Chapter Introduction
With the rapid digital transformation and the massive growth of information
available online, searching for information in the digital environment has become
an essential skill for managers and researchers in administrative sciences. The
challenge is no longer access to information, but rather selecting accurate
information, evaluating its quality, and using it in a scientific and systematic way to
support research and managerial decisions.
In today’s digital environment, the problem is not information scarcity, but
information overload. This creates two major challenges: distraction, where a large
number of results does not necessarily mean high quality, and reliability, as much
digital content is not peer-reviewed and may be biased, inaccurate, or commercial.
Therefore, the key skill is to move from being a “browser” to becoming a
“researcher” who can identify information needs, search systematically, evaluate
sources, and apply information effectively.

Concept of Searching for Information in the Digital
Environment
Searching for digital information is a systematic and
organized process that begins with identifying an
information need and ends with using the information
to make a decision or build scientific research. It aims
to obtain accurate and reliable information through
digital tools and electronic databases.

Steps of Searching for Information in the Digital Environment
Searching for information is not a single step but a series of interconnected
stages:
1. Identifying the information need: What exactly am I searching for?
A definition, theory, statistics, or recent studies?
1. Selecting the search tool: A general search engine, academic search
engine, database, or official organization website.
2. Developing a search strategy: Keywords, synonyms, time limits, and
source type.
3. Evaluation and selection: Not all search results are suitable.
4. Documentation and use: Transforming information into knowledge that
can be included in a research paper or report.

Importance of Digital Search Skills
Digital search skills are professional skills in business administration
because they are used daily in:
1. Market and competitor analysis
2. Understanding customer and industry trends
3. Supporting strategic planning
4. Preparing professional reports
5. Academically, these skills are essential for producing valid research
outcomes, building strong literature reviews, ensuring proper
citation, and avoiding plagiarism.

Concept of Electronic Search Engines
A search engine is not a library but an intermediary that
displays results based on algorithms. Therefore, the
most scientifically reliable results do not always appear
first. Result ranking may be influenced by popularity,
links, or advertisements. The researcher’s skill lies in
reaching the scientific source, not merely the most
visible result.

Role of Search Engines in Scientific Research
Search engines are useful at the initial stage of research by
helping to map the field, but they are not sufficient on their
own. Scientific research requires peer-reviewed sources and
databases. Thus, search engines are mainly used to:
1. Identify key terms
2. Access primary sources such as articles and official reports
3. Track organizations and institutions
After that, researchers should move to academic databases
and peer-reviewed journals.

Electronic Information Sources
Electronic information sources are not equal and can be classified into:
1. Academic scientific sources: textbooks, peer-reviewed articles, theses.
2. Professional institutional sources: company reports, regulatory
authorities, international organizations.
3. Media and general sources: news, opinion articles, public websites.
Each type serves a purpose. News helps provide context, institutional reports
support managerial analysis, but academic sources are essential for
university research

Advantages of Electronic Information Sources
The advantages are not limited to speed, but also include:
1. Access to global and specialized sources
2. Faster updates compared to printed books in some fields
3. Ease of searching within texts
4. However, these advantages do not eliminate the need for
careful evaluation, as speed may lead to weak sources if
not managed properly.

Disadvantages of Electronic Information Sources
Key disadvantages in administrative research include:
1. Content bias: Some websites promote specific interests or
products.
2. Lack of scientific review: Anyone can publish inaccurate
information.
3. Obsolescence: Old articles may appear as if they are current.
4. Confusion between opinion and fact, which is risky in decision-
making.
5. Therefore, managers and researchers must develop critical
judgment before relying on any information.

Criteria for Evaluating Digital Information Quality
These criteria transform the manager from an information consumer into
a scientific critic:
1. Author or institution: Is the author specialized? Is the institution
official or academic?
2. Purpose: Is the content scientific or promotional?
3. Date: Is the information recent and relevant?
4. Evidence: Are references, data, and methodology provided?
5. Consistency: Does it align with other reliable sources?
In administrative research, methodology is particularly important: data
collection methods, sample size, and limitations.

Search Skills in Search Engines
Effective searching starts with precise keywords. For example, instead of
using only “digital marketing,” one may use:
1. Digital marketing effectiveness
2. Digital marketing ROI
3. Customer engagement metrics
Other techniques include:
1. Quotation marks for exact phrases
2. AND / OR to narrow or expand results
3. Excluding unwanted terms to reduce noise
These tools give managers and researchers control over search results rather
than relying on chance.

Advanced Search in Google
Advanced search provides scientific filtering of results, such
as:
1. Limiting the time period (e.g., last five years)
2. Searching for specific file types such as PDF
3. Searching within a specific official website
In business administration, these filters reduce information
waste and increase accuracy

Scientific Research Using Google Scholar
Google Scholar is useful because it directs users to academic articles and
provides:
1. Citation counts as an indicator of research impact
2. Related studies
3. Traceable references
However, not all content on Google Scholar is equally peer-reviewed, so
journal quality and publisher credibility must also be assessed.

Specialized Electronic Databases
Databases offer a more controlled research environment than general
search engines because they:
1. Collect organized, peer-reviewed sources
2. Allow field-specific searching (title, abstract, keywords)
3. Provide specialized filters
This significantly improves research quality, especially for graduation
projects and academic studies.

Al-Manhal Database
Al-Manhal is an important example of an Arabic database
supporting administrative research. Its value lies not only in
language, but also in:
1. Access to Arabic books and journals
2. Using Arabic sources in regional and local contexts
3. Building theoretical backgrounds relevant to Arab business
environments
Full reference details must be recorded, including author, title,
publisher, and year.

Practical Applications of Search Skills
Practice transforms skills into habits. Through application,
managers and researchers learn how to:
1. Select a focused topic (e.g., transformational leadership,
customer satisfaction, change management)
2. Develop effective keywords
3. Select at least one peer-reviewed article
4. Record bibliographic data and extract a main idea
This strengthens research discipline and reduces impression-based
work.

Practical Example of Information Search Skills: Unilever
In its efforts to improve managerial decisions related to product
development and brand sustainability, Unilever begins by defining a
clear managerial topic, such as the impact of transformational
leadership on team performance in multinational companies.
Precise keywords are developed, and academic search engines and
databases are used to locate recent peer-reviewed studies and credible
managerial reports, ensuring relevance and up-to-date information.

Case Study: Unilever College of Business Administration in Yanbu
Unilever faced a managerial challenge resulting from rapid changes in consumer preferences, particularly
with regard to sustainability and digital purchasing behavior. This required reliance on accurate and up-
to-date information to support managerial decision-making.
The company clearly identified its information needs and then used a variety of digital information
sources, including reports from international organizations, digital market studies, and specialized
databases, in addition to analyzing available data through digital platforms.
Unilever was keen to assess the quality of digital information in terms of the credibility of the publishing
source, data timeliness, and methodological rigor before employing it in report preparation and decision
support.
The systematic use of digital information search skills contributed to improving product development
decisions, strengthening marketing strategies, and reducing risks associated with making decisions based
on unreliable information.
Discussion Questions
1. What type of digital information did the company need to support its managerial decisions? Were
they scientific, professional, or a mix of both?
2. How did accurately identifying information needs help improve the efficiency of information
searching within the company?
3. What criteria did the company rely on to evaluate the quality of digital information before using it in
managerial decision-making?
