ABSTRACT
Solar Powered Air Purifier is a clean energy device that helps in cleaning the indoor air quality.
The purpose of this project is to design a cost-effective and eco-friendly device that will help
in purifying air by utilizing solar power as opposed to electricity.
The device contains a solar panel which uses solar energy to provide the required energy in
form of electrical energy to the DC Motor and Fan assembly system. This device works using
a multi-step mechanism of purifying air. First, a jali is used to filter out larger dust particles
before air enters the system. Next, an AC Filter followed by a HEPA filter helps in removing
smaller particles including dust, pollen, and smoke from air. Finally, to kill any microorganism
including bacteria and virus, an ultraviolet (UV) bulb is provided along with the HEPA filter.
After purification, the air is blown out into the surroundings by the help of the fan mechanism.
Overall, this device helps in providing clean air in a pollution-free environment and is quite
sustainable.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
The situation worsens particularly in developing nations, such as India. High levels of
particulates (PM2.5, PM10), gases, and microorganisms are found in cities and even semi-
urban regions. Poor air quality results in various health issues including respiratory problems,
allergies, asthma, and even cardiovascular diseases. Hence, it becomes essential to maintain
the purity of indoor air.
Typical air purifiers are employed for the purpose of improving the indoor air quality.
However, since conventional air purifiers operate using energy derived from non-renewable
energy sources, there is increased usage of energy, thereby leading to increased cost. There are
several rural and remote areas where power availability is not consistent. In such a scenario,
there arises the need for an alternative and efficient approach. The idea of a Solar Powered Air
Purifier was proposed.
A Solar Powered Air Purifier is a device where solar energy is applied to run the
operation of the air purification machine. Solar energy is a clean source of energy that is
renewable and abundantly available and can be converted into electricity through the use of
solar panels. Solar energy is a way of saving costs on energy and minimizing the effects caused
by carbon footprints.
The operation of the solar powered air purifier involves several steps. Solar energy is
collected from sunlight using a solar panel with photovoltaic cells to convert the collected
energy into electric power. The electric power is used to run a DC motor driving the fan to suck
the air into the purifier.
In the initial phase, the protective mesh or jali is fixed at the air intake to filter out large
particles such as dust, hair, and other particles. It aids in avoiding any harm to the inner parts
of the system, thereby increasing the life span of the filter system. In the second phase, the air
1
moves to the AC filter, which captures medium-sized impurities and other particles. Further,
the air passes through the High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter to eliminate all fine
particulates from the air, such as dust, pollen, and other air pollutants.
Moreover, to ensure further purification of the air, the ultraviolet (UV) bulb is fitted in
the HEPA filter section. The UV bulb kills or inactivates all biological microorganisms present
in the air, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This provides the air, purified not only of
particles but also makes sure that the air is biologically pure. The filtered air then moves back
to the surroundings with the aid of the fan.
One of the key aspects of the Solar Powered Air Purifier is its involvement in
environmental protection through the reduction of reliance on electricity generated from fossil
fuels. In this case, the purifier significantly contributes to the decrease in the levels of emission
of greenhouse gases. The device also encourages the use of renewables as the major source of
energy in efforts towards achieving sustainability in the environment.
The current project is concerned with the development of a solar powered air purifier
that incorporates readily available materials such as solar panels, DC motors, filters, and UV
lamps in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of the device in addressing health-related
issues.
In summary, the Solar Powered Air Purifier is a modern technology which aims at
contributing to sustainable development by incorporating air purification techniques and
renewable energy sources. With increasing pollution and concerns regarding health, such
technologies will prove useful soon.
The problem of air pollution is one of the foremost environmental problems encountered in the
modern world today. Industrialization, urbanization, increased vehicular emissions, and
various kinds of construction work have severely impacted air quality. Harmful air pollutants
such as PM2.5 and PM10, dust, smoke, pollen, bacteria, and viruses cause health hazards
including respiratory diseases, asthma, allergies, and chronic diseases.
Existing methods used for air purification rely heavily on electrical energy that makes
them dependent on the availability of an electric supply, which can become difficult in rural
and developing locations where access to electricity is rare. Apart from this, conventional air
2
purifiers mainly focus on particle filtering and cannot effectively get rid of biological pollutants
like bacteria and viruses.
Another challenge is the increasing requirement for energy efficiency and eco-
friendliness. Growing knowledge about renewable energy sources demands incorporation of
solar power into common devices to help conserve natural resources and limit the usage of
fossil fuel-based electricity.
Considering this, there is a need for the development of an efficient air purification
device that can:
The primary goal of this project is the creation of a Solar-Powered Air Purifier that has a
mesh filter for coarse particulates, an AC filter for mid-filtration, a HEPA filter for fine
particulate filtration, and a sterilization unit that will kill all germs. This will require a fan and
a motor to facilitate air movement in the process.
The figure below shows the paradigm of the Design of Solar Powered Air Purifier. The study
focuses on how to Purify the air in an easy way compared to conventional way.

The conceptual framework as illustrated in Fig. 1.1 shows the logical sequence of operations
in creating the sea cleaning vehicle that operates on solar energy. The framework comprises
three main phases: Input, Process, and Output. They provide the basis for a successful
implementation of the project.
Input Phase
This phase involves all important parts that will be used for construction of the purifier
including solar panel, mesh filters, AC filters, HEPA filters, UV bulb, motor, fan, and
electronics.
4
Process Phase
This phase involves assembling and integration of all parts. Sunlight is captured and used to
generate electricity which drives the motor and fan. The air goes through different types of
filtering stages, first through the mesh filters to remove large particles, then through the AC
filters to remove medium size particles, followed by the HEPA filter to remove very small
particles. Lastly, the UV light kills any microbes present in the air.
Output Phase
The output is clean and purified air that does not contain dust and microorganisms.
1.4 Hypothesis
The system suggested (solar powered air purifier) will serve as an environmentally friendly
tool in combating pollution by removing impurities from the air.
Since the suggested design makes use of solar energy as its source, the dependence on
electricity as a power resource is reduced and thus costs and expenses on maintenance will be
cut down, making the system efficient and appropriate for operation in regions with insufficient
power supply.
It is also assumed that the use of multi-stage filtration system, along with UV
sterilization, will greatly increase the efficiency in terms of removing particles of various sizes,
including germs.
Moreover, the system will be easy to operate, affordable and low maintenance.
Additionally, the constant use of such a device is expected to bring improvement in air quality
indoors and around the place of residence, which would have a positive effect on people's
health.

7
These are some of the limitations and restrictions associated with the design of the system:
It is primarily made for compact to medium-sized indoor areas and may not work in large-
scale industrial facilities.
The performance of the system relies on the presence of sunlight and may not work
efficiently during nights or cloudy days (except for the battery-operated option).
The device concentrates exclusively on-air filtration and purification processes and not on
regulating temperatures and humidity levels.
The performance of the purification process will depend on the condition of the filters.
The UV-based system can only perform the sterilization process against microorganisms but
cannot eliminate all kinds of gaseous pollutants.
The product is designed as a prototype and not as a commercially available product.
There could be a small amount of noise produced by the fan/motor of the system.
Filters must be cleaned regularly.
