Reported speech
Usage : Reported statements, also known as indirect speech, are a way of
repeating what someone said without using their exact words, using a reporting
verb like “said” or “told” and often changing the pronoun and verb tenses.
The statement is introduced by a reporting verb, such as “said”, “told”, or
“shouted”.

Note
Pronouns : In reported speech, you often have to change the
pronoun depending on who says what.
Example : She said, “My mum doesn’t have time today.”
– She said that her mum didn’t have time that day.

Tenses :
Backshift
You must change the tense if the introductory clause is in Simple Past (e. g. He
said). This is called backshift.
He said, “I am happy.” He said (that ) he was happy.
Fact sentences:
We don’t change the verb backward to the past.
“The Earth spins around the sun.”, he said.
He said that the Earth spins around the sun.

No Backshift:
Don’t change the tense if the introductory clause is in Present simple
(e.g. He says/ tells ).
He says, “I speak English.” He says that he speaks English.

We should follow these rules to change to a reported speech:

1) Cross the quotations & the comma and put (that). ( optional )
2) Change the pronouns.
3) Change some time expressions. ( adverbs )
4) Change the verbs backwards in tense. ( Change the verb tense to the past ).

Chapter 10
The next day, the news of Nancy’s murder was in all the newspapers, and
everyone in London wanted the murderer caught. Rose and Mr Brownlow felt
very sad and wanted to help Oliver.
Mr Brownlow said he had spoken to Mr Bumble and knew about the locket and
ring. Monks had to choose: share the money with Oliver or the police would be
told everything. Monks was afraid because the police were arresting the gang, so
he signed the papers and left.
Dr Losberne and Harry Maylie brought Monks to Mr Brownlow’s house. Monks
was angry, but Mr Brownlow told him he knew his real name, his past, and the
truth about Oliver’s mother and father. He said Oliver was Monks’s half‑brother
and had the right to his father’s money.
Later, the police hunted Bill Sikes. He ran to hide, but people recognized him and
shouted “Murderer!” When the police came, Bill tried to escape over the roof
with a rope. Suddenly he thought he saw Nancy’s eyes, lost his balance, and fell.
The rope tightened, and Bill Sikes was dead.
