Algebra for CEnT Mathematics Preparation
Algebra is one of the most important parts of the CEnT Mathematics section. According to the
official CEnT-S syllabus, algebra includes equations, inequalities, polynomials, factorization,
functions, logarithms, and systems of equations.

Recent student exam discussions also show that algebra and functions are heavily tested in
conceptual MCQs and graph-based questions.

1. Introduction to Algebra
Algebra is the branch of mathematics in which letters and symbols are used to represent numbers
and quantities.

Example:

x+5=12x + 5 = 12x+5=12

Here, xxx is a variable.

2. Basic Terms of Algebra

Term Meaning Example
Constant Fixed value 5, 7, -2
Variable Unknown quantity x, y
Coefficient Number with variable 3x
Expression Combination of numbers & variables 2x + 5
Equation Two expressions equal x+2=7
Inequality Comparison using signs x>3

3. Algebraic Expressions
An algebraic expression contains variables, constants, and operations.

Functions in Mathematics (Detailed Notes for

CENT Exam Preparation)
A function is one of the most important topics in mathematics and is highly tested in
CENT/entry tests. Questions usually come from definition, domain/range, types of functions,
composition, inverse, graphs, and properties.

1. Definition of Function
A function is a relation between two sets in which each input has exactly one output.

Mathematically:

f:A→Bf: A \to Bf:A→B

where:

• A = Domain (input set)

• B = Codomain (possible outputs)

Example:

f(x)=2x+1f(x)=2x+1f(x)=2x+1

If x=3x=3x=3,

f(3)=2(3)+1=7f(3)=2(3)+1=7f(3)=2(3)+1=7

So output is 7.
2. Important Terms
(a) Domain

All possible input values.

Example:

f(x)=1xf(x)=\frac{1}{x}f(x)=x1

Domain = all real numbers except 0

(b) Range

All actual output values.

Example:

f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2f(x)=x2

Range = y≥0y \geq 0y≥0

(c) Codomain

Set of all possible outputs.

3. Representation of Function
Functions can be represented by:

1. Formula method:

f(x)=x+2
]

2. Table method
xy
13
24

3. Graph method
4. Mapping diagram

4. Types of Functions
(1) One-One (Injective)
Different inputs → different outputs.

Example:

f(x)=2x+1f(x)=2x+1f(x)=2x+1

(2) Many-One
Different inputs give same output.

Example:

f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2f(x)=x2

because:

f(2)=4,f(−2)=4f(2)=4,\quad f(-2)=4f(2)=4,f(−2)=4

(3) Onto (Surjective)

Every element of codomain has at least one pre-image.

(4) Into Function

Not every codomain element is used.
(5) Bijective
Both one-one and onto.

(6) Constant Function

Output always same.

f(x)=5f(x)=5f(x)=5

(7) Identity Function

f(x)=xf(x)=xf(x)=x

(8) Polynomial Function

Example:

x2+3x+2x^2+3x+2x2+3x+2

(9) Rational Function

p(x)q(x)\frac{p(x)}{q(x)}q(x)p(x)

Example:

x+1x−2\frac{x+1}{x-2}x−2x+1

(10) Modulus Function

f(x)=∣x∣f(x)=|x|f(x)=∣x∣

(11) Greatest Integer Function

[x][x][x]

Example:

[3.8]=3[3.8]=3[3.8]=3

(12) Signum Function

sgn(x)={1,x>00,x=0−1,x<0sgn(x)= \begin{cases} 1,& x>0\\ 0,& x=0\\ -1,& x<0
\end{cases}sgn(x)=⎩⎨⎧1,0,−1,x>0x=0x<0

5. Even and Odd Functions

Even:

f(−x)=f(x)f(-x)=f(x)f(−x)=f(x)

Example: x2x^2x2

Odd:

f(−x)=−f(x)f(-x)=-f(x)f(−x)=−f(x)