This research holds significant importance as it addresses two critical global challenges: air
pollution and energy sustainability. Rapid industrialization, urbanization, and increasing
vehicular emissions have led to a continuous rise in air contamination, creating an urgent need
for efficient, affordable, and sustainable air purification systems. This study presents a practical
solution by integrating solar energy with advanced air purification techniques.
Health Benefits
Exposure to polluted air can lead to severe health issues such as asthma, bronchitis, lung
infections, and other respiratory diseases. The inclusion of UV sterilization helps in
eliminating bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, thereby improving indoor air quality
and promoting better human health.

conventional electricity. This not only conserves non-renewable resources but also promotes
the transition toward sustainable energy solutions.
Eco-Friendly Solution
The system is designed to minimize environmental impact by using clean energy and
reducing emissions. Unlike traditional air purifiers that depend on grid electricity, this system
helps in lowering the carbon footprint and supports environmentally responsible practices.

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW
The problem of air pollution has been growing into one of the most significant environmental
and public health issues that exist globally today. Indeed, with the fast pace of industries and
urbanization, more air pollution has arisen from the release of dust, smoke, particulate matter
(PM2.5 & PM10), VOCs, and even dangerous microorganisms. All those substances affect
people's health negatively, causing various diseases including respiratory diseases, heart
ailments, and allergy symptoms. In such a situation, clean indoor and outdoor air becomes
crucial.
There are plenty of devices used by people today to clean their indoor air; moreover,
industrial air purification technologies are rather common nowadays. They all utilize electric
power and work with various kinds of air filtration, but in areas lacking access to stable power
supply, they cannot function properly. At the same time, modern tendencies of searching for
energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives make scientists look for other
solutions.
Recently, solar energy has become popular as an efficient and eco-friendly source of
energy for different uses including air purification. In solar air purifiers, photovoltaic panels
harness energy from the sun and transform it into electrical energy that powers fans, motors,
and filters used for purification processes. These devices help reduce reliance on conventional
energy sources and help save costs as well as enhance environmental conservation. They also
have advantages in remote locations where there is no electricity.
There are several air purification technologies, and they include mechanical filtration,
electronic filtration, and sterilization. Out of all these technologies, mechanical filtration with
the use of HEPA filters is among the best. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air and
refers to a filter that can trap at least 99.97% of particles measuring 0.3 microns or more. The
effectiveness of HEPA filters can be attributed to their ability to intercept, impact, and diffuse
tiny particles like dust, pollen, fumes, smoke, and bacteria.
10
The other essential step in air purification systems is known as pre-filtration. The use
of filters like jali filters and AC filters ensures that any large and medium-size particles are
eliminated before air gets to the HEPA filter. This makes it more efficient and increases its
lifespan by reducing clogging of the filter.
In addition to particulate matter, the elimination of living things like bacteria and
viruses is an equally significant step. UV sterilization technology, which uses UV-C radiation
to eliminate the genetic makeup of living organisms thus preventing them from reproducing, is
often used in such cases. This technique works well when combined with filtration processes
in the purification of air.
One other critical element that is emphasized by literature is the role of airflow and the
design of the entire process. Efficient placement of filters, energy efficiency, and optimal
airflow are essential in ensuring maximum efficacy during air purification. The utilization of
DC motors and energy-efficient fans aids in decreasing energy consumption.
The air purification process is a sequential procedure that involves the elimination of
contaminants from the air in a manner that does not cause any adverse effects to the
environment. Firstly, polluted air is introduced into the purification system using fans.
The first stage of this process involves the use of a mesh filter (jali). The filter traps
larger particles, including dust, hair, and other debris. The air moves to the AC filter (pre-filter),
where medium-sized particles are eliminated.
11
Fine particles, such as PM2.5 and smoke, are removed from the air through the HEPA filter.
This stage is vital in purifying the air.
Finally, the air is passed through the ultraviolet sterilizer, where it is exposed to
ultraviolet rays, which eliminate bacteria and viruses. Therefore, this process makes the air
pure and harmless to human health.
The purified air is then emitted into the surroundings. The whole air purification process
uses solar energy, which is harnessed using photovoltaic cells and converted to electrical
energy. This energy powers the device.
From the analysis of the literature available, it can be concluded that air pollution poses a
growing problem which necessitates finding solutions to it. Traditional air purifiers may be
considered effective, however, there is a certain limitation associated with using electricity and
some purifiers not having a microbial sterilizing stage.
The combination of solar energy with multi-stage filtering (such as mesh, activated
carbon and high efficiency particulate air filters), as well as UV sterilization serves as a
comprehensive method of air purification that is efficient, environmentally friendly and
applicable for various situations.
Several research studies have been conducted in the field of air purification systems,
particularly focusing on filtration efficiency, sterilization techniques, and the integration of
renewable energy sources such as solar power.
Studies have shown that HEPA filters can effectively eliminate airborne particulates,
including fine particulates and allergens. This is possible because HEPA filters can operate via
12
several mechanisms, such as interception, impaction, and diffusion, hence ensuring that all
airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns are removed efficiently.
Studies into the use of automation technology have also indicated that the incorporation
of sensors, controllers, and energy management systems leads to better system efficiency and
safety, as well as greater convenience for users. For instance, solar-powered UV sterilization
units with automated control systems have been devised.
Before the advent of modern technology, air purification processes were carried out by using
relatively simple techniques such as ventilation, window opening, and use of electric fans.
These procedures involved the use of fresh air circulation for reduction of indoor pollutants. At
times, cloth screens were used for filtration purposes by blocking coarse dust particles.
However, these practices were relatively ineffective when it comes to eliminating tiny
particulates, poisonous gases, and microorganisms from the air. These methods highly
depended on climatic factors and could not guarantee efficient purification of the air.
To increase the effectiveness of air purification practices, manually assisted air filters were
invented. These devices include portable air purifiers that can be moved from one place to
another for cleaning of the air. This method involves the use of simple filters, such as foam
filters or carbon filters. The efficiency of this technique relies on the regular cleaning or
replacement of the filter media. However, it is relatively ineffective when it comes to removal
of microorganisms from the air.
13
Motor Powered Air Purifying System
Through technology, motorized air purifiers have been invented. The system involves electric
motors and fans which enable the air to enter the purifier and undergo various filtration
processes.
The air purifier works using electric energy and consists of various filters such as HEPA and
activated carbon. The purifier ensures constant air purification process and is suitable for use
indoors. Nevertheless, it requires constant electricity.
Air purifiers in use are those which incorporate multiple stage filtration process such as pre-
filtering, HEPA filtration and sometimes UV sterilization. They are highly effective in
eliminating dust, smoke, pollutants, and microorganisms.
The Solar powered air purifier is one of the most recent and ecological developments in air
purification. The use of solar panels to capture sunlight and turn it into electrical energy that
powers the motor, fan, and UV system is done in this system.
The components of the system include a jali filter, AC filter, and HEPA filter to catch
large, medium, and fine particulates respectively. A UV bulb is also included to destroy any
microorganism such as bacteria and viruses.
Energy generated from solar panels can either be directly utilized or even stored in
batteries to ensure sustained power flow. Such a system eliminates electricity usage and ensures
cost savings and sustainable energy.
