CENG 113n: ENGINEERING DRAWINGS AND PLANS

Laboratory Exercise No. 07

GEOMETRIC FIGURE CONSTRUCTION

Introduction
All figures to be drawn comes from the most shapes of geometry. If placed in an orderly manner,
multitudes of foundation shapes, such as points and lines, will create the necessary figures,
such as polygons and involutes, and can even create the most complex of drawings, such as
those of three-dimensional solids. These figures can be drawn by following procedures called
geometric construction that are based on their description or definition.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this activity, the student should be able to perform the construction of the different
geometric figures.

Materials Required Expected Duration of Activity

1. 5 pcs of Long Size Bond 6. Compass with Pen 60-90 Minutes Practice
Paper Adapter 180 Minutes Actual Work
2. Sharp Graphite Pencil 7. White Cartolina as
3. 0.10 mm, 0.30 mm, 0.50 mm, Backing Sheet
and 0.80 mm Drawing Pen 8. Masking Tape
4. T-Square 9. Drawing Platform
5. 45° X 45° & 30° X 60°
Triangles

Terms of Reference/Instructions
1. Secure a backing sheet on a drafting platform. After securing the backing sheet, secure 2
Long Size Bond Paper in portrait orientation. Make sure to tape all four corners. Sheets
will be changed once the task for the sheet is done.
2. Perform the Title Block Works found on the Laboratory Exercise Primer. Note that all text
within the Title Block should be done in freehand while following the Lettering Technique.
3. On a separate piece of paper, perform trial runs of the tasks mentioned below. Reperform
the task trial runs to improve work quality. When confident enough, perform the task on the
secured paper.
4. Task: Geometric Figure Construction.
a. Draw the figures described in Item 5. Follow the Layouting Guidelines found in Item 6.
b. After drawing each figure, write their Titles below with a text height of 5 mm using a 0.80
mm Drawing Pen. Note: The title of each figure is located before the description. Use a
text height of 3 mm using a 0.50 mm Drawing Pen when naming the points of the Figures.
This shall be done in freehand while following the Lettering Technique.
c. Finalize the figures using 0.10 mm Drawing Pen for construction lines, 0.30 mm Drawing
Pen for given figures, and 0.50 for the required Geometric Figure.

5. Geometric Figures to be Drawn.

a. Task 01
i. Rectangle. Construct a 40 mm x 30 mm rectangle with its longer side at 30°
counterclockwise from a horizontal line. Perpendicular bisectors must be performed
to produce the figure.
ii. Pentagon with a given edge. Given a line of 30 mm in length at 45°
counterclockwise from a horizontal line, construct a pentagon. After this, determine
its center and draw a circle with a radius of 15 mm.
iii. Pentagon inscribed in a given circle. Construct a pentagon inscribed in given a
circle with a radius of 30 mm. It must be constructed such that one of its edges is at
the top of the figure and is a horizontal line.
b. Task 02
i. Hexagon circumscribing a given circle. Construct a hexagon circumscribing a
circle with a diameter of 40 mm. it must be constructed such that two of its edges are
45° counterclockwise from a horizontal line.
ii. Octagon in a square. Construct an octagon from a square with 50 mm sides and is
at 30° counterclockwise from a horizontal line.
c. Task 03
i. Two Circles tangent to a Line. Using a 50 mm line at 15° counterclockwise from a
horizontal line, draw 2 circles with a diameter of 30 mm with the same tangent point
to the line located at the center of the line.
ii. Two Lines tangent to a Circle. Draw two lines that are tangent to a circle with a
diameter of 50 mm. Both tangent lines must have a length of 40 mm. One of the
tangent lines must be at an angle of 75° counterclockwise from a horizontal line
located at the left half of the circle while the other must be 30° counterclockwise from
a horizontal line at the lower half of the circle. The tangent points for both lines must
be located at the centers of each line.
d. Task 04
i. Circular Arc tangent to an Acute Angle. Given two lines with equal lengths of 50
mm at an angle of 60° from each other where one is a horizontal line. Draw an arc
with a radius of 15 mm tangent to the legs of the angle. Identify the tangent points of
the arc as A and B.
ii. Circular Arc tangent to an Obtuse Angle. Given two lines with equal lengths of 50
mm at an angle of 120° from each other where one is a horizontal line. Draw an arc
with a radius of 30 mm tangent to the legs of the angle. Identify the tangent points of
the arc as A and B.
e. Task 05
i. Lines tangent internally to Two Circles. Given two circles A and B. Circle A shall
be 25 mm in radius while Circle B shall be 15 mm in radius. The distance between
their centers shall be 60 mm measured horizontally with the larger circle on the right
side. Construct two lines that are internally tangent to the two circles. Name the
tangent points at Circle A as points D and E while the tangent points at Circle B as
points F and G.

ii. Lines tangent externally to Two Circles. Given two circles A and B. Circle A shall
be 25 mm in radius while Circle B shall be 15 mm in radius. The distance between
their centers shall be 60 mm measured horizontally with the larger circle on the left
side. Construct two lines that are externally tangent to the two circles. Name the
tangent points at Circle A as points D and E while the tangent points at Circle B as
points F and G.
f. Task 06
i. Circular Arc tangent internally to Two Circles. Given two circles A and B. Circle
A shall be 25 mm in radius while Circle B shall be 15 mm in radius. The distance
between their centers shall be 60 mm measured horizontally with the larger circle on
the right side. Construct an arc with a radius of 80 mm internally tangent to the two
circles. Name the tangent points at Circle A as points D and E while the tangent
points at Circle B as points F and G.
ii. Circular Arc tangent externally to Two Circles. Draw two circles A and B. Circle
A shall be 25 mm in radius while Circle B shall be 15 mm in radius. The distance
between their centers shall be 60 mm measured horizontally with the larger circle on
the left side. Construct two arcs with a radius of 80 mm externally tangent to the two
circles. Name the tangent points at Circle A as points D and E while the tangent
points at Circle B as points F and G.

completed.
ii. Involutes of a triangle. Construct an involute of a square whose legs measure 10
mm. Perform until two clockwise cycles or rotations have been completed.
6. Layout Guidelines. The following guidelines shall be used to assess the placement or
layout of the figures.
a. No elements of the figures are to intersect. Elements include the final Geometric Figure
required, Drawing Title, and Construction lines.
b. Figure Labels must be centered below the Figure. Centering shall be measured from the
outermost elements of the figure.
c. All figures must fit within the 5 pages. Any additional pages will have a deduction of 5
points per page.
7. Submit your best possible work to the instructor. Follow the submission procedures
stipulated in the Laboratory Exercise Primer.

Evaluation Criteria
The Exercise will be evaluated using the following criteria:
1. Task Quality (86 points to be divided to all Figures)
