushing 40
Washing Cloths 25
Washing utensils 20
Gardening 23
3. System Components: Design the system to include necessary components like storage
tanks, gutters (Diameter and width – Refer Table: 3 from IS 15797: 2008)), down pipe
(Diameter, Quantity and Length), first flush mechanisms, filtration systems, and infiltration pit.
Specify dimensions and materials for each component.
Hint: Assume rainfall intensity of 11 mm/hr. Select the velocity of water (roof) as per CGWB
guidelines for flat roofs or roofs having 1-2% of slope. Select standard pipe diameters and
length available in the market. Assume number of dry days in a year as 118 days.
4. Cost estimation: Estimate the cost of the Rainwater harvesting system including material
charges (PVC down pipe, Bend pipe, T pipe, Valves, Gutter pipe, Filtration Tank, First Flush
Tank, Concrete M30), excavation charges, infiltration pit construction charges, transportation
charges, labor charges and other miscellaneous. Assume reasonable unit prices for each
component based on current market rates.