Continuous air purification, increased effectiveness, and energy saving can be achieved
from such a system. Because of its renewable energy nature and advanced air purification
mechanisms, it is ideal for both urban and rural areas, more so where electricity is not readily
available.
14
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the project design, project development, its operation, and testing
procedure.
The design of Solar Powered Air Purifier encompasses a systematic and holistic process which
incorporates ideas from both mechanical and electrical engineering fields. First, the essential
parts used during construction include solar panel, DC motor, fan, filters (mesh, AC, HEPA),
UV bulb and electronics among others.
At the onset, design of the air purifier's physical structure is made to ensure that all
necessary parts are correctly incorporated. Next, solar panel is chosen taking into account the
power output needed while the use of a rechargeable battery is also considered. Finally, the
motor and fan are chosen for effective suction and air circulation.
Problem identification and analysis are crucial to the successful implementation of the Solar
Powered Air Purifier project. Nowadays, air pollution is becoming a big challenge in urban
settings, industrial sites, classrooms, hospitals, workplaces, and even our houses. Contaminated
air contains dust, smoke, toxic gases, allergens, bacteria, and viruses that can harm people's
health and lead to various breathing issues, allergies, asthma, and other respiratory ailments.
Traditional air purifiers run using electrical energy supplied by power grids, thus contributing
to high energy consumption and rising costs of electricity. Continuous power supply is also not
always possible in many regions, which reduces the efficiency and economic viability of the
traditional air purifier.
The problem of non-renewable energy usage is another big concern. Most industrialized
air purifiers consume constant electrical power for running their motors, fans, and filters. Thus,
high energy consumption and greater environmental pollution are inevitable when using
15
conventional air purifiers. The necessity for an innovative air purification technology, which
will be energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, portable, and applicable to renewable energy
sources, is apparent.
This project’s investigation revolves around the creation of a purifier that will be
capable of cleansing the polluted air using sunlight. During the analysis, various factors causing
air pollution as well as various purification techniques have been investigated. It was found out
that air consists of particles of various sizes ranging from large dust particles to tiny germs and
bacteria. Thus, a multi-step filtration process was required for its purification.
The first step in the investigation was finding out how to purify air of its larger elements.
To do this, a metallic screen or jali was used for filtering out any large dust particles, hair, or
other impurities. Next, an AC filter was chosen for filtering air of its moderately sized dust and
smoke particles. On further analysis, it was seen that the HEPA filter was quite efficient in
catching fine particles, allergens, bacteria, and other pollutants in the air.
The research process for the proposed project Solar Powered Air Purifier involves
researching various existing air purifiers along with renewable energy sources. Various
references from literature including research papers, journal articles, online materials, etc., are
made to know how the air filtration and purification process works. Research is also conducted
on using solar power, HEPA filtration, UV sterilization, DC motors, fans, batteries, and various
other aspects.
16
3.4 Conceptualization
The idea of Solar Powered Air Purifier comes out after extensive research in the field of rising
air pollution and designing a purification process based on efficient solar energy with
minimized use of electricity. This purification system is made in such a manner that the polluted
air can be cleaned with the help of solar energy without increasing the consumption of electrical
energy.
This air purifier is made in such a way that air enters the system through fan driven by
a DC motor. In the initial stage, the polluted air first passes through a metal mesh or jali, which
filters out all the larger particles and undesired elements of the polluted air. After this stage, the
air passes through the AC filter which filters out the particles of dust and smoke.
In the final stage, the air passes through HEPA filter, which filters out all fine airborne
particles and even allergens and bacteria. To further filter out the remaining bacteria, a UV bulb
has been placed inside the HEPA filter chamber.
Mainly the designing stage of the Solar Powered Air Purifier revolves around developing an
effective purification device utilizing mechanical, electrical, and filtering components. The
design process includes ensuring smooth airflow, efficient filtration, adequate sterilization, and
utilization of solar power.
For the purifier, a front-mounted fan along with DC Motor is provided, enabling the
intake of contaminated air in the purifier. It is positioned such that continuous airflow takes
place inside the purifier.
The initial compartment of the purifier consists of the mesh screen or Jali, which
functions as a pre-filter to prevent entry of large airborne particles into the purifier. An AC filter
is positioned right behind the metal mesh to extract any medium dust particle and smoke.
The purification unit consists of a HEPA filter chamber, where tiny airborne particles,
pollutants, allergens, and bacteria are filtered out. This HEPA filter chamber incorporates a
well-designed UV bulb to achieve ultraviolet sterilization. It helps in removing microorganisms
from the air being purified.
17
The outer body or the frame of the purifier has been designed keeping portability and
durability factors in mind. Adequate spacing is ensured between filters and electrical
components. Ventilation openings have also been provided inside the frame.
The solar cell is fixed on the top or exterior side of the filter where it can absorb sunlight
in abundance. The energy obtained is stored in a battery which runs the fan, motor, and the UV
light bulb. Wiring and switches are fixed properly for the proper functioning of the system.
While designing the air purifier, parameters like efficiency of the filtration process, flow
rate, energy usage, ease of carrying the equipment, and maintenance are studied meticulously
to make the system economical and environment friendly.

Parts Description
The solar panel used in this project is a 15W, 12V monocrystalline type, which serves as the
primary source of energy for the solar-powered sea cleaning vehicle. Monocrystalline panels
are chosen due to their higher efficiency and better performance in low-light conditions. The
panel converts solar energy into electrical energy, which is then used to charge the battery and
power the system components. It is mounted on the top of the structure to ensure maximum
exposure to sunlight. The panel provides a stable output suitable for small-scale applications
and can support continuous operation during daytime. Its lightweight and compact design make
it suitable for integration into the floating structure. The output from the panel is regulated
using a solar charge controller to prevent overcharging and voltage fluctuations. Proper
positioning and tilt angle are maintained to achieve optimal performance. Overall, the solar
panel ensures eco-friendly and sustainable operation of the system.
Design of the structure of the air purifier involves the use of wooden boards in order to create
strength, stability, and support to the various components of the device. The wooden board
forms the main platform where the solar panels, the filters, the motor, the fan, the batteries, and
23
electrical components can be fixed. The material has been chosen owing to its availability,
lightweight nature, affordability, and ease of construction. The overall design of the structure
involves a compact and strong configuration to facilitate proper placement of the various
components and flow of air through the purifier.
Another important part of the air purifier is the DC motor-fan assembly. The DC motor will be
powered by electricity supplied from the solar energy source and stored in the battery. The
attached fan will facilitate airflow by drawing contaminated air into the air purifier and blowing
out clean air. Fan placement is appropriately ensured for effective air movement within the
device. DC motors are chosen for their low power requirements, ease of use, and suitability for
24
solar-based systems. The fan runs constantly to enhance air purification effectiveness and
provide appropriate ventilation.

HEPA Filter
The HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is used as the main filtration component in
the purifier. It can trap microscopic dust particles, smoke, pollen, allergens, bacteria, and other
harmful pollutants present in the air. The HEPA filter provides high filtration efficiency and
improves indoor air quality significantly. It is installed inside a separate chamber to ensure
proper airflow through the filter surface. The filter works effectively with the fan system and
helps in delivering clean and healthy air to the surroundings.
