Today’s global economy features unprecedented interconnectedness. As a result, any
business with ambitions to tap into new global markets must leverage opportunities that align its
brand’s identity with the prevailing customer needs (Gamble et al., 2023). Lululemon Athletica
is an athletic apparel company that exemplifies this growth model. Its capacity to leverage
growth opportunities has cemented its strong presence in new markets such as Canada and
China. Founded in 1998, the company only focused on women’s yoga wear, an extremely unique
position in the global market (CNBC, 2022). Over the years, the company has diversified its
product catalogue; it now fields products for Women's Yoga wear, Men's active wear, Lifestyle
apparel, and Footwear & wellness (Gamble et al., 2023). Its long-term strategy puts emphasis on
customer satisfaction and international expansion, pillars that have pushed its brand’s growth
into new markets (CNBC, 2022). Since expansion is embedded deep within the company’s long-
term strategy, this paper argues that India is the next most strategic market that Lululemon
should pursue in its next five-year expansion.
India’s market has a high potential for activewear growth given its population
demographics and lifestyle market trends. It has an entire population of over 1.4 billion people,
where 50% of them fall under the age of 30 (Kumar, 2023; Srivastava, 2024). This population
subset consists of the youthful ones who are more likely to invest in the trend-driven wear
fielded by Lululemon. Additionally, India’s middle class is not only growing in numbers but also
increasing its spending power due to the increasing income levels (Kumar, 2023). These
population and financial characteristics perfectly align with Lululemon’s athleisure segment, one
that blends casual fashion style with athletic wear. This segment has a bright future given its
growth dominance during the pandemic period and projected growth of 5.8% annually up to
2028 (CNBC, 2022). Coupled with under-penetration by other wear brands, India’s market offers
long-term assurance. The market also offers a first mover advantage for Lululemon to establish
its brand dominance. Therefore, India’s population scale, lifestyle trends, and economic shifts
justify why Lululemon should expand into India.
India offers an unparalleled cultural alignment, as it is the birthplace of Yoga. The
founding of Lululemon was anchored on Yoga; its initial apparel only targeted women practicing
Yoga. As a result, this alignment provides a unique opportunity where Lululemon’s brand story
3
can be integrated with the Indian Yoga culture to foster a permanent emotional and cultural
resonance with the Indian population (CNBC, 2022). This opportunity allows Lululemon not to
be viewed as a foreign brand imposing a westernized fashion, but rather as one that honors and
celebrates Indian tradition and culture. The resultant cultural synergy is unique to Lululemon, as
replicating it with the same degree of authenticity is extremely difficult for other premium active
brands. The same is supported by Gamble et al. (2023), as it acts as a perfect example of the
transnational strategy, where Lululemon seeks international expansion while leveraging unique
local opportunities to achieve dominance. Hence, Lululemon should seize this unique
opportunity and expand its presence into the Indian market.
India’s population not only features digital readiness but also an e-commerce acceptance
trend. The number of India’s internet users is set to soar past 900 million users in 2025, which is
a huge population subset and target market for Lululemon’s digital infrastructure. The company
has continually improved its online apparel retail capacity. As of 2022, the company had 42% of
its sales coming from e-commerce platforms (CNBC, 2022). As a result, Lululemon has the
necessary capacity and know-how to establish a strong online retail presence in India.
Additionally, India has been experiencing an explosion of fashion-specific ecommerce platforms
such as Myntra and Nykaa, further cementing why Lululemon should expand digitally into India
(Assomull, 2024). The Indian population also features heavy social media usage; the average
time spent on social media was approximately 2 hours and 28 minutes on a daily basis (Saurabh,
2025). Instagram alone was utilized by 77% of the entire Indian internet users (Saurabh, 2025).
These statistics provide a unique low-risk entry opportunity. Lululemon could start by creating
awareness and advertising itself using Instagram and other popular social media platforms, and
later on, invest in expensive physical stores. Therefore, Lululemon should expand into India as
its large internet user base provides a low-risk opportunity for exploiting via its digital
infrastructure.
In conclusion, this paper sought to prove that India is the most strategic market that
Lululemon should pursue in its next five-year expansion. It has achieved this by analyzing the
population demographics of India, where the youthful and middle class provide a potential target
market. It has also supported the expansion by aligning Lululemon’s brand origin with India’s
Yoga culture. Lastly, the huge number of online users coupled with ecommerce acceptance
allows Lululemon to expand into India via its digital retail infrastructure.
