Social Movements versus Political Parties
What is a social movement?
A social movement is when a group of people with share ideas and a likeness for a particular
subject comes together and form a collation to voice their opinions,ideas and beliefs about the
subject.
What is the difference between social movements and political parties?
The difference between social movements and political parties is that with social movements
people come together with their shared beliefs on the other hand political parties is a
movement where a representative is selected by the citizens to carry out their best interests.
How does Social movements affect political Change
Social movements can affect political change in multiple ways . When a member of the
government has beliefs that align with a particular group that group’s support can be the vital in
rising in the political landscape tthey can back the representative so that when in authority they
can voice the represent their views and beliefs in government. For example Black Lives Matter
movement was flocked to and supported politicians who has shared views on black rights in
America.
Why would democratic regimes impose restrictions on a social movement ?
Democratic regimes may impose restrictions on social movements when they become unlawful
and violent .

China with a press index score of 21.7 had the lowest press freedom index score in 2018

Nigeria’s Press freedom has been on the decline during the years of 2013 to 2018 Nigerias
press freedom fell from 65.9 to 62.6 loosing 2.6 of its already low press index [Link]
seeing that Nigeria is a democratic state and leaders change overtime ,one would expect think
that the newly elected representative would look to resolve this problem and give more
autonomy but it drastically fell to a low with a index score of of 46.8 almost as close as Russia’s
38.8 with a authoritarian style of rule.
What is Democratization?
This is when a country is transitioning from a different style of government to a democracy an
example of this is Nigeria transitioning into a democratic society.
Conclusion of Mexico’s democraticizaion
From the information provided Mexico’s is not taking information circulation well . The press
freedom is on a decline over the course of 9 years . This can be influenced by the issues Mexico
faces with corruption and Kartel influence in the government and the shift in the style of
government may have been challenged.
Iran’s Press Freedom index score and its Regime type
Iran’s low press freedom index score can be influenced by their style of governance. With the
Religion based Authoritarian regime , the low press autonomy in the country can be understood
because authoritarian governments tend to control the information coming inside and outside
of the country , also the information about the government, and the freedom of opinion and
opposition.

Comparison of the division of power between Iran and Nigeria
Regime: Iran- Religious Authoritarian Nigeria- Democracy
Unitary System is the style of rule where power is centralized in a specific group.
Nigeria shares power federally where power is distributed through the judaical ,executive and
legislative bodies on the other hand Iran’s political power is held mostly by the supreme leader
who has been selected by the clerical authority while they do also have a president and
parliament has little power compared to the supreme leader
How The division of Power of the two counties addresses challenges in social cleavage in the
national and regional governments
The main challenges of the division of power of Iran is press freedom ,civil rights and citizen
demonstrations because of the authoritarian style of government. They hold control over the
citizens and have control over the press
The main challenge with Nigeria is corruption while the country is a democratic republic
corruption within the political system is causing social and economic problems in the country