AC Filter
The AC filter is used as a pre-filtration stage before the HEPA filter. It removes medium-sized
dust particles, smoke particles, and other impurities from the incoming air. The use of the AC
filter helps in reducing the load on the HEPA filter and increases its service life. It also improves
the overall filtration performance of the purifier system. The filter is lightweight, easily
replaceable, and suitable for continuous operation.

27
Mesh Filter
The mesh filter is used as the first stage of filtration in the solar powered air purifier. It is made
using a metal jali or fine wire mesh that helps in blocking large dust particles, hair, insects,
paper particles, and other unwanted materials from entering the purifier system. The mesh filter
acts as a pre-filter and protects the internal filters from excessive dust accumulation.
The filter is installed at the front side of the purifier near the fan section so that incoming
polluted air first passes through it. By stopping large particles at the initial stage, the mesh filter
improves the efficiency and lifespan of the AC filter and HEPA filter. The filter is lightweight,
reusable, easy to clean, and suitable for long-term operation.
The mesh filter also helps in maintaining smooth airflow inside the purifier while
reducing blockage in the filtration chamber. Its simple construction, low maintenance
requirement, and effective pre-filtration capability make it an important component of the air
purification system.
UV Bulb
The UV bulb is installed inside the HEPA filter chamber of the solar powered air purifier to
improve air sterilization and purification efficiency. The ultraviolet (UV) light emitted by the
bulb helps in killing harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and germs present in
the air. This process improves the hygiene and safety of the purified air before it is released
into the surroundings.
28
The UV bulb works along with the HEPA filter to provide a dual purification process.
While the HEPA filter traps fine dust particles and pollutants, the UV bulb disinfects the trapped
microorganisms and prevents their growth inside the purifier. The bulb is positioned carefully
inside the chamber to ensure effective exposure of air to ultraviolet light.
The UV bulb operates using the electrical energy supplied through the solar-powered
system and consumes low power, making it suitable for renewable energy applications. Its
compact size, effective sterilization capability, and low maintenance requirements make it an
important component of the purifier system. Overall, the UV bulb enhances the air purification
performance and helps in providing cleaner and healthier air.

The following section describes the initial steps involved in assembling the Solar Powered Air
Purifier. These steps help in proper planning, accurate fabrication, safe installation, and
efficient working of the entire purification system. The assembly process is carried out
carefully to ensure smooth airflow, proper filtration, and reliable operation of all electrical and
mechanical components.
The first step of the assembly process involves research, planning, and preparation of
the layout design. During this stage, the working principle of the purifier system is studied and
29
the arrangement of components such as the solar panel, battery, charge controller, DC motor,
fan, filters, and UV bulb is finalized. Proper measurements and dimensions are taken before
beginning fabrication work. A simple structural design is prepared to ensure compact size,
proper airflow, and ease of maintenance.
After the layout planning, the fabrication of the wooden structure begins. Wooden
planks are selected as the base material because they are lightweight, strong, economical, and
easy to work with. The wooden pieces are measured according to the required dimensions and
then cut carefully using suitable tools. The cut sections are joined using screws, nails,
adhesives, and support brackets to form a rigid and stable frame. Proper care is taken to
maintain alignment and sufficient space for mounting all components. Once the frame is
prepared, mounting supports and holders for the motor, fan, filters, solar panel, and electrical
components are installed. Drilling operations are performed where necessary for fixing screws,
wiring connections, and mounting accessories. The positions of all components are checked
properly before final assembly to avoid misalignment and airflow blockage.
The DC motor and fan assembly is then mounted at the front side of the purifier
structure. The fan is positioned carefully to ensure proper suction of polluted air into the
filtration chamber. After this, the mesh filter is installed as the first filtration stage to block
large dust particles and unwanted materials from entering the purifier. Behind the mesh filter,
the AC filter is fitted properly to remove medium-sized dust and smoke particles. The HEPA
filter chamber is then assembled carefully to trap fine airborne pollutants, allergens, and
harmful particles. Proper sealing is maintained around the filters to prevent air leakage and
ensure maximum filtration efficiency. The UV bulb is installed inside the HEPA filter section
to sterilize the air and kill germs, bacteria, and microorganisms present in the airflow. Safe
electrical connections and proper insulation are provided during UV bulb installation to avoid
electrical hazards. After completing the filtration assembly, the solar panel is mounted on the
upper side of the structure where it can receive sufficient sunlight. The solar charge controller
and 6V rechargeable battery are then connected to regulate and store the generated electrical
energy. Proper wiring connections are made between the solar panel, battery, motor, fan, UV
bulb, and switches to ensure smooth power distribution throughout the system.
Finally, all components are inspected carefully to check alignment, electrical safety,
airflow direction, and structural stability. Trial operation of the purifier is carried out to verify
proper functioning of the fan, filters, UV bulb, and solar charging system. Necessary
30
adjustments and improvements are made wherever required to achieve efficient air purification
performance.
The construction and assembly of the Solar Powered Air Purifier are carried out systematically
to ensure proper integration of mechanical, electrical, and filtration components. The process
begins with the fabrication of the base structure, followed by installation of the filtration
system, airflow mechanism, solar power system, and electrical units.
Initially, the frame of the purifier is constructed using wooden planks to provide a rigid
and stable structure. The wooden materials are measured and cut according to the required
dimensions and then joined using screws, adhesives, and support brackets. Proper care is taken
to maintain stability, sufficient ventilation space, and proper arrangement of all components
inside the purifier body. The structure is designed in a compact and lightweight manner for
easy handling and portability.
After preparing the base structure, mounting supports and holders for the fan, motor,
filters, UV bulb, battery, and solar panel are installed. Drilling and fitting operations are carried
out carefully to ensure accurate positioning of each component. All mounting positions are
inspected before final assembly to avoid vibration, airflow blockage, and misalignment.
The filtration assembly process starts with the installation of the mesh filter at the front
side of the purifier. The mesh filter acts as the first stage of purification by blocking large dust
particles, hair, and unwanted materials from entering the system. Behind the mesh filter, the
AC filter is fitted properly to remove medium-sized dust particles and smoke contaminants.
Next, the HEPA filter chamber is assembled carefully inside the purifier structure. The
HEPA filter is positioned in such a way that maximum airflow passes through it for effective
filtration of microscopic dust particles, allergens, bacteria, and pollutants. Proper sealing
around the filter edges is maintained to prevent leakage of unfiltered air.
The UV bulb is then installed inside the HEPA filter chamber to improve air
sterilization. The UV light helps in killing harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses,
and germs present in the airflow. Proper insulation and protective mounting are provided during
installation to ensure electrical safety and reliable operation.
31
After completion of the filtration section, the DC motor and fan assembly are installed
at the front side of the purifier. The fan is connected directly to the motor shaft to create airflow
inside the system. Proper alignment of the fan is maintained to ensure smooth air suction and
continuous circulation of purified air. The motor is selected for low power consumption and
compatibility with the solar-powered system.
