1. Meaning of Development
Development means progress in the economic, social and political conditions of people.
People may have different goals for development such as income, respect, freedom, security
and equality.

Different people can have different goals. A rich farmer may want higher income while a
landless worker may want better wages and employment opportunities.

3. Income and Other Criteria


Besides income, people also value education, healthcare, equal treatment, clean environment
and freedom. Development should improve the quality of life.
