Grouting Methodology

This document outlines the methodology for grouting sonic pipes following Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) testing for a bridge construction project in Maharashtra. It details the materials, equipment, execution procedures, quality control measures, staff responsibilities, and safety protocols involved in the grouting process. The aim is to ensure structural integrity and prevent corrosion within the concrete body of the piles.

METHOD STATEMENT
Grouting of Sonic Pipes for Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL)

May
Document Ref: MS-KCB-001 Date: 202

KELSHI CREEK
Project: BRIDGE Revision: 01

1. Introduction & Purpose

This method statement outlines the procedures for grouting access tubes (sonic pipes) following the
completion of Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) testing. The purpose of grouting is to ensure the structural
integrity of the pile, prevent the creation of voids within the concrete body, and protect the reinforcement
from potential corrosion caused by water ingress.

2. Materials & Equipment

2.1 Materials
•Cement: Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) or as specified in project documents.

•Water: Clean, potable water free from oils, acids, or organic matter.

•Admixtures (Optional): Non-shrink or expanding agents may be added to counteract

settlement, subject to engineer approval.

•Grout Mix Design: Typically a neat cement grout with a Water/Cement (W/C) ratio
between 0.40 and 0.45. Target strength is usually ≥ 30 MPa at 28 days.

2.2 Equipment

•Grout mixer (high-shear colloidal mixer preferred).

•Grout pump (positive displacement/peristaltic type).

•Flexible tremie hose (HDPE or rubber, approx. 12mm–20mm diameter).

•Measuring containers for water and [Link] equipment (water hoses and air compressors)

3. Execution Procedure

3.1 Pre-Grouting Preparation

1. Verify that CSL testing for the specific pile has been completed and formally accepted.

2. Remove the protective caps from the sonic pipes.

3. Measure the depth of the pipes to ensure no blockages have occurred.

4. Flush the pipes with clean water to remove any sediment or contaminated water used during
CSL testing or flushing by air compressor.

3.2 Grouting Operation (Tremie Method)

1. Insertion: Insert the flexible tremie hose into the sonic pipe until it reaches the very
bottom.

2. Mixing: Prepare the grout mix by Grout mixer or RMC to the approved proportions. Mix until a
uniform, lump-free consistency is achieved.

3. Pumping: Start the grout [Link] pumping check temperature and flow. As grout begins to
flow from the bottom, the water inside the pipe will be displaced [Link] a point

pressure of approximately 0.3 MPa to 0.5 MPa (or as per site-specific requirements) to ensure the
grout effectively displaces all residual water

4. Withdrawal: Gradually withdraw the tremie hose as the pipe fills. The tip of the hose
must remain submerged in the grout (at least 1.0m) at all times to prevent air entrapment.

5. Overflow: Continue pumping until "clean" grout, free from water or diluted material,
overflows from the top of the pipe.

Important: If multiple pipes exist in one pile, they should be grouted sequentially. Ensure
the pile head is kept clean of excess grout spills.

4. Quality Control & Testing

Test Description Frequency Acceptance Criteria
Consistency (Flow Cone) Once per batch Fluid and pumpable
Compressive Strength 1 set per 20 piles As per design (> 30MPa)
Cube Mould Details 70.6mm or 100mm cubes 3 cubes for 7-day & 3 for 28-
day
Visual Inspection Continuous No water pockets; full top-up

[Link] Roles & Responsibilities

 Site Engineer: Overall implementation, ensuring grout mix approval and CSL result acceptance.

 Grouting Supervisor: Oversees mixing/pumping, monitors point pressure, and ensures tremie
submergence.

 Lab Technician: Sampling grout, preparing cube moulds, performing flow tests, and managing
curing/testing.

 Pump Operator: Operates primary and standby pumps, ensuring equipment is cleaned to prevent blockag

[Link] & Environment

•PPE: Safety helmets, high-visibility vests, safety boots, and chemical-resistant gloves/
goggles are mandatory when handling cement.

•Spillage: Use plastic sheets or trays to catch grout overflow at the pile head.

•Disposal: Washout from the grout pump and mixer must be contained and disposed of in
designated concrete washout pits