The electrical power system is assembled next. A 15W solar panel is mounted at the top
side of the purifier structure where it can receive maximum sunlight exposure. The solar panel
is connected to the solar charge controller, which regulates voltage and charging of the 6V
rechargeable battery. The battery stores solar energy and supplies power to the DC motor, fan,
and UV bulb during operation.
All electrical wiring connections are done carefully using insulated wires and
connectors to avoid short circuits and power loss. Switches and connectors are mounted
properly for safe operation and easy control of the purifier system.
After assembling all components, the complete system is checked thoroughly for proper
alignment, secure electrical connections, airflow direction, and filtration efficiency. Individual
components such as the fan, UV bulb, and solar charging system are tested separately before
performing complete system testing. Necessary adjustments are made wherever required to
improve performance and operational stability.
Thus, the construction and assembly process ensures that all components are integrated
properly, resulting in an efficient, eco-friendly, and functional Solar Powered Air Purifier
capable of providing cleaner and healthier air using renewable solar energy.
The operation and testing of the Solar Powered Air Purifier are performed to evaluate the
performance, efficiency, and reliability of the system under practical working conditions. The
system consists of a 15W solar panel, 6V rechargeable battery, solar charge controller, DC
motor and fan assembly, mesh filter, AC filter, HEPA filter, UV bulb, and wooden frame
structure. All components are tested together to ensure proper coordination and smooth
functioning of the purifier system.
After powering ON the system, the DC motor and fan assembly begin operating to
create airflow inside the purifier. The fan pulls polluted air into the filtration chamber through
the mesh filter. The mesh filter is tested for its ability to stop large dust particles and unwanted
materials from entering the purifier. The air then passes through the AC filter, where medium-
sized dust particles and smoke contaminants are removed. The HEPA filter is tested for its
efficiency in trapping microscopic dust particles, allergens, bacteria, and harmful pollutants
from the air. Proper airflow through the filter chamber is observed to ensure effective
purification without blockage or leakage.
The UV bulb installed inside the HEPA filter section is tested to verify its sterilization
performance. The ultraviolet light helps in killing harmful microorganisms such as bacteria,
viruses, and germs present in the airflow. Proper illumination and safe operation of the UV
bulb are checked during testing. The solar panel is tested under sunlight conditions to examine
its ability to generate sufficient electrical energy for operating the purifier and charging the
battery. Charging performance is monitored under different light intensities to ensure reliable
operation of the system. The battery backup is also tested to check continuous operation when
sunlight is not available.
During product testing, the complete purifier system is operated continuously for a
specific period to observe airflow performance, filtration efficiency, noise level, electrical
stability, and overall reliability. All components are inspected for heating, vibration, airflow
leakage, and power loss during operation. The testing results show that the Solar Powered Air
Purifier works effectively in removing dust particles, pollutants, and harmful microorganisms
from the air while operating on renewable solar energy. The system provides an eco-friendly,
energy-efficient, and low-cost solution for improving air quality in indoor and outdoor
environments.
Testing procedures are carefully conducted to achieve accurate and reliable results for the Solar
Powered Air Purifier. Multiple trials are performed to evaluate the performance, efficiency,
durability, and working stability of the purifier system under practical operating conditions.
33
Initially, the complete structure of the purifier is inspected to ensure proper assembly and secure
placement of all components. The strength and stability of the wooden frame are checked to
confirm that the structure can support the solar panel, filters, motor, battery, and electrical
components properly. The alignment of filters, fan, and electrical units is also verified to avoid
vibration and airflow leakage during operation. Next, the airflow system is tested by operating
the DC motor and fan assembly. The airflow generated by the fan is analysed to ensure smooth
suction of polluted air into the purifier chamber. The performance of the fan motor, airflow
speed, and smoothness of operation are observed carefully.
The mesh filter is tested by exposing the purifier to air containing large dust particles
and unwanted materials. The filter performance is evaluated based on its ability to block large
particles effectively without restricting airflow. The AC filter and HEPA filter are tested to
examine their filtration efficiency. Different dust particles and smoke contaminants are
introduced into the airflow, and the purifier performance is observed based on the reduction of
airborne particles. The HEPA filter performance is analysed for its capability to trap
microscopic dust, allergens, and harmful pollutants effectively.
The UV bulb is tested during operation to verify proper sterilization performance. The
illumination of the UV light and its ability to disinfect the airflow by killing bacteria and germs
are observed carefully. Electrical safety and stable functioning of the UV bulb are also checked
during continuous operation. The solar power system is tested under sunlight conditions to
verify the performance of the 15W solar panel and solar charge controller. The charging
capability of the 6V rechargeable battery is monitored under different light conditions. Battery
discharge rate, backup time, and power stability are also analysed during operation.
The following procedures are carried out to gather detailed performance data of the Solar
Powered Air Purifier. The tests are repeated several times to obtain accurate and consistent
results.
34
a) Visual Inspection
An overall visual inspection is conducted to analyse the working condition of the purifier
system. The operation of the fan, airflow direction, filter arrangement, and UV bulb functioning
are observed carefully. The alignment of all components, smooth operation of the motor, and
stability of the wooden structure are checked properly. Any vibration, loose connection, airflow
leakage, or operational issue is identified and corrected. The purification performance is
visually evaluated based on the reduction of dust particles and cleanliness of outgoing air.
The filtration efficiency of the purifier is measured by observing the amount of dust and
pollutants removed from the air over a fixed operating period. Air containing dust particles and
smoke is passed through the purifier, and the performance of the mesh filter, AC filter, and
HEPA filter is analysed. The efficiency is determined by comparing the number of pollutants
before and after filtration. This helps in evaluating the effectiveness of the filtration system and
overall purifier performance.
The airflow speed and circulation performance of the purifier are tested by measuring the air
movement produced by the DC fan. Proper airflow is necessary for effective filtration and
smooth operation of the purifier. The fan performance, air suction capability, and clean air
delivery are analysed during continuous operation. The test also helps in checking airflow
balance and proper ventilation inside the purifier chamber.
e) UV Sterilization Testing
The UV bulb performance is tested to verify its ability to sterilize air and reduce harmful
microorganisms. The operation of the UV light is observed under working conditions to ensure
35
proper functioning and stable illumination. The sterilization chamber is checked for safety,
proper positioning, and effective exposure of airflow to ultraviolet light.
The purifier is operated continuously for a long duration to evaluate its reliability, durability,
and thermal performance. During this test, all components such as the motor, fan, filters, UV
bulb, battery, and solar charging system are monitored carefully. Heating, vibration, noise, and
power fluctuations are checked to ensure stable and efficient operation of the purifier over
extended working periods.
Thus, the production and product testing procedures confirm that the Solar Powered Air
Purifier operates effectively, provides reliable filtration and sterilization, and works efficiently
using renewable solar energy.

CHAPTER 4
The project combines mechanical, electrical, and filtration components into a compact
structure. The major components used in the system include a 15W solar panel, solar charge
controller, 6V rechargeable battery, DC motor and fan assembly, mesh filter, AC filter, HEPA
filter, UV bulb, and wooden frame structure. All components are integrated carefully to achieve
smooth airflow, proper filtration, and reliable operation.
