SCIENCE CLASS: FLOWER DISSECTION
LAB
Objectives:
1. Identify the reproductive parts of a flower.
2. Describe the function of each part (stamen, pistil, sepals, petals).
3. Understand the process of pollination and fertilization.
Materials:
• A large flower (Hibiscus/Papo or Lily recommended)
• Tweezers or small scissors
• Magnifying glass
• Clear tape
• Paper/Journal
Procedure:
Step 1: External Observation. Identify the sepals (outer green leaves) and petals.
Step 2: Remove the sepals and petals carefully using tweezers.
Step 3: Identify the Stamen (Male part). Look for the filament and the anther (pollen
part).
Step 4: Identify the Pistil (Female part). Locate the Stigma (top), Style (tube), and Ovary
(base).
Step 5: Carefully cut the ovary in half to see the ovules inside.
Data Table: Flower Parts Identification
Part Name Description / Color Function
Sepal Protect the flower bud
Petal Attract pollinators
Anther Produces pollen
Stigma Receives pollen (sticky)
Ovary Contains ovules (becomes
fruit)
SCIENCE CLASS: FLOWER BIOLOGY &
REPRODUCTION
Part A: Labeling the Diagram
Based on your dissection, label the following parts in your drawing:
A. Anther B. Filament C. Stigma D. Style E. Ovary F. Petal
Part B: Analysis Questions
Q: What is the difference between a 'perfect' and 'imperfect' flower?
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: How does the structure of the stigma help it catch pollen?
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Describe the path of a pollen grain from the anther to the ovule.
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why are some flowers very colorful while others are plain/green?
------------------------------------------------------------
Part C: Vocabulary Match
Match the term with its definition:
1. Pollination ( ) a) The transfer of pollen to the stigma.
2. Fertilization ( ) b) When sperm and egg join in the ovule.
3. Germination ( ) c) The process of a seed starting to grow.
