Class 10 Science – Light Chapter Notes
These notes cover the important concepts from the chapter Light – Reflection and Refraction for Class 10 students.
1. Nature of Light
● Light is a form of energy that enables us to see objects.
● Light travels in a straight line.
● The speed of light in vacuum is approximately 3 × 10■ m/s.
2. Reflection of Light
● Reflection is the bouncing back of light from a surface.
● Laws of reflection:
● • Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
● • Incident ray, reflected ray, and normal lie in the same plane.
3. Types of Mirrors
● Plane Mirror: Forms virtual, erect, same-sized image.
● Concave Mirror: Converging mirror used in torches and headlights.
● Convex Mirror: Diverging mirror used as rear-view mirrors.
4. Important Terms
● Pole (P): Center of the mirror.
● Principal Axis: Straight line through pole and center of curvature.
● Focus (F): Point where reflected rays meet or appear to meet.
● Radius of Curvature (R): Distance between pole and center of curvature.
5. Mirror Formula
● Mirror Formula: 1/f = 1/v + 1/u
● Magnification (m) = h■/h■ = -v/u
● Use sign convention carefully while solving numericals.
6. Refraction of Light
● Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one medium to another.
● Light bends due to change in speed.
● When light enters a denser medium, it bends towards the normal.
● When light enters a rarer medium, it bends away from the normal.
7. Laws of Refraction
● Incident ray, refracted ray, and normal lie in the same plane.
● Snell’s Law: sin i / sin r = constant
● Refractive Index (n) = Speed of light in vacuum / Speed in medium
8. Lenses
● Convex Lens: Converging lens used in magnifying glasses.
● Concave Lens: Diverging lens used in spectacles for myopia.
● Lens Formula: 1/f = 1/v - 1/u
● Power of lens P = 1/f (in meters)
9. Defects of Vision
● Myopia: Near objects visible clearly; corrected using concave lens.
● Hypermetropia: Distant objects visible clearly; corrected using convex lens.
● Presbyopia: Age-related defect corrected using bifocal lenses.
10. Important Tips
● Practice ray diagrams regularly.
● Remember sign conventions.
● Learn formulas and units carefully.
● Practice numericals based on mirrors and lenses.
Best of luck for your exams! Revise formulas and diagrams daily for better understanding.
