CHAPTER 4: TRANSFORMER

Question 1

The primary winding of a particular transformer has 200 turns and is connected across a 230V, 50Hz,
single-phase supply. If there are 1200 turns in the secondary winding, what will the voltage across it
be?

Question 2

i. What is the relationship between the currents in the primary and secondary windings of the
transformer?
ii. An ideal single-phase transformer has 2000 windings in its primary coil and 700 windings in its
secondary coil. The main coils are connected to a 240-volt AC, 50Hz. Calculate:

a) Secondary current
b) Current at a primary coil if the current in a secondary coil is 5A

Question 3

List THREE (3) characteristics of an ideal transformer

Question 4

A transformer with 800 primary turns and 200 secondary turns is supplied from a 100V ac supply.
Calculate the secondary voltage.

Question 5

What does it mean by step-up and step-down transformer?

Question 6

A 12Ω resistor is connected across the secondary winding of an ideal transformer whose secondary
voltage is Vs = 120V. Determine the primary voltage Vp if the supply current is Ip = 4A.

Question 7

When the turns ratio of a transformer is 20 and the primary AC voltage is 12 V, calculate the
secondary voltage.
Question 8

If 25 W of power are applied to the primary of an ideal transformer with a turns ratio of 10, the
power delivered to the secondary load is:

Question 9

List three types of transformers and list 4 types of losses in transformers.

Question 10

With a suitable diagram, explain each component of a transformer.
