Unit: 1 (Simple stress and Strain)
1. Define the term stress and discuss different type of stresses with neat diagram.
2. Distinguish between nominal stress and true stress.
3. Define the term strain and discuss different type of strains.
4. Draw a typical stress and strain curve for mild steel and define all the salient points.
5. Define Hooke’s law.
6. Define St. Venant’s principle.
7. A tapering rod has diameter d1 at one end and it tapers uniformly to a diameter d2 at the
other end, length being L. Find the expression for change in length when axial force P
acts on it.
8. A bar of uniform cross-section A and length L is suspended from top. Find the expression
for extension of the bar due to self weight only.
9. 12. Define the terms Poisson's Ratio and Volumetric Strain.
10. Define the terms Modulus of Rigidity and Bulk Modulus. Determine their relations with
Young's modulus.
11. A 5 metre long steel bar that is 25 cm in diameter is stretched 2.0 mm by a load of 80 kN
in pulling it axially. Calculate the stress, strain and the modulus of elasticity of the bar.

13. A steel bar, 100 mm X 12 mm in cross-section, and 3 m long is subjected to an axial pull
of 30 kN. How much will it increase in length if the modulus of elasticity of the steel is

14. A 400 metre long uniform steel rope is hung vertically. Find the elongation the top 150
metre length of the rope due to self-weight. Weight density of steel 78 kN/m², E = 210
GN/m2. (1.83 cm)
15. Find the change in length of a steel bar subjected to the forces as shown in Fig. Take
E=200 GN/m2 and area of cross-section of bar = 10 cm².

16. A 140 cm long steel bar is acted upon by forces as shown in Fig. Determine the total
elongation of the bar and stresses in each segment. Take E = 200 GPa.

17. A hollow cylinder of 25.0 cm external diameter, 12.5 cm internal diameter and having a
length of 50 cm is subjected to an axial load which causes an average stress of 840 MN/m². The
modulus of elasticity of the material is 200 GPa. Poisson's ratio for the material is 0.25.
Determine:
(a) change in linear dimensions,
(b) change in internal volume

18. Calculate the change in volume of a 10 cm diameter solid steel sphere when it is immersed
to a depth of 1000 metres in sea water. Unit weight of sea water is 0.01025 N/cm3 The modulus
of elasticity and the rigidity modulus of steel are 200 GPa and 80 GPa respecctively.

19. A steel bar of 3 cmX5 cm cross-section, 30 cm long is subjected to an axial pull of 200 kN.
Take E=200 GPa and Poisson's ratio as 0.3. Calculate the alterations in length and sides of the
bar, the volumetric strain and the change in volume.

20. A steel tube 75 cm long, 2.5 cm external diameter and 2 cm internal diameter encloses a
copper rod of the same length and 1.5 cm in diameter. The tube is firmly joined to the rod at both
ends and its temperature is raided by 120°C. Calculate the stresses in steel and copper. Find the
increase in length of this composite and the external force required to prevent this increase in
