⚙️FORCES – COMPLETE CHEAT SHEET
(GRADE 6)
🌍 WHAT IS A FORCE?
A force is a push or pull
Forces can:
o start or stop movement
o change speed or direction
o change shape
🌐 TYPES OF FORCES
🌍 GRAVITY
A force that pulls objects towards the Earth
Always acts downwards
Gives objects weight
👉 Example: falling object 🍎
✋ FRICTION
A force that slows movement between surfaces
Acts in the opposite direction of motion
👉 Example: bike brakes 🚲
💨 AIR RESISTANCE (DRAG)
Friction in air
Slows moving objects in air
👉 Example: parachute 🪂
💧 WATER RESISTANCE
Friction in water
Slows objects moving through water
🧲 MAGNETIC FORCE
Force that can attract or repel
Works without touching
🚀 THRUST
A force that pushes objects forward
Produced by engines, propellers, or movement
👉 Example:
rocket launching 🚀
airplane engines ✈️
🌊 BUOYANCY (UPTHRUST)
🌊 WHAT IS BUOYANCY?
A force that makes objects float in water or air
It is also called upthrust
⬆️UPTHRUST
The upward force exerted by a liquid or gas
Acts opposite to gravity
⚖️HOW FLOATING WORKS
If upthrust > weight → object floats
If weight > upthrust → object sinks
👉 Example:
ship floating 🚢
stone sinking 🪨
⚖️BALANCED & UNBALANCED FORCES
⚖️Balanced forces
Forces are equal
No change in motion
🚀 Unbalanced forces
Forces are not equal
Causes movement or change
📏 MASS vs WEIGHT
⚖️Mass
Amount of matter
Measured in kg or g
🌍 Weight
Force caused by gravity
Measured in Newtons (N)
⭐ KEY EXAM POINTS
✔ Force = push or pull
✔ Gravity pulls down
✔ Friction slows movement
✔ Thrust pushes objects forward
✔ Buoyancy (upthrust) makes objects float
✔ Floating depends on upthrust vs weight
✔ Balanced = no change
✔ Unbalanced = change in motion
🚀 1. ROCKET (THRUST + GRAVITY + AIR RESISTANCE)
↑ Air resistance (small)
|
🚀 ROCKET
|
↓ Gravity (weight)
↑↑↑↑↑
Thrust (large force pushing up)
⭐ Key idea:
Thrust > Gravity → rocket goes up
Air resistance slows it slightly
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🚢 2. BOAT (BUOYANCY / UPTHRUST)
↑ Upthrust (buoyancy)
↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑
┌─────────────┐
│ 🚢 │
└─────────────┘
↓ Weight (gravity)
⭐ Key idea:
Boat floats when upthrust = weight or upthrust > weight
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

🪂 3. PARACHUTE (AIR RESISTANCE)
↑ Air resistance (large)
↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑
🪂 Parachute
|
↓ Gravity (weight)
⭐ Key idea:
Large surface area = more air resistance
This makes it fall slowly
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🍎 4. FALLING OBJECT
↓ Gravity (weight)
↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓
🍎 Apple
↑ Air resistance (small)
⭐ Key idea:
Gravity pulls object down
Air resistance is usually small (unless shape is large)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🚗 1. CAR (MOVING FORWARD)
↑ Normal reaction (road support)
|
Friction ← 🚗 → Driving force (engine)
|
↓ Gravity (weight)
Air resistance acts backwards ←
⭐ Key idea:
Car moves forward when driving force > friction + air resistance
🚲 2. BICYCLE
↑ Normal reaction
|
Friction ← 🚲 → Pedalling force
|
↓ Gravity
Air resistance ←
⭐ Key idea:
Pedalling creates thrust (forward force)
Friction slows the wheels and road contact
🪂 3. SKYDIVER
↑ Air resistance (increases as speed increases)
↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑
🪂
|
↓ Gravity (weight)
⭐ Key idea:
At first: gravity > air resistance → speeds up
Then: forces balance → terminal velocity
🚤 4. FLOATING SUBMARINE
↑ Upthrust (buoyancy)
↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑↑
┌──────────────┐
│ 🚤 Submarine │
└──────────────┘
↓ Weight (gravity)
⭐ Key idea:
Submarine floats when upthrust = weight
Sinks when weight > upthrust
Rises when upthrust > weight
🧠 SUPER MEMORY SUMMARY
🚗 Car = engine vs friction
🚲 Bike = pedalling vs resistance
🪂 Skydiver = gravity vs air resistance
