Tutorial 3

This document is a tutorial for a Quantum Mechanics course at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, detailing various problems related to angular momentum, Hamiltonians, and perturbation theory. It includes calculations for commutation relations, eigenspectra, energy corrections, and solutions for systems in magnetic fields. The problems involve both theoretical concepts and practical applications in quantum mechanics.

PH5170 Tutorial 3 Quantum Mechanics 2

[11 March 2026]
1. If L is the angular momentum of a system, R the position vector and P
the linear momentum. Compute:

(a) [L, R].

(b) [L, P ].
(c) [L, P 2 ].
(d) [L, R · P ].

2. A particle of mass m, constrained to move in the xy-plane, has a Hamilto-

nian
P2 Py2 1
H0 = x + + mω 2 (x2 + y 2 )
2m 2m 2
and let the perturbation be:

H 0 = λmω 2 xy

(a) Determine the eigenspectrum of H0 and the associated degeneracy.

(b) Calculate the first and second order correction to the ground state
energy if λ 1 (both energy and eigenstates).

3. Consider a 1D harmonic oscillator. What is the first and second order

correction to the ground state energy if the perturbation is H 0 = λx4 ,
where λ is a continous parameter taking values between 0 and 1.

4. Consider a particle of charge q and mass m placed in an external magnetic

field B = B0 êz (in three dimensions). The Hamiltonian is
p − qA
H=
2m
(a) Show that A = − 21 r × B yields the field B = B0 êz .
(b) Obtain the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for this Hamiltonian and in-
terpret the solution.

5. Consider a hydrogen-like atom in a magnetic field B = B0 êz given by the

following Hamiltonian:

p2 eB0
H= + Vc (r) − (Lz + 2Sz ),
2m 2mc
where m is the mass of the valence electron and Vc (r) is the usual central
term with Z protons. For weak fields, working up to second order in per-
turbation theory, determine the ground and the first excited state energy
and wavefunction.
