Inception Report Structural Design Part
1.1 General
There is an existing accessed road on Fik-Segeg (Km 0+000 to Km 90+000)
road segment and it is not fitted with any kind of proper drainage structures;
hence all the structures to be provided are new. As a result, no condition survey
of existing structures was carried out.
The objective of the consultant at this inception stage of the supervision
services is therefore to collect initial findings to be used in the design review of
drainage structures of the project. The detail engineering design and other
relevant sections of the works contract document have been reviewed and
visual inspection of the site are carried out by the senior Structural Engineer
and team of supervision key staff, before the below stated initial findings are
identified.
1.2 Review of the detail engineering design at inception stage
This section of the report addresses the review of the structural design and
detailing, which includes new culverts, new bridges, inlet and outlet structures,
drainage works and erosion protection works. The objective of the drainage and
structural review is to assess the original design and ensure the suitability of the
design provisions with respect to current design standards and actual site
conditions.
The major structural works of the project, as provided in the Works Contract
(design contract document) and observations of the actual site condition are
briefly stated below:
- New Single Span Box Girder Bridge (1 No.)
- New Multiple Span Deck Girder Bridges (5No.)
- New Single Span Deck Girder Bridges (3No.)
- Pipe Culverts to be newly provided (65No.)
- Slab Culverts to be newly provided (36No.)
- Side drainage works
- Retaining walls
- Erosion protection works for bridges, culvert inlets and outlets, and turnouts
As it was stated in the engineering report, the original design was made based
on ERA Bride Design Manual and AASHTO LRFD Bridge design specification third
edition 2007 and but no indicated which version of ERA manual used. Its need to
noted that detail document review will be executed during the design review
period.
1.3 Site observation
As it was explained above, the existing structures at Fik-Segeg (Km 0+000 to Km
90+000) existing accessed road are not fitted with any kind of proper drainage
structures; therefore, no assessment of the existing condition was made by the
Engineer, however team of key staffs had visited 9 major river and many defined
minor streams to visually observe their river type, bank condition, geometry of
approach road and etc. the following site observation has shown the condition of
the major rivers of the projects.
Major River No.1 at station 9+700
The design consultant has proposed new double cell 20m span reinforced
concrete deck girder bridge. Masonry abutment and one reinforced concrete pier
was proposed as per the design documents. According to site observation the
river has seasonal and the channel of the river was wide. the river has well
defined bank and channel. There is a secondary channel joining the main river
just upstream of the existing channel crossing. The bank of the river has sign of
erosion, which needs to be provided proper river bank protection works. The
approach road geometry has located on flat terrain.

Major River No.2 at station 19+604
New Double cell 24m span reinforced deck girder bridge was proposed at this
crossing as per the design document. The substructure type has proposed by the
design consultant has masonry abutment and one reinforced concrete pier. This
is the seasonal river and it has well defined river banks. The river channel has
depositions, which needs clearing for protection of one side flowing of the river
channel. It has no major tributaries around the crossing. The approach road
geometry has located on mountainous terrain. It requires proper river bank
protection works.

Major River No.3 at station 21+940
The design consultant has proposed new single cell 14m span reinforced
concrete deck girder bridge with masonry abutment for this crossing. It is
seasonal river and has well defined river banks. The approach road has
mountainous.

Major River No.4 at station 32+787
The designer was proposed new 20m span double cell reinforced concrete deck
girder bridge. The proposed substructure has masonry abutment and one
reinforced concrete pier according to the design documents. The river type has
seasonal, wide and defined river bank but not stable, which needs proper
masonry retaining wall river bank protection. It has shown mountainous road
approach. The river flow has shifted to one direction due to deposition, which
needs to clearing the deposit that indicate to used full capacity of the river
channel.

Major River No.5 at station 37+268
There is New Triple cell reinforced concrete deck girder bridge with span
configuration of 15+20+15 has proposed by the design consultant at this river
crossing. The substructure types proposed by the designer has one masonry
abutment and two reinforced concrete piers. It is seasonal river and has well
defined river banks but not stable. The river bank has formed deep gully’s, which
needs popper bank protection works such as masonry retaining wall. The river
bed has deposited by boulder.

Major River No.6 at station 41+896
There is new single cell of 16m span reinforced concrete deck girder bridge with
sub structure of masonry abutment to be provided at this location as per the
deign document. It is seasonal river and has flat river bed. river bed has highly
eroded at the downstream just from the existing crossing channel, which needs
to provide proper erosion protection work such as concrete cut of walls.

Major River No.7 at station 73+660
There is new triple cell of 24m span reinforced concrete deck girder bridge has
proposed by the design consultant. Masonry abutment and two reinforced
concrete piers to be provided at this location as per the design documents. It is
seasonal river, but to be ponded some waters relative to other rivers. It has wide
beds and defined river banks but not to be sable banks which needs to be
provide proper bank protection works such as masonry retaining wall. The river
beds have deposited by transported logs.

Major River No.8 at station 80+912
There new single of 30m span reinforced concrete box girder bridge with
masonry abutment has proposed by the design consultant at this crossing
location. It is seasonal river and wide river channel. The river bank has sign
erosion, which needs river bank protection work such as gabion walls. Deposition
of sand observed on the river bed during site visit.

Major River No.9 at station 84+465
There new single of 20m span reinforced concrete deck girder bridge with
masonry abutment has proposed by the design consultant. It is seasonal river
and wide river channel.
The river bed has deposited by sand with boulders. It has minor
tributaries around the crossing.
Wide river channel deposit sand with boulders Minor trib
1.4 Recommendation
As per site observation discussed above the following initial finding and
recommendation are made.
Some of the river banks has highly erodible, which needs proper
protection works depends on the condition of the banks as stated above.
During site visit, some of the rivers are deposited boulders, sediments and
logs that indicates the configuration of multiple spans has to be
considered the river condition during detail design review period.
