What is Development?

Development means improvement in the quality of life. Different people have different goals and needs.

Different Goals of People

• Farmer → better crop and good price


• Student → good education and job
• Worker → high salary and security

What is development for one person may not be development for another.

Income and Other Goals

Income is important but people also want:


• Respect
• Equality
• Freedom
• Security
• Healthy environment

National Development

National development means development of the whole country. It includes economic growth, equality, education,
health and public welfare.

Per Capita Income

Average income of a country is called Per Capita Income.

Formula:
Per Capita Income = Total Income ÷ Total Population

Why Average Income is Used?

It helps to compare countries properly because total income alone does not show real condition.

Public Facilities
Facilities provided by the government for people are called public facilities.

Examples:
• Schools
• Hospitals
• Roads
• Electricity
• Water supply

Human Development Report (HDR)

Prepared by UNDP. It compares countries on the basis of:


• Health
• Education
• Income

Sustainable Development

Development that fulfills present needs without harming future generations is called sustainable development.

• HDI → Human Development Index


• IMR → Infant Mortality Rate
• Literacy Rate → Percentage of educated people
• Life Expectancy → Average life span