The research work for the project started with studying the increasing problem of air pollution
and the harmful effects of contaminated air on human health. Existing air purification methods
and solar-powered systems were analysed to understand their working principles, advantages,
and limitations. Various research papers, online resources, and technical references were
studied to gather information regarding filtration systems, solar energy utilization, airflow
mechanisms, and UV sterilization techniques.
After completing the research stage, the design and conceptualization process was
carried out. Different design concepts were prepared and compared based on efficiency,
compactness, ease of fabrication, power consumption, and cost. The final design was selected
to provide effective air purification using renewable solar energy.
The structure of the purifier was developed using wooden planks to provide stability
and support for all components. Proper spacing and mounting arrangements were maintained
for smooth airflow and easy maintenance. The front side of the purifier was designed with a
DC motor and fan assembly to pull polluted air into the filtration chamber. The filtration system
developed in multiple stages to improve purification efficiency. Initially, a mesh filter was
installed to block large dust particles and unwanted materials. Behind the mesh filter, an AC
37
filter was installed to remove medium-sized dust and smoke particles. The HEPA filter chamber
was then designed to capture microscopic pollutants, allergens, and harmful airborne particles.
To improve air sterilization, a UV bulb was installed inside the HEPA filter section. The
ultraviolet light helps in killing bacteria, viruses, and germs present in the airflow. This
combination of HEPA filtration and UV sterilization significantly improves the quality of
purified air.
The electrical power system was developed using a 15W solar panel and a 6V
rechargeable battery. The solar panel converts sunlight into electrical energy and charges the
battery through the solar charge controller. The stored energy is then used to operate the DC
motor, fan, and UV bulb. Proper electrical connections, switches, and insulated wiring were
provided for safe and reliable operation. After fabrication and assembly, the complete purifier
system was tested under practical conditions. The airflow performance, filtration efficiency,
solar charging capability, battery backup, and UV sterilization performance were observed
carefully. The testing results showed that the purifier works effectively and provides clean and
healthier air using renewable solar energy.
The research conducted for the project focused on understanding air pollution problems and
developing an efficient solar-powered purification system. Various existing air purifier models
and filtration technologies were studied to identify suitable methods for improving air quality
while reducing power consumption.
Different types of filters were analysed during the research stage. It was observed that
a multi-stage filtration process provides better purification compared to single-stage systems.
Therefore, the purifier design includes a mesh filter, AC filter, and HEPA filter to remove
pollutants of different particle sizes effectively. Research was also carried out on ultraviolet
sterilization systems to understand their effectiveness in killing microorganisms. Based on the
collected information, a UV bulb was selected for installation inside the HEPA chamber to
improve air sterilization performance. The airflow mechanism was designed carefully to ensure
smooth movement of air through all filtration stages. The DC motor and fan assembly were
selected based on low power consumption, compact size, and compatibility with solar-powered
operation.
38
The solar energy system was designed using a 15W solar panel and a 6V rechargeable
battery. A solar charge controller was integrated into the system to regulate charging and
provide safe electrical operation. The use of solar energy reduces electricity consumption and
supports environmentally friendly operation.
The final design of the purifier was prepared considering important factors such as
filtration efficiency, airflow rate, structural stability, power consumption, portability,
maintenance, and overall cost. The design provides a compact, lightweight, and economical air
purification system suitable for practical use.
The initial conceptual design of the Solar Powered Air Purifier was prepared after completing
research and data analysis. The design focused on achieving efficient air purification while
using renewable solar energy as the primary power source.
The front section of the purifier was designed with a fan and DC motor arrangement to
create airflow inside the system. The filtration chamber was arranged in stages to improve dust
removal efficiency and reduce filter blockage. The mesh filter was positioned at the front side,
followed by the AC filter and HEPA filter chamber.
The UV bulb was installed carefully inside the HEPA filter section to ensure effective
sterilization of air. Proper insulation and protective mounting arrangements were provided for
electrical safety. The wooden frame structure was designed to provide stability and support for
all components. The solar panel was mounted on the upper side of the purifier to receive
maximum sunlight exposure for better power generation. The battery and electrical
components were installed safely inside the structure.
After assembling the system, testing was performed under practical conditions. The
airflow generated by the fan was found sufficient for proper filtration. The mesh filter
successfully blocked large dust particles, while the AC filter and HEPA filter effectively
removed smaller pollutants and allergens from the air.
The UV bulb functioned properly and provided effective sterilization inside the
filtration chamber. The solar panel generated sufficient electrical energy for charging the
battery and operating the purifier components. The battery backup provided continuous
operation even during low sunlight conditions.
39
The testing results confirmed that the purifier performs effectively in reducing airborne
pollutants and improving air quality. The system also demonstrated low power consumption,
stable operation, and eco-friendly performance.
The selection of materials is an important stage in the development of the solar-powered air
purifier. The materials were selected based on factors such as lightweight structure, durability,
heat resistance, corrosion resistance, cost, and availability. Since the system is designed to
operate using solar energy and provide continuous air purification, special attention was given
to selecting materials that are strong, portable, and capable of supporting electronic as well as
mechanical components safely.
For the structural body of the purifier, lightweight plastic sheets, acrylic panels, and
wooden support materials were used. These materials provide sufficient strength while keeping
the overall weight of the system low. The outer body protects the internal components from
dust and environmental damage. The frame also provides proper mounting support for the solar
panel, battery, DC fan, UV bulb, filters, and control circuits.
The filtration section consists of multiple layers for effective purification. A mesh filter
is used as the primary filtering stage to block larger dust particles, hair, and debris. The HEPA
filter is used as the main purification filter because of its high efficiency in removing fine dust,
smoke particles, pollen, and microorganisms from the air. The filter housing is designed
carefully to ensure smooth airflow and proper air circulation inside the purifier.
The electronic components were selected based on power efficiency, compatibility, and
safe operation. A 15W solar panel is used as the main energy source for converting sunlight
into electrical energy. A solar charge controller is connected between the solar panel and battery
to regulate charging and prevent overcharging or deep discharge. A 6V rechargeable battery is
used to store electrical energy so that the purifier can operate even when sunlight is unavailable.
The air circulation mechanism uses a DC motor-driven fan for suction and airflow
generation. The fan pulls polluted air through the mesh filter and HEPA filter for purification.
An ultraviolet (UV) bulb is also installed inside the chamber to help reduce bacteria and
microorganisms present in the air. Proper insulation and wiring protection were provided
during fabrication to ensure safe operation of the system.
40
During fabrication, all components were assembled carefully on the main frame. The
solar panel was mounted at the top position for maximum sunlight exposure. The filters and
fan assembly were fixed properly to avoid air leakage and vibration. Electrical connections
were soldered and insulated properly for reliable operation. After assembly, the purifier was
tested under different operating conditions, and necessary adjustments were made to improve
airflow, filtration efficiency, and power utilization.
Electronics System
The electronics system plays a major role in controlling and operating the solar-powered air
purifier. It consists of the solar panel, charge controller, rechargeable battery, DC fan motor,
UV bulb, wiring system, and switching components. The complete electronics arrangement
ensures efficient energy management and proper operation of the purifier.
