2 Step Function Machine Worksheets

The document introduces function machines that perform mathematical operations on input numbers to produce output numbers. It provides examples and exercises for users to practice both input-to-output and output-to-input transformations using specified operations. Additionally, it encourages users to create their own function machines for further exploration.

Function Machines

WALT: use function machines to solve problems

The function machines below tell us what to do with a number once it enters the machine.

Look at this example:

IN x2 +4 OUT
When you put the number into the machine it would multiply by 2 then add
4 to give you a number which comes out the other side.

e.g. 2 IN -> 2 x 2 = 4 -> 4 + 4 = 8 -> 8 OUT

Try using the function machine above to find the OUT number if these
Q1 numbers were put IN...

1) 3 in = ____ out 4) 10 in = ____ out

2) 1 in = ____ out 5) 4 in = ____ out
3) 5 in = ____ out 6) 0 in = ____ out

Q2 Find the IN number if these numbers were put OUT (remember to work
backwards...

1) 8 out = ____ in 4) 26 out = ____ in

2) 18 out = ____ in 5) 14 out = ____ in
3) 10 out = ____ in 6) 22 out = ____ in

Now try this...

Make your own function machine and use counters to find the answer. Try
using a variety of numbers to challenge yourself.
