Week 8 Pre-Workshop Task

Reflection on my Written Communication

Communication through the written medium is an important skill that is used in both educational
and professional settings. In my opinion, some of the aspects that contribute to successful written
communication include clarity, organization, conciseness, proper tone, and precision. The aspect
of clarity ensures that the intended message is understandable by the recipient. An organized
document is one in which the thoughts are arranged in a logical order, thus allowing the reader to
comprehend the writer's ideas. Conciseness is equally important because superfluous details tend
to distract the reader from the main point. Tone is also crucial since it has to be adjusted according
to the purpose and the target audience.
Although the above characteristics form the basics in all types of writings, there exists a certain
way in which these characteristics should be used. For instance, an email is characterized by
brevity since it is supposed to address a particular purpose of either giving some information or
updates. An academic report will need a more analytical approach where there will be a detailed
explanation of concepts and use of formal language. A business report will similarly be written
using formal language but more results-oriented.
Among my strengths when communicating in writing is the way I am able to organize my ideas
systematically. I strive to ensure that my writing is structured, allowing for ease of comprehension
by the reader. I also make an effort to simplify my language to prevent ambiguity. Nonetheless, I
feel that I can improve in aspects such as proofreading and varying my sentence structure. There
are times that I may miss out on grammar mistakes or repetition of sentence patterns, resulting in
substandard written work.
The typical approach I take in writing reports starts with the identification of the objective and
target audience. Following this step, I collect information and develop an outline of my thoughts.
Then, I begin the actual writing process where my main goal is to complete my writing in its
entirety without worrying about perfection at this stage. The next step is the revision phase wherein
I enhance my writing through rephrasing and other necessary adjustments.
Building Good Business Relationships
Aside from good communication skills, there are also some key things that must be considered in
establishing a good relationship within the business context. One of these is having trust in the
people you work with, because when they are known to be consistent and dependable, it is likely
that this will develop into trust. Another factor that should not be overlooked is the issue of respect
for others, which involves being courteous and recognizing the efforts and inputs of others.
Listening skills also play an important part in creating good working relationships because of the
need to understand the ideas and opinions of other people. Being adaptable is another quality that
will be helpful in dealing with a wide array of people and situations at work. Lastly, having a
positive attitude towards others and behaving in a professional manner will go a long way in
making good impressions.