The 15W solar panel converts solar energy into electrical energy during daytime
operation. The generated energy is supplied to the solar charge controller, which regulates
voltage and current supplied to the battery. The controller protects the battery from
overcharging, reverse current flow, and voltage fluctuation. The stored energy in the 6V
rechargeable battery provides backup power during cloudy weather or nighttime operation.
The DC motor fan is the main air circulation component of the purifier. It creates suction
force and continuously pulls polluted air into the filtration chamber. The airflow passes through
the mesh filter and HEPA filter, where dust, smoke particles, and impurities are removed. The
purified air is then released back into the environment.
The UV bulb is connected to the power supply system and installed inside the purifier
chamber. It helps in reducing harmful microorganisms and improves the purification process.
The switching arrangement allows independent control of the fan and UV section for better
energy management.
The electrical wiring system was designed carefully to minimize power loss and ensure
safe operation. Proper insulation and connectors were used to avoid short circuits and
overheating. The compact arrangement of components improves system reliability and makes
maintenance easier.
41
Mechanism (Working System)
The mechanism of the solar-powered air purifier is designed to perform air purification using
solar energy. The complete system works through the combined operation of the solar power
unit, air circulation system, and filtration mechanism.
When sunlight falls on the solar panel, electrical energy is generated and supplied to
the charge controller. The controller regulates the charging process and stores energy in the
rechargeable battery. The stored power is then supplied to the DC fan motor and UV bulb for
purifier operation.
The DC fan creates suction and draws polluted air from the surrounding environment
into the purifier chamber. The air first passes through the mesh filter, which removes larger
particles such as dust, hair, and suspended impurities. After preliminary filtration, the air moves
through the HEPA filter where microscopic dust particles, smoke, pollen, and fine contaminants
are removed effectively.
Inside the purification chamber, the UV bulb exposes the air to ultraviolet radiation
which helps reduce bacteria and harmful microorganisms. After passing through all purification
stages, clean and purified air is released back into the atmosphere through the outlet section.
The entire system operates using renewable solar energy, reducing electricity
consumption and making the purifier environmentally friendly. The battery backup system
allows continuous operation even during low sunlight conditions.
Frame
The frame of the solar-powered air purifier is designed to provide structural support, stability,
and protection to all components. The frame is constructed using lightweight yet strong
materials such as plastic sheets, acrylic panels, and wooden supports. It supports the solar
panel, filters, fan, battery, UV bulb, and electronic components properly.
The frame design also ensures proper airflow inside the purifier. Openings and
ventilation sections are provided carefully to allow smooth entry and exit of air. The compact
structure makes the purifier portable and suitable for indoor as well as outdoor applications.
Filter Assembly
The filter assembly consists of the mesh filter and HEPA filter arranged in sequential order for
efficient purification. The mesh filter acts as the primary filtration layer and blocks larger dust
42
particles and debris. The HEPA filter acts as the secondary purification stage and removes fine
airborne particles and pollutants.
The filter assembly is mounted securely inside the purifier chamber to prevent air
leakage and maintain proper airflow direction. The arrangement also allows easy removal and
replacement of filters during maintenance.
The air purification system is responsible for cleaning polluted air and improving air quality.
The system uses mechanical filtration and ultraviolet purification techniques together for better
efficiency.
The DC fan continuously circulates air through the purification chamber. Dust particles,
smoke, pollen, and microorganisms are removed during the filtration process. The UV bulb
provides additional sterilization by reducing bacterial contamination in the airflow.
The system is designed to consume low power while providing effective purification
performance. Continuous airflow and proper filter arrangement improve overall purification
efficiency.
The power supply system consists of the solar panel, charge controller, battery, and electrical
wiring connections. The 15W solar panel generates electrical energy from sunlight. The solar
charge controller regulates charging and protects the battery from electrical damage.
The 6V rechargeable battery stores energy and supplies backup power for continuous
purifier operation. The system is designed for low power consumption and efficient energy
utilization. The use of solar energy makes the purifier economical and environmentally
friendly.
The fabrication process started with the preparation of the purifier frame and mounting
structure. The body frame was cut and assembled according to the design dimensions. After
frame preparation, the solar panel mounting section was installed at the top position.
The DC fan, UV bulb, mesh filter, and HEPA filter were fixed carefully inside the
purifier chamber. The battery and charge controller were mounted securely to avoid vibration
43
and loose connections. All electrical wiring was connected properly with insulation and safety
precautions.
After complete assembly, the purifier was tested for airflow, filtration efficiency, battery
charging, and overall system operation. Necessary adjustments were made to improve
performance and ensure stable working conditions.
After the fabrication and assembly phase, the solar-powered air purifier was tested to ensure
proper functioning of all components and systems. Individual testing of electrical and
mechanical components was carried out before complete system operation. The main
components such as the 15W solar panel, solar charge controller, 6V rechargeable battery, DC
motor fan, UV bulb, HEPA filter, mesh filter, switches, and wiring connections were checked
carefully to verify correct installation and operation.
The electrical system was tested first to ensure proper power generation, battery
charging, and power distribution. The solar panel output voltage was measured under sunlight
conditions to verify energy generation capability. The solar charge controller was tested to
ensure safe charging of the battery and protection against overcharging. The battery backup
performance was also checked by operating the purifier without direct sunlight.
The mechanical and airflow systems were then tested individually. The DC fan motor
was examined for smooth rotation, airflow generation, noise level, and power consumption.
The airflow inside the purifier chamber was observed to ensure that air passed properly through
the mesh filter and HEPA filter without leakage. The UV bulb was also tested for stable
operation and proper illumination inside the purification chamber.
After individual component testing, the complete air purifier system was operated
continuously under normal environmental conditions. During the initial trials, small issues such
as loose wiring connections, airflow imbalance, and filter fitting adjustments were observed.
Necessary corrections and improvements were made to achieve stable performance and
efficient air circulation.
For experimentation, the purifier was tested in different indoor and semi-outdoor
environments containing dust, smoke, and suspended particles. The fan continuously pulled
polluted air into the purification chamber, where the mesh filter removed larger particles and
44
the HEPA filter captured fine dust and pollutants. The UV bulb operated simultaneously to help
reduce harmful microorganisms present in the airflow.
The solar panel performance was also analysed under sunlight conditions to evaluate
its contribution to battery charging and system operation. Charging efficiency was monitored
during different sunlight intensities to study the effectiveness of solar energy utilization.
The collected data from different experiments were recorded and compared for
performance analysis. The observations helped in evaluating the effectiveness, reliability, and
energy efficiency of the solar-powered air purifier. The experimental results also helped
identify possible improvements in airflow design, filtration arrangement, and power
management for future development of the system.

CHAPTER 5
5.1 Summary
The main objective of this project was to design and develop a solar-powered air purifier
capable of reducing air pollution using renewable solar energy. The project focuses on
providing an eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and low-cost solution for improving air quality in
indoor and semi-outdoor environments. Increasing levels of air pollution, dust particles, smoke,
and harmful microorganisms create serious health problems, especially in urban and industrial
areas. Traditional air purifiers consume continuous electrical energy and increase power
consumption. Therefore, the concept of a solar-powered air purification system was developed
to provide clean air while utilizing renewable energy resources.
