Chapter 2 : networking
Questions 1: Fill in the Blanks.
1. Connection between various computers and devices is called Network.
2. Sharing files and communication between computers is done through networking.
3. Using files or data from other computer on network is called File sharing .
4. Largest area of networking is WAN/GAN.
5. Geographical arrangement of network order is called topology.
Question: 2 Give Two Answers For Each:
1. Two types of Topologies.
Ans: Physical and Logical Topologies
2. Two types of Large Area Network.
Ans: WAN and GAN
3. Two types of Limited area Network:
Ans: LAN and MAN
4. Combination of tree Topology
Ans: Bus Topology and Star Topology
5. Hybrid Topology
Ans: A combination of two or more different topologies makes for a hybrid topology.
6. Three types of Hub
Ans: Active hub, Passive hub and Intelligent hub.
Question : 3 Brief Answers:
1. What is Network?
Ans: A network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share
resources, exchange files or allow electronic communications.
2. Write down some benefits of Networking.
Ans: Benefits of networking
1) File sharing: By sharing files you can view, modify and copy the files stored on a
different computer on the network.
2) Resource sharing: Resources such as printers, fax machines, storage Devices, webcam,
scanners, modem and many more devices can be shared.
3) Program sharing: You can also share program on a network.
3. What are the types of Networks?
Ans: LAN(Local Area Network): A local Area Network is a computer network that spans a
relatively small area such as a building, different cabins in an office.
MAN(Metropolitan Area Network): A network spanning a physical area larger than a
LAN but smaller than a WAN, such as an entire city.
WAN (Wide Area Network): Wide Area Network occupies a very large area, such as an
entire country or the entire world.. The internet is the best known example of public
WAN
4. What is Network Topology?
Ans: The geographical arrangement of the networks nodes (computers and other devices)
connected to each other is called topology.
5. List down different types of Networks.
Ans: LAN (Local Area Network)
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
WAN (Wide Area Network)
W-LAN (wireless LAN)
CAN (Controlled Area Network)
SAN (Storage area network)
PAN (Personal area network)
GAN (Global Area Network)
EPN (Enterprise private network)
VPN (Virtual private network)
Write a note on Star Topology.
Ans: In star topology, every node (computer workstation or any other peripheral) is
connected to a central node called a hub or switch. This central node provides a common
connection point for all nodes through a hub.
6. Write a note on Tree Topology.
Ans: It is also known as hierarchical Topology. It is a combination of bus topology and star
topology, here the central workstation or the hub of the star topology is connected to the
main bus, along which various star topology are placed. If any particular node is
disrupted, then it will get isolated without affecting the other but if the central hub
disrupts then the whole workstation goes down.
7. Write a note on Hub.
Ans: Network hub is a multi-port device, connecting the computers to the network. They are
generally passive, simply allowing data to pass through. Data sent over the network is
specifically addressed to a destination (by IP address). The hub understands this
information and sends the data onwards.
Question : 3 Detailed Answers:
1. Compare the working of Star Topology & Ring Topology.
Ans:
Star Topology Ring Topology
1)In star topology each device is connected 1) In ring network topology each node
to a central device called hub/switch connects to exactly two other nodes.
through cable
2) All data transferred from one node to 2) Data travels from one device to another
another passes through hub/switch before around entire ring in one direction.
reaching the destination
2. Explain Hybrid Topology with good example.
Ans: A combination of two or more different topologies makes for a hybrid topology.
For example, if there exists a ring topology in one office department while a bus topology in
another department, connecting these two will result in Hybrid topology. Remember
connecting two similar topologies cannot be termed as Hybrid topology. Star-Ring and
Star-Bus networks are most common examples of hybrid network.
