MANUFACTURING PROBLEM
8. A manufacturer produces nuts and bolts. It takes 1 hour of work on machine A and 3 hours on machine B
to produce a packet of nuts. It takes 3 hours on machine A and 1 hour on machine B to produce a packet
of bolts. He earns a profit of 17.50 per packet on nuts and 7.00 per packet on bolts. How many
packets of each should be produced each day so as to maximize his profit , if he operates each of his
machines for at most 12 hours a day? Form an LPP for the problem and solve it graphically.
[CBSE2009]
9. A manufacturer considers that men and women workers are equally efficient and so he pays them at the
same rate. He has 30 and 17 units of workers (male and female) and capital respt , which he uses to
produce two types of goods A and B. To produce one unit of A , 2 workers and 3 units of capital are
required while 3 workers and 1 unit of capital is required to produce one unit of B. If A and B are priced
at 100 and 200 per unit respt , how should he use his resources to maximize the total revenue ? Form
the above as an LPP and solve graphically. Do you agree with this view of the manufacturer that men
and women workers are equally efficient and so should be paid at the same rate ? [CBSE2013]
10. A company manufactures two types of novelty souvenirs made of plywood. Souvenirs of type A require 5
minutes each for cutting and 10 minutes each for assembling. Souvenirs of type B require 8 minutes each for
cutting and 8 minutes each for assembling. There are 3 hours and 20 minutes available for cutting and 4 hours
available or assembling. The profit is 50 each for type A and 60 each for type B souvenirs. How many
souvenirs of each type should the company manufacture in order to maximize profit? Formulate the above LPP

and solve it graphically and also find the maximum profit. [CBSE2019]
11.A manufacturer produces two types of items A and B. One unit of A requires 1½ hours on a machine and 2 hours
by a craftsman. The corresponding times for manufacturing one unit of B by the machine and the craftsman are
3 hours and 1 hour respectively. The profits on each unit of A and B are 10 and 8 respectively. In a week, the
machine is available for 80 hours and the craftsman is available for 70 hours. If the manufacturer can sell all that
he manufactures, to find that how many units each of A and B be made per week for maximum profit, formulate
the above as an LPP. [CBSE2017]
THREE CONSTRAINTS INEQUATIONS
12. A manufacturer makes to types of toys A and B. Three machines are needed for this purpose and the
time (in minutes) required for each toy on the machines is given below: [NCERT]
Types of toys Machines
I II III
A 12 18 6
B 6 0 9
Each machine is available for maximum of 6 hours per day. If the profit on each toy of type A is Rs 7.50
and that on each toy of type B is Rs 5 , show that 15 toys of type A and 30 of type B should be
manufactured in a day to get maximum profit.
ALLOCATION PROBLEM
13.A retired person wants to invest an amount of Rs. 50, 000. His broker recommends investing in two type
of bonds ‘A’ and ‘B’ yielding 10% and 9% return respectively on the invested amount. He decides to
invest at least Rs.20,000 in bond ‘A’ and at least Rs. 10,000 in bond ‘B’. He also wants to invest at least
as much in bond ‘A’ as in bond ‘B’. Solve this linear programming problem graphically to maximise his
returns. [CBSE2016]
14. A dealer wishes to purchase a number of fans and radios. He has only 5,760 to invest and has a space
for at most 20 items. A fan costs him 360 and a radio 240. His expectation is that he can sell a fan at
a profit of 22 and a radio at a profit of 18. Assuming that he can sell all the items he buys , how
should he invest his money for maximum profit? Translate the problem as LPP and solve it graphically.
[CBSE2007]
[Link] a class XII student aged 17 years , rides his motorcycle at 40km/hr, the petrol cost is 2 per km. If he rides at a
speed of 70km/hr , the petrol cost increases to 7 per km. He has 100 to spend on petrol and wishes to cover
the maximum distance within one hour. Express the above as an LPP. [CBSE2018]
16. Kamlesh wants to invest an amount up to 50, 000. In the market , two types of Bonds A and B are available
Bond A offering 10% return on the investment and Bond B pays 15% on the amount invested. She wants to invest
at least 15,000 in Bond A and not more than 20,000 in Bond B. How should she plan the investment in the two
bonds to get maximum return on the investment? Formulate the above as a linear programming problem.
[CBSE2015]
17. The postmaster of a local post office wishes to hire extra helpers during the Deepawali season , because of a
large increase in the volume of mail handling and delivery. Because of the limited office space and the budgetary
conditions , the number of temporary helpers must not exceed 10. According to past experience , a man can
handle 300 letters and 80 packages per day , on the average , and a woman can handle 400 letters and 50 packets
per day. The postmaster believes that the daily volume of extra mail and packages will be no less than 3400 and
680 respectively. A man receives 225 a day and a woman receives 200 a day. How many men and women
helpers should be hired to keep the pay-roll at a minimum? Formulate an LPP and solve it graphically.

DIET PROBLEMS
18.A diet for a sick person must contain at least 4000 units of vitamins , 50 units of minerals and 1400 units
of calories. Two foods A and B are available at a cost of 5 and 4 per unit respt. One unit of the food A
contains 200 units of vitamins , 1 unit of minerals and 40 units of calories , while one unit of the food B
contains 100 units of vitamins , 2 units of minerals and 40 units of calories. Find what combination of the
foods A and B should be used to have least cost but it must satisfy the requirements of the sick person.
Form the question as LPP and solve graphically. [CBSE2008]
19. A dietician wishes to mix together two kinds of food X and Y in such a way that the mixture contains at
least 10 units of vitamin A , 12 units of vitamin B and 8 units of vitamin C. The vitamin contents of one
kg food is given below : [CBSE2003]
Food Vitamin A Vitamin B Vitamin C
X 1 2 3
Y 2 2 1
One kg of food X costs 16 and one kg of food Y costs 20. Find the least cost of the mixture which
will produce the required diet ?
20. Kellogg is a new cereal formed of a mixture of bran and rice that contains at least 88 grams of protein
and at least 36 milligrams of iron. Knowing that bran contains 80 grams of protein and 40 milligrams of
iron per kilogram , and that rice contains 100 grams of protein and 30 milligrams of iron per kilogram ,
find the minimum cost of producing this new cereal if bran costs Rs 5 per kg and rice costs Rs 4 per kg.
[CBSE2002]
21. A dietician wants to develop a special diet using two foods X and Y. Each packet (contains 30g) of food X
contains 12 units of calcium, 4 units of iron, 6 units of cholesterol and 6 units of vitamin A. Each packet of the
same quantity of food Y contains 3 units of calcium, 20 units of iron , 4 units of cholesterol and 3 units of vitamin
A. The diet requires at least 240 units of calcium, at least 460 units of iron and at most 300 units of cholesterol.
