YEAR 11 Mathematics Methods Investigation 1
Graphs of sine and cosine functions are called sinusoids. When you write a sine or cosine
function for a sinusoid, you need to find the values of a , b , h and k for
y=a sin b ( x−h ) + k or y=a cos b (x−¿ h)+ k ¿
Perigee is a point in the moon’s orbit when it is closest to the Earth. The date of one perigee
in 2017 was 18 August 2017. Using the site [Link], find the date of a perigee
to investigate. Use the resources on the site [Link] to plot the graph of
the tides for the date you have chosen. Find a curve that models the tides for the date you
have chosen. Choose a suitable function to model the tides. Using your model, predict the
height of the tide at 6 am on the day following perigee.
Report
Your report on the mathematical investigation should include the following:
A brief outline of the problem and context
The application of the mathematical model or strategy, including
o Relevant data and/or information
o Mathematical calculations/representations (graphs/tables etc) and results using
appropriate representations
o Discussion and interpretation of results, including consideration of the
reasonableness and limitations of the results
The results and conclusions in the context of the problem
A bibliography and appendices, as appropriate
