CHARACTERISTICS OF TROPICAL CLIMATES
1. Temperature - Average mean temperature (dbt) 20-30 deg C
- Small diurnal temperature change/ range 2-5 deg C
2. Humidity Levels - 50% to 100% relative humidity
3. Wind Conditions - Slow wind flow
- Average of 2 m/s
- Prevailing winds:
- Amihan (NE)- November to April
- Habagat (SW)- May to October
4. Sky Conditions - Overcast sky most of the time
- A lot of reflected heat/ solar gain
5. Precipitation - high during the year- average of 1000mm/yr
6. Others: a. Climatic conditions breed insects (flies. Mosquitoes, termites)
b. Damp ground conditions
PROBLEMS IN AREAS WITH TROPICAL CLIMATE
1. HIGH TEMPERATURE LEVEL (HEAT)
- Due to direct solar radiation
- reflected solar radiation
- long wave radiation
- heat transfer (convection)
- others
2. HIGH HUMIDITY LEVELS
- Water content in the air and on the body does not evaporate as fast resulting in very low
comfort levels.
3. SLOW WIND VELOCITIES
– Obstacles decrease wind speed by:
– deflecting the wind around the object
(E.g. Buildings)
– letting only a portion of the wind through the object (e.g. Porous, Trees)
– Mountains, hills and plateaus
– Frictional Drag changes in wind direction
4. HIGH PRECIPITATION LEVELS DURING RAINY DAYS
- High incidence of typhoon

5. ABUNDANCE OF INSECTS AND RODENTS
6. DAMP GROUND CONDITIONS
INSTRUMENTS THAT MEASURES CLIMATIC ELEMENTS
1. CUP ANEMOMETER
- Measures wind velocity or speed
2. KATA THERMOMETER
- measure low airspeeds, below about 5 miles (8
km) per hour in studies of air circulation
3. PITOT TUBE
- indicate fluid flow velocity by measuring the
difference between the static and dynamic
pressures in fluids
4. GLOBE THERMOMETER
- measure radiant heat
5. PORTABLE AIR METER
- measure air velocity and air pressure
IMPORTANCE OF CLIMATIC DESIGN
- The key objectives of climatic design include
To reduce energy cost of a building
To use “natural energy” instead of mechanical system or power
To provide comfortable and healthy environment for people