The development of the project started with a detailed study of air pollution problems
and existing air purification techniques. Different purification methods, filtration systems, and
solar-powered technologies were analysed before selecting suitable components for the system.
The project integrates mechanical, electrical, and filtration systems into a compact purifier
design. The overall structure was designed to provide proper airflow, portability, stability, and
easy installation of components.
The system consists of a 15W solar panel, solar charge controller, 6V rechargeable
battery, DC motor fan, HEPA filter, mesh filter, UV bulb, and supporting frame structure. The
solar panel converts sunlight into electrical energy and charges the battery through the charge
controller. The stored energy is then used to operate the purifier system. The DC fan creates
airflow and continuously pulls polluted air into the purification chamber.
The air purification process is carried out in multiple stages. First, the mesh filter
removes larger dust particles and suspended impurities from the incoming air. After preliminary
filtration, the air passes through the HEPA filter, which removes fine dust particles, smoke,
pollen, and other microscopic pollutants. A UV bulb is installed inside the purification chamber
to help reduce harmful microorganisms and improve air quality further. Finally, the purified air
is released back into the environment.
The frame and body structure of the purifier were fabricated using lightweight and
durable materials to support all components safely. Proper alignment, mounting, and insulation
46
were ensured during assembly to achieve safe and efficient operation. Electrical wiring and
power connections were carefully arranged to minimize power loss and improve system
reliability.
After fabrication, the system was tested under different environmental conditions to
evaluate its performance. The electrical components such as the solar panel, battery, charge
controller, fan motor, and UV bulb were checked individually before complete operation. The
airflow mechanism and filter arrangement were also tested to ensure proper circulation and
purification efficiency.
During experimentation, the purifier successfully operated using solar energy and
maintained stable airflow. The DC fan generated continuous air circulation, while the filtration
system effectively reduced dust and suspended particles from the surrounding air. The UV
purification system operated efficiently inside the chamber. The battery backup system also
provided continuous operation during low sunlight conditions.
Although the system performed effectively, certain limitations were identified during
testing. The purification efficiency depends on the quality and condition of the filters.
Continuous exposure to heavy pollution may reduce filter life and require regular maintenance
or replacement. The performance of the solar charging system also depends on sunlight
availability. Additionally, the compact design limits purification coverage for very large areas.
The solar-powered air purifier developed in this project provides a strong foundation for an
eco-friendly and energy-efficient air purification system. However, there is significant scope
47
for further improvement in terms of purification efficiency, automation, portability, monitoring,
and large-scale implementation. With advancements in renewable energy systems, smart
electronics, and modern filtration technologies, the system can be upgraded into a more
intelligent and highly efficient air purification solution.
One major area of future improvement is the integration of advanced sensor systems.
Air quality sensors can be installed to continuously monitor pollutants such as dust particles,
smoke, carbon dioxide, and harmful gases in the surrounding environment. These sensors can
automatically control the fan speed and purification level according to the air quality condition.
Temperature and humidity sensors can also be integrated to monitor environmental conditions
and improve overall system performance.
The project can be further enhanced by implementing automation and smart control
systems. A microcontroller-based intelligent control unit can be used to automatically manage
fan speed, UV operation, and power consumption. IoT (Internet of Things) technology can also
be integrated for real-time monitoring and remote control through mobile applications or web
platforms. This will allow users to monitor air quality, battery status, filter condition, and
purifier performance from any location.
The power supply system can be improved by using higher-capacity solar panels and
advanced rechargeable batteries for longer operation. The implementation of Maximum Power
Point Tracking (MPPT) solar charge controllers can increase solar energy utilization efficiency.
Energy management systems can also be incorporated to optimize battery charging, reduce
power loss, and extend operational backup time during low sunlight conditions.
Future versions of the project may include automatic filter cleaning or filter
replacement indicators to reduce maintenance effort. Noise reduction techniques can also be
implemented to make the purifier quieter and more comfortable for indoor use. Compact and
portable designs can be developed for household, office, industrial, and vehicle-based air
purification applications.
Overall, the future scope of the project is extensive. With continuous improvements in
solar technology, smart automation, and advanced filtration systems, the solar-powered air
purifier can become a highly efficient, sustainable, and intelligent solution for controlling air
pollution and improving public health.
1.3 Conclusions
The following conclusions were drawn based on the testing, observation, and evaluation of the
solar-powered air purifier developed in this project:
The developed system successfully achieved its primary objective of purifying polluted air
using renewable solar energy. The integration of mechanical, electrical, and filtration
components worked effectively to provide continuous air purification with low power
consumption. The project demonstrated that solar energy can be utilized efficiently for
operating small-scale environmental protection systems such as air purifiers.
The combination of the 15W solar panel, solar charge controller, and 6V rechargeable battery
provided sufficient electrical power for operating the purifier system. The solar panel
successfully converted sunlight into electrical energy and charged the battery efficiently under
normal sunlight conditions. The battery backup system ensured continuous operation during
low sunlight conditions, making the purifier reliable and energy efficient.
49
The airflow mechanism operated effectively through the DC motor-driven fan. The fan
generated proper air circulation and continuously pulled polluted air into the purification
chamber. The mesh filter successfully removed larger dust particles and suspended impurities,
while the HEPA filter effectively captured fine dust particles, smoke, pollen, and other
microscopic contaminants present in the air.
The ultraviolet (UV) purification section also functioned efficiently during testing. The UV
bulb helped reduce harmful microorganisms and improved the overall purification process. The
combined operation of mechanical filtration and UV sterilization enhanced the air purification
performance of the system.
The structural design and fabrication of the purifier were found to be stable, lightweight,
and suitable for practical applications. The frame supported all components securely and
maintained proper airflow inside the purifier chamber. Proper insulation and wiring
arrangements ensured safe electrical operation and minimized power loss during system
functioning.
During experimentation, the purifier maintained stable operation under different
environmental conditions. Multiple testing trials confirmed consistency in airflow, filtration
efficiency, battery operation, and solar charging performance. The purifier showed satisfactory
performance in reducing dust and airborne particles from the surrounding environment.
The project also proved that solar-powered systems can reduce dependency on conventional
electricity and contribute toward environmentally friendly technology. The use of renewable
solar energy makes the purifier economical, sustainable, and suitable for areas with limited
electricity availability.
Although the system performed effectively, certain limitations were identified during
testing. The purification efficiency depends on regular cleaning and replacement of filters.
Continuous operation in highly polluted environments may reduce filter life and require
frequent maintenance. The charging efficiency of the solar panel also depends on sunlight
intensity and weather conditions.
The purifier is more suitable for small to medium-sized indoor or semi-outdoor
environments. Large-scale purification areas may require higher-capacity fans, larger solar
panels, advanced batteries, and improved filtration systems. Additionally, long-duration
operation depends on battery backup capacity and solar energy availability.
Overall, the project successfully achieved its objective of developing a solar-powered air
purifier capable of reducing air pollution using renewable energy and efficient filtration
methods. The system demonstrates the practical application of solar technology, energy
50
management, and air purification techniques in creating an eco-friendly and low-cost
environmental solution. With further improvements and advanced technologies, the project can
be developed into a more efficient and large-scale air purification system for homes, offices,
industries, hospitals, and public spaces.
