Efficiency Worksheet
A. A cyclist is using their store of chemical potential energy to increase their store of kinetic energy. If the cyclist transfers 20J of
energy and only 15J of energy is transferred into their kinetic energy store, calculate the efficiency of the cyclist.
→ Efficiency = (15 / 20) × 100 = 75%
B. How much energy is transferred to wasted stores?
→5J
C. What stores will this energy be transferred into?
→ Thermal energy (heat) and sound energy.
The prep room kettle is only 80% efficient. If it is provided with 3,000J calculate the amount of energy the kettle will transfer into the
heat store of the water.
→ Useful energy output = 0.8 × 3000 = 2400 J
A. A car burns fuel to increase its speed. What are the input, useful output and wasted output energy stores for the car?
→ Input: Chemical potential energy (fuel)
→ Useful output: Kinetic energy
→ Wasted output: Thermal and sound energy
B. If the car’s engine is 35% efficient and it produces 500J of useful output energy, calculate how much energy must have been
supplied.
→ Energy supplied = 500 / 0.35 = 1428.6 J (≈1429 J)
C. The car has a mass of 1,200kg. Calculate the speed of the car.
→ v = √(2E/m) = √(2×500 / 1200) = 0.91 m/s
A coal power station generates electricity by first burning coal to heat water into steam, then passing that steam through a turbine
to make it spin. The turbine drives a generator which gives out electrical energy.
Read the paragraph above. Identify the energy stores and transfers for the coal power station.
→ Chemical → Thermal → Kinetic → Electrical
→ Some energy lost as heat and friction.
The coal has a chemical potential energy store of 20,000J. 90% of the energy is transferred into the heat store of the water. Then,
30% of the energy is dissipated in the turbine. Of the remaining energy, 85% is transferred as electricity by the generator. Calculate
how much electrical energy is produced by the generator.
→ 20,000 × 0.9 × 0.7 × 0.85 = 10,710 J
If the power station is provided with 10,000J of energy per second from the coal, calculate the power output of the power station.
→ Efficiency = 10,710 / 20,000 = 53.55%
→ Power output = 10,000 × 0.5355 = 5,355 W
Give three specific improvements that could be made to the power station to make it more efficient:
1. Improve insulation to reduce heat loss.
2. Use more efficient turbines.
3. Reuse waste heat in a combined heat and power system.