Example: x3x^3x3

6. Composite Function
(f∘g)(x)=f(g(x))(f\circ g)(x)=f(g(x))(f∘g)(x)=f(g(x))

Example:
If

f(x)=x+1,g(x)=2xf(x)=x+1,\quad g(x)=2xf(x)=x+1,g(x)=2x

Then:

f(g(x))=2x+1f(g(x))=2x+1f(g(x))=2x+1
7. Inverse Function
If

f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3

Then:

y=2x+3y=2x+3y=2x+3

Swap x and y:

x=2y+3x=2y+3x=2y+3 y=x−32y=\frac{x-3}{2}y=2x−3

So:

f−1(x)=x−32f^{-1}(x)=\frac{x-3}{2}f−1(x)=2x−3

8. Graphs of Functions
Important:

• Linear → straight line

• Quadratic → parabola
• Cubic → S-shape
• Modulus → V-shape
• Reciprocal → hyperbola

9. Important Formulae
(f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)(f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)(f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x) (f−g)(x)=f(x)−g(x)(f-g)(x)=f(x)-
g(x)(f−g)(x)=f(x)−g(x) (fg)(x)=f(x)g(x)(fg)(x)=f(x)g(x)(fg)(x)=f(x)g(x)
(fg)(x)=f(x)g(x)\left(\frac{f}{g}\right)(x)=\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}(gf)(x)=g(x)f(x)

Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

(Complete Notes for CENT Preparation)
Exponential and logarithmic functions are among the most important topics in competitive
mathematics exams like CEnT/CENTS. Questions usually test:

• Laws of exponents
• Laws of logarithms
• Simplification
• Solving equations
• Graphs and properties
• Applications in growth and decay

According to the CEnT-S syllabus, students must understand “definition of logarithm and
elementary algebraic properties of exponential and logarithm functions” and solve “elementary
exponential and logarithmic equations.”

1. Exponents (Indices)
An exponent tells how many times a number is multiplied by itself.
Example:

23=2×2×2=82^3 = 2 \times 2 \times 2 = 823=2×2×2=8

Here:

• 2 = base
• 3 = exponent/power

2. Laws of Exponents
(i) Product Rule
am×an=am+na^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}am×an=am+n

Example:

23×24=27=1282^3 \times 2^4 = 2^7 = 12823×24=27=128

(ii) Quotient Rule

aman=am−n\frac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n}anam=am−n

Example:

5752=55\frac{5^7}{5^2} = 5^55257=55

(iii) Power Rule

(am)n=amn(a^m)^n = a^{mn}(am)n=amn

Example:

(23)2=26(2^3)^2 = 2^6(23)2=26

(iv) Zero Exponent Rule

a0=1a^0 = 1a0=1
Example:

70=17^0 = 170=1

(v) Negative Exponent Rule

a−n=1ana^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n}a−n=an1

Example:

2−3=182^{-3} = \frac{1}{8}2−3=81

(vi) Fractional Exponents

a1/n=ana^{1/n} = \sqrt[n]{a}a1/n=na

Example:

161/2=416^{1/2} = 4161/2=4

3. Exponential Functions
A function where the variable is in the exponent.

f(x)=axf(x)=a^xf(x)=ax

Where:

• a>0a>0a>0
• a≠1a \neq 1a =1

Types
(a) Exponential Growth

If a>1a>1a>1

Example:
y=2xy=2^xy=2x

Graph increases rapidly.

(b) Exponential Decay

If 0<a<10<a<10<a<1

Example:

y=(12)xy=\left(\frac12\right)^xy=(21)x

Graph decreases.

4. Important Properties
• Domain: all real numbers
• Range: positive numbers only
• Graph never touches x-axis
• y-intercept = 1

5. Solving Exponential Equations

Method 1: Same Base
2x=252^x = 2^52x=25

Then:

x=5x=5x=5

Method 2: Convert Bases

8x=268^x=2^68x=26

Since:
8=238=2^38=23

So:

(23)x=26(2^3)^x=2^6(23)x=26 23x=262^{3x}=2^623x=26 3x=63x=63x=6 x=2x=2x=2

6. Introduction to Logarithms
If:

ax=ba^x=bax=b

then:

log⁡ab=x\log_a b=xlogab=x

This is the definition of logarithm.

