INTRODUCTION:
The role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is indispensable for overall economic
development of a country particularly for developing countries like Bangladesh. Since this sector
is labor intensive with short gestation period, it is capable of increasing national income as well
as rapid employment generation; achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) especially
eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, gender equality and women empowerment. SME
sector has played a vital role in economic development of some prosperous countries of Asia.
Our neighbouring countries have also given due importance on SME. Terming SME as
‘employment generating machine’ they stressed on SME development for higher economic
growth, narrowing the gap of income inequality and poverty alleviation. The present government
has also put much emphasis on the development of SME sector considering it as ‘the driving
force for industrialization.
The importance of SME loans in the context of Bangladesh's economy is significant for the
following reasons:
1. Employment Generation: SMEs are major employers in Bangladesh, and SME loans
help these businesses expand and create more jobs, contributing to a reduction in
unemployment.
2. Economic Growth: SMEs drive economic growth by fostering innovation, diversifying
the economy, and enhancing productivity. Access to loans allows them to invest in
technology, expand operations, and compete effectively.
3. Poverty Alleviation: SMEs often provide income opportunities for individuals in low-
income communities. Loans enable them to improve operations, increase incomes, and
reduce poverty levels.
4. Rural Development: Many SMEs are located in rural areas, and loans support rural
development, infrastructure improvement, and overall economic stability.
5. Financial Inclusion: Access to formal financial services through SME loans promotes
financial inclusion, helping SMEs build credit histories and access other essential
financial services.
6. Export Promotion: SMEs, particularly in the textile and garment sectors, contribute to
Bangladesh's export earnings. Loans enable them to meet global market demands.
7. Entrepreneurship and Innovation: SMEs are hubs of entrepreneurship and innovation,
and loans help them invest in research and development, bringing new products and
services to the market.
8. Government Initiatives: The government of Bangladesh has implemented policies and
initiatives to support SMEs through loans, encouraging entrepreneurship and growth.
