Course Description

This course deals with the nature and identity, as well as the factors and forces that affect the
development and the maintenance of personal identity. It is intended to facilitate the exploration of
the issue and concern regarding self and identity to arrive at a better understanding of oneself. It
strives to integrate the personal with the academic-contextualizing matters discussed in the
classroom and in the everyday experiences of students for better learning; generating a new
appreciation for the learning process and developing a more critical and reflective attitude while
enabling them to manage and improve their selves to attain a better quality of life.

Course Learning Outcomes

CO1. Discuss the different representations, conceptualizations, forces, and institutions that impact
the development of various disciplinal perspectives of the self and identity;
CO2. Compare and contrast how the self has been represented across different disciplines and
perspectives; & examine one’s self against the different aspects of self-discussed in the class;
CO3. Demonstrate critical & reflective thought in analyzing the development of one’s self & identity;
CO4. Understand the theoretical underpinnings of how to manage & care for different aspects of self;
CO5. Acquire, hone new skills and learning, and apply these skills for better management of one’s
self and behaviors.

MODULE 1: COURSE INTRODUCTION


Topic 1 & 2: Learning the Essentials: Understanding the Self x Blended Learning

LO1: Develop rapport among students and create a safety learning environment.
LO2: Know the expectations of the instructor and grading system to be used.
LO3: Understand the course requirements and explain the significance of the course in one’s chosen
field and the use of blended learning.

MODULE 2: THE SELF FROM VARIOUS PERSPECTIVES

Topic 3: Philosophical Perspectives


LO1: Examine and discuss the various philosophical perspectives of the self.
LO2: Compare and contrast how the self has been represented across different philosophical
perspectives.
LO3: Demonstrate critical and reflective thought in analyzing the development of self from a
philosophical perspective.

Topic 4: Socio-Anthropological Perspectives


LO1: Discuss the self from various sociological perspectives.
LO2: Examine how the self is shaped by society and culture.
LO3: Demonstrate critical and reflective thought in analyzing the development of self from the
sociological perspectives.

Topic 5: Psychological Perspectives


LO1: Examine the various psychological perspectives of the self.
LO2: Compare and contrast the different psychological views of self.
LO3: Demonstrate critical and reflective thought in analyzing the development of self from the
psychological perspectives.
MODULE 3: UNPACKING THE SELF

Topic 6: The Physical and Material Self


LO1: Explore the basic concept of the physical and the material self.
LO2: Gain understanding of the association of self and possessions.
LO3: Discover what one holds important.

Topic 7: The Sexual Self


LO1: Demonstrate critical, reflective thought in integrating the various aspects of self and identity.
LO2: Identify the different forces and institutions that impact the development of sexual self &
identity.

Topic 8: The Spiritual Self


LO1: Discuss the meaning of the spiritual self.
LO2: Identify the different religious beliefs and practices.
LO3: Discover the ways in finding meaning of life.

Topic 9: The Political Self


LO1: Explore the concept of political self in the Philippine context.
LO2: Gain understanding about who is the Filipino and what makes a Filipino.
LO3: Identify and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Filipino character.

Topic 10: The Digital Self


LO1: Recognize the relationship between technology and the formation of digital self.
LO2: Examine how technology is impacting and defining one’s self and relationship with others.

MODULE 4: MANAGING AND CARING FOR THE SELF

Topic 11: Learning to Become a Better Student and Setting Goals for Success
LO1: Acquire and hone new skills and learning.
LO2: Identify and describe ways for better managing one’s self and behaviors.
LO3: Apply these new skills to oneself and functioning for a better quality of life.
LO4: Examine short and long term as well as plans for accomplishing these.
LO5: Clarify goals and set-up a plan for the short term (for the summer) goals.

Topic 12: Taking Charge of One’s Health


LO1: Understand the theoretical underpinnings for how to manage and care for different aspects of
the self.
LO2: Equip students with necessary coping strategies to deal with challenges in life.

B. Summative Assessment (Prelim, Midterm, Prefinal, and Final Exam)

GRADING SYSTEM

MIDTERM GRADE = CS1 (40%) + PT (20%) + ME (25%) + P.E (15%)


FINAL GRADE = MA (40%) + CS2 (20%) + [Link] (10%) + FE (20%) + PF. E (10%)

NOTE: Grade transmutation is based on 50% passing score