Example:

23=82^3=823=8

Therefore:

log⁡28=3\log_2 8=3log28=3

7. Types of Logarithms
(i) Common Logarithm
Base 10

log⁡100=2\log 100=2log100=2

(ii) Natural Logarithm

Base eee

ln⁡e=1\ln e =1lne=1
Where:

e≈2.718e \approx 2.718e≈2.718

8. Laws of Logarithms

9. Change of Base Formula

log⁡ab=log⁡cblog⁡ca\log_a b=\frac{\log_c b}{\log_c a}logab=logcalogcb

Usually:

log⁡ab=log⁡blog⁡a\log_a b=\frac{\log b}{\log a}logab=logalogb

10. Solving Logarithmic Equations

Example:
log⁡2x=5\log_2 x=5log2x=5

Convert to exponential form:

x=25x=2^5x=25 x=32x=32x=32

Example:

log⁡x+log⁡2=3\log x+\log 2=3logx+log2=3

Using product law:

log⁡(2x)=3\log(2x)=3log(2x)=3 2x=1032x=10^32x=103 2x=10002x=10002x=1000

x=500x=500x=500

Combinatorics and Probability — Complete
Notes for CENT Preparation
Combinatorics is the branch of mathematics used for counting arrangements, selections, and
distributions. Probability is the branch that measures the chance of events occurring. These
topics are highly important in aptitude and CENT-style exams because they test logical thinking,
speed, and analytical ability.

According to recent CENT preparation discussions, probability and combinatorics questions are
usually concept-based and time-pressured, not only direct formula questions.

PART 1 — COMBINATORICS
1. Fundamental Principle of Counting
If one operation can be done in m ways and another in n ways, then total ways:

m×nm \times nm×n

Example:

• 3 shirts
• 2 pants

Total outfits:

3×2=63 \times 2 = 63×2=6

2. Factorial
Factorial means multiplication of natural numbers.

n!=n(n−1)(n−2)…1n! = n(n-1)(n-2)\dots 1n!=n(n−1)(n−2)…1

Examples:

5!=5×4×3×2×1=1205! = 5 \times 4 \times 3 \times 2 \times 1 = 1205!=5×4×3×2×1=120 0!=10! =

10!=1
n!=n(n−1)(n−2)⋯1n!=n(n-1)(n-2)\cdots 1n!=n(n−1)(n−2)⋯1

3. Permutations
Permutation means arrangement.

Order matters.

Formula:

nPr=n!(n−r)!^nP_r = \frac{n!}{(n-r)!}nPr=(n−r)!n!

nPr=n!(n−r)!{}^nP_r=\frac{n!}{(n-r)!}nPr=(n−r)!n!

Example:

Arrange 3 letters from A,B,C,D

4P3=4!1!=24^4P_3 = \frac{4!}{1!}=244P3=1!4!=24

4. Circular Permutation
For arranging objects in a circle:

(n−1)!(n-1)!(n−1)!

Example:

5 people around a table:

(5−1)!=24(5-1)! = 24(5−1)!=24

5. Permutations with Repetition

If some objects are alike:

n!p!q!r!\frac{n!}{p!q!r!}p!q!r!n!

Example:
Word = BALLOON

Letters repeated:

• L=2
• O=2

Total letters = 7

7!2!2!\frac{7!}{2!2!}2!2!7!

6. Combinations
Combination means selection.

Order does NOT matter.

Formula:

nCr=n!r!(n−r)!^nC_r = \frac{n!}{r!(n-r)!}nCr=r!(n−r)!n!

nCr=n!r!(n−r)!{}^nC_r=\frac{n!}{r!(n-r)!}nCr=r!(n−r)!n!

Example:

Choose 3 students from 5

5C3=10^5C_3 = 105C3=10

7. Relation Between Permutation and

Combination
nPr=nCr×r!^nP_r = ^nC_r \times r!nPr=nCr×r!

nPr=nCr×r!{}^nP_r={}^nC_r\times r!nPr=nCr×r!

8. Binomial Theorem
(a+b)n(a+b)^n(a+b)n

Expansion uses combinations.

General term:

Tr+1=nCran−rbrT_{r+1} = ^nC_r a^{n-r}b^rTr+1=nCran−rbr

Tr+1=nCran−rbrT_{r+1}={}^nC_r a^{n-r}b^rTr+1=nCran−rbr

9. Pigeonhole Principle
If more objects than boxes are distributed:

At least one box contains more than one object.

Example:

13 students and 12 months

At least two students have birthdays in same month.

10. Inclusion-Exclusion Principle

n(A∪B)=n(A)+n(B)−n(A∩B)n(A \cup B)=n(A)+n(B)-n(A\cap B)n(A∪B)=n(A)+n(B)−n(A∩B)
n(A∪B)=n(A)+n(B)−n(A∩B)n(A\cup B)=n(A)+n(B)-n(A\cap B)n(A∪B)=n(A)+n(B)−n(A∩B)
P(A)P(A)P(A)

2. Types of Events
Simple Event

Only one outcome.

