CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHDOLOGY
3.1 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is the systematic process used to conduct a research study in an
organized and meaningful manner. It explains the methods used for collecting, analyzing, and
interpreting data in order to solve the research problem and achieve the objectives of the
study. In this chapter, the methodology adopted for studying the impact of security issues on
customer trust in online marketing is described in detail.

3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN

The present study adopts a descriptive and exploratory research design. Descriptive research
is used to describe the opinions, experiences, and perceptions of customers regarding security
issues in online marketing. Exploratory research is used to understand the underlying reasons
behind customer trust or distrust in online platforms. This design is suitable because the study
focuses on both customer behavior and the influence of online security concerns.

3.3 SAMPLE DESIGN

Sample design refers to the plan used to select respondents from the total population for the
study. It explains who will be included in the study, how they will be selected, and how many
respondents will be taken so that the collected data represents the target group properly. For
this study, the respondents are online users who have experience with online shopping or
digital transactions.

3.4 DATA COLLECTION

Data collection is the process of gathering information from different sources for the purpose
of study. It includes collecting primary data directly from respondents and secondary data
from books, journals, articles, websites, and other published materials. In this research, data
has been collected to understand how security issues affect customer trust in online
marketing.

3.5 SOURCES OF DATA

The source of data refers to the origin from where information is collected for the study. It
includes both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources consist of data collected
directly from respondents through a questionnaire. Secondary sources include research
papers, journals, online reports, websites, and other relevant published materials related to
online marketing, cybersecurity, and customer trust.

3.6 METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

The study is primarily based on primary data collection. Primary data refers to first-hand
information collected directly from respondents. A structured questionnaire is used to collect
opinions and responses from online users regarding security, privacy, fraud, trust, and safe
online shopping practices. This method is suitable because the study focuses on customer
perceptions and experiences.

3.7 RESEARCH GAP
Although many studies discuss online marketing, cybersecurity, and customer behavior, most
of them focus on these topics separately. Very few studies examine the combined effect of
different security issues on customer trust in online marketing. There is also limited research
on how security concerns influence customer confidence, buying intention, and loyalty
together. Therefore, this study attempts to fill this gap by focusing on the overall impact of
security issues on customer trust in the online marketing environment.

3.8 SAMPLE TYPE

The sample for this study consists of individuals who use online platforms for shopping,
payment, or digital interaction. The respondents are selected from different backgrounds to
obtain a variety of opinions and experiences. This helps in understanding how different users
perceive security issues and trust in online marketing.

3.9 SAMPLE SIZE

The questionnaire was distributed to 100 respondents, out of which 100 responses were
received and considered for analysis. The sample size is suitable for understanding general
customer opinions regarding online security and trust.

3.10 SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The study uses a non-probability convenience sampling technique. In this method,
respondents are selected based on their availability, willingness, and accessibility. This
technique is appropriate for the present study because it helps in collecting responses easily
from online users who are available and willing to participate.

3.11 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The research instrument used in this study is a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire
includes both close-ended and simple opinion-based questions related to online security, trust,
privacy, and purchase behavior. It is designed in a simple form so that respondents can easily
understand and answer the questions.

3.12 STATISTICAL TOOL / TECHNIQUE USED

The data collected from the questionnaire is analyzed using the percentage method. This
method helps in presenting the responses in a simple and clear form. Tables and charts may
also be used to show the distribution of responses. The percentage method is useful for
comparing opinions and understanding the overall trend in customer responses.

3.13 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study has some limitations. The sample size is limited, so the findings may not represent
all online users. The study is also based mainly on questionnaire responses, which depend on
the honesty and understanding of respondents. Time constraints and limited resources also

40
affect the depth of analysis. Despite these limitations, the study provides useful insights into
the impact of security issues on customer trust in online marketing.

Research Topic Impact of Security Issues on Customer Trust in Online

Marketing
Research Gap Although many studies discuss online marketing and
cybersecurity separately, there is limited research on
how different security issues collectively affect
customer trust, buying intention, and loyalty in online
marketing.

Method of Data Collection The study is primarily based on primary qualitative

data collection.
The study is primarily based on primary data
collection through a structured questionnaire.

Source of Data Collection The data for this study has been collected from the
following sources:
Primary Sources: Questionnaire responses from
online users. Secondary Sources: Research articles,
journals, books, websites, and reports related to online
marketing and cybersecurity.

Research Design The study follows a descriptive and exploratory

research design to understand customer opinions,
trust levels, and security concerns.

The study uses a non-probability convenience

Sample Design sampling technique. Respondents were selected
based on accessibility and willingness to participate

Sample Type The sample includes people who use online shopping
platforms or digital payment systems and have
experience with online marketing.
41
Sample Size
The questionnaire was distributed to 100 respondents,
and the responses were used for analysis.

Statistical Tool / Technique Since the study is qualitative in nature, the following

Used techniques have been used:

• Thematic Analysis (to identify common
themes and patterns)
• Content Analysis (to interpret
responses systematically)
• Narrative Analysis (to understand individual
experiences and viewpoints)
• Basic Tabulation (to organize responses where
required)
These techniques help in:
• Understanding complex human
experiences
• Identifying recurring patterns and insights •
Presenting findings in a structured and meaningful
way
