DIFFERENT INPUT &
OUTPUT DEVICES OF
COMPUTER SYSTEM
INPUT DEVICES
Input devices receive the command or
instructions of the users and sends it to the CPU.
Functions of Input Devices:-
i. Receive command or instructions from the users.
ii. Convert it into the machine language.
iii. Send it to the Main memory of the computer system.
iv. Input devices acts like an interface between human
and the computer.
Various Types of Input Devices
KEYBOARD
A keyboard is an input device used in a computer to
enter data, text, and commands. It looks similar to a
typewriter and allows you to communicate with the
computer by pressing keys.
Types of Keys:-
i. Alphanumeric Keys:- A to Z and 0 to 9
ii. Functional Keys:- F1 to F12
iii. Navigation Keys:- Arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up,
Page Down
iv. Control Keys:- Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Esc.
v. Special Keys:- Enter, Spacebar, Backspace, Delete, Tab,
Caps Lock.
Function of Different Keys
MOUSE
A mouse is an input device used to control the
movement of the cursor (pointer) on a computer
screen. It helps you interact with the computer easily
by pointing, clicking, and selecting items.
Types of Mouse:-
i. Mechanical or Ball Mouse
ii. Optical Mouse or LED Mouse
iii. Wireless or Remote Mouse
iv. Trackball Mouse

BALL MOUSE OPTICAL MOUSE
WIRELESS MOUSE TRACKBALL MOUSE
SCANNER
• A scanner is an input device that captures
information and converts it into a digital form.
• When the document is scanned the laser beam from
the lamp inside the device scans the document and
sends it as a light signal to the CPU and the image of
the document is reflected on the monitor screen.
FLATBED SCANNER HANDHELD SCANNER DRUM SCANNER
JOYSTICK
• A joystick is an input device used to control
movement in a computer, video game, or
machine. It usually consists of a stick that
pivots on a base—when you move the stick in
different directions, it sends signals to control
something on a screen or in real life.
• Use:- Video games,Aircraft controls etc.
OMR
• Full form of OMR is Optical Mark Recognition
• It is a kind of input device with the help of which
any mark on a sheet of paper can be identified.
• Based on detecting the presence
or absence of reflected light
from marked areas on paper.
• An OMR scanner can process
1,000 to 10,000 sheets per hour,
depending on the machine.
• Use:- Different Examination.
OCR
• Full form of OCR is Optical Character Recognition
• It is a kind of input device with the help of which
converts images of text—like scanned
documents, photos, or screenshots—into
machine-readable text you can edit, search, or
store.
• ICR (Intelligent Character Recognition)
It is an advanced, AI-powered form of OCR
• Use:- Document Digitization, Data Entry
Automation, ID & License Recognition,Translation
Apps
MICR
• Full form of MICR is Magnetic Ink Character Recognition
• The Magnetic Ink Character Reader or MICR is a kind of
device with which any information written in magnetic ink
can be detected or identified.
• Every bank has its own MICR code. Generally, out of the 9
digit MICR code, the first three numbers are the city codes,
the following three numbers stand for the respective banks
and the last three numbers are used for the branch.
• Use:- Cheque Processing, Banking Automation, Fraud
Detection & Security etc.

OUTPUT DEVICES
An output device is a piece of computer hardware
that receives processed data from a computer and
converts it into a human-understandable form.
Functions of Output Devices:-
i. It helps in the display of the result following the
processing of the data in the computer system. .
ii. Convert it into the human understandable form.
iii. Output devices acts like an interface between
coputer and the human.
Various Types of Output Devices
MONITOR
• The Monitor is the most important output devices of all
in the computer system.
• This device, a television lookalike, helps in the display of
any information after due processing by the computer
system..
• the Monitor is called the Visual Display Unit or VDU.
• At present in the operating system with Graphical User
Interface (GUI) the role of the Monitor is very important.
TYPE OF MONITOR
• CRT Monitor.
• LCD Monitor
• LED Monitor
• Plasma Monitor
CRT MONITOR
• CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube Monitor.
• Bigger in size.
• Heavier than LCD or LED monitor.
• Consumes more electricity.
• Inside the vacuum tube of this type
of Monitor there are one or more electron guns and
phosphorescent screen in which the image or the
picture is displayed.
LCD MONITOR
• LCD Monitor is Liquid Crystal Display Monitor.
• Smaller in size.
• Light weighted than CRT monitor.
• Consumes less electricity.
• Good image quality.
• Available in many sizes
(from ~18" to 40"+)
LED MONITOR
• LED Monitor is Light Emitting Diode Monitor.
• LED have wider viewing angle than the LCD.
• Smaller in size.
• Light weighted than CRT monitor.
• Consumes less electricity.
• Good image quality.
• Available in many sizes
(from ~18" to 40"+)
PLASMA MONITOR
• PDP stands for Plasma Display Panel
• The screen has millions of tiny cells filled with gas.
• When electricity passes through, the gas turns into plasma
• This plasma emits UV light, which then creates visible
colors.
• Consumes more power.
• Good image quality.
PRINTER
A printer is a device that produces a physical (hard copy) of
digital documents or images from a computer, phone, or
other device.
IMPACT PRINTER
The type of printer in which the head of the printer touches
the paper and exerts pressure while printing the output is
known as the Impact Printer.
Characteristics:-
i . In the time of printing head of the printer touches the paper.
ii . This type of printer produces sound caused by the friction.
iii . The quality of the printout is not very high.
iv . The speed of printing is very slow.
v . The color printout cannot be taken with this printer.
vi . The cost of printing is comparatively less
Example:- dot-matrix printers, daisy-wheel printers, and line printers.

LINE PRINTER
DOT MATRIX PRINTER
NON IMPACT PRINTER
The kind of printer the printing head of which does not
touch the paper while printing is called Non-Impact Printer..
Characteristics:-
i . The printing head does not touch the paper while printing and hence no
friction related sound is produced.
ii . The quality of printing obtained from this type of Printer is very high
iii . The printing speed of the Non-Impact Printer is comparatively high.
iv . Any color picture or image or document can be printed.
v . The cost of printing in the Non-Impact Printer is comparatively high.
Example:- Laser Printer, Ink-Jet Printer.

PLOTTER
A plotter is a special type of printer used to produce large,
high-precision drawings, especially for engineering,
architecture, and design work.
Type of Plotter:-
i. Drum Plotter
ii. Flatbed Plotter
iii. Inkjet Plotter
iv. Cutting Plotter
SPEAKER
The Sound Box or Speaker is used as an accessory to the computer
system for the purpose of listening to the song, watching films, playing
games etc.
a. Internal Speaker: Such type of Speaker exists
inside the computer system (in the Motherboard).
But they are much smaller in size. For the purpose
of producing various notification sounds this type
sound box is used.
b. External Speaker: This type of speaker is located
outside the computer system (Cabinet) and they
are bigger in size. It is fitted with a volume knob to
increase or decrease the volume.