Compound Event

More than one outcome.

Impossible Event

P(E)=0P(E)=0P(E)=0

Sure Event

P(E)=1P(E)=1P(E)=1

3. Complement Rule
P(A′)=1−P(A)P(A') = 1 - P(A)P(A′)=1−P(A)

P(A′)=1−P(A)P(A')=1-P(A)P(A′)=1−P(A)

4. Addition Rule
P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A \cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B)P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)
P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B)P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)
P(A)P(A)P(A)
0.

P(B)P(B)P(B)
0.

P(A∩B)P(A\cap B)P(A∩B)
0.

P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)≈0.80P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B)\approx

0.80P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)≈0.80
AB0.20

5. Multiplication Rule
Independent events:

P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)P(A\cap B)=P(A)P(B)P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)
P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)P(A\cap B)=P(A)P(B)P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)
P(A)P(A)P(A)
0.

P(B)P(B)P(B)
0.

P(A∩B)=P(A)⋅P(B)≈0.27P(A\cap B)=P(A)\cdot P(B)\approx 0.27P(A∩B)=P(A)⋅P(B)≈0.27

P(A) = 0.60P(B) = 0.450.27

6. Conditional Probability
P(A∣B)=P(A∩B)P(B)P(A|B)=\frac{P(A\cap B)}{P(B)}P(A∣B)=P(B)P(A∩B)
P(A∣B)=P(A∩B)P(B)P(A|B)=\frac{P(A\cap B)}{P(B)}P(A∣B)=P(B)P(A∩B)
P(B)P(B)P(B)

P(A∩B)P(A\cap B)P(A∩B)
0.

P(A∣B)=P(A∩B)P(B)≈0.46P(A\mid B)=\frac{P(A\cap B)}{P(B)}\approx

0.46P(A∣B)=P(B)P(A∩B)≈0.46
P(B)=0.65P(A∩B)=0.30P(A|B) ≈ 0.46A∩B is the part of B where A also happens

7. Independent Events
Two events are independent if:
P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)P(A\cap B)=P(A)P(B)P(A∩B)=P(A)P(B)

8. Bayes’ Theorem
P(A∣B)=P(B∣A)P(A)P(B)P(A|B)=\frac{P(B|A)P(A)}{P(B)}P(A∣B)=P(B)P(B∣A)P(A)
P(A∣B)=P(B∣A)P(A)P(B)P(A|B)=\frac{P(B|A)P(A)}{P(B)}P(A∣B)=P(B)P(B∣A)P(A)
P(A)P(A)P(A)
0.

P(B∣A)P(B\mid A)P(B∣A)
0.

P(B∣¬A)P(B\mid \neg A)P(B∣¬A)

Geometry – Complete Detailed Notes for

CENT Exam Preparation
Geometry is a branch of mathematics that studies shapes, sizes, lines, angles, surfaces, and
positions of objects. It is one of the most important topics in competitive exams like CENT
because many questions are formula-based and concept-based.

1. Basic Terms in Geometry

Point
A point shows an exact position.
It has no length, width, or height.

Example: A, B, C
Line
A line is a straight path extending infinitely in both directions.

Properties:

• No endpoints
• Infinite length

Line Segment
Part of a line having two endpoints.

Example:
AB

Ray
A ray has one endpoint and extends infinitely in one direction.

2. Angles
An angle is formed when two rays meet at a point.

Types of Angles
Angle Type Measure
Acute Angle Less than 90°
Right Angle 90°
Obtuse Angle Between 90° and 180°
Straight Angle 180°
Reflex Angle More than 180°

Important Angle Properties
• Complementary Angles → Sum = 90°
• Supplementary Angles → Sum = 180°
• Angles on a straight line = 180°
• Angles around a point = 360°
• Vertically opposite angles are equal

3. Parallel Lines and Transversal

When a transversal cuts two parallel lines:

• Corresponding angles are equal

• Alternate interior angles are equal
• Co-interior angles sum to 180°

4. Triangles
A triangle is a polygon with 3 sides.

Types of Triangles
According to Sides
