COMMUNITY

Introduction
A community is a social group of individuals who share common values, customs, traditions, and
interests. It provides a sense of belonging, identity, and security to its members. Communities are
essential for social interaction, cooperation, and development. They can be formed based on
geography, culture, occupation, or shared interests.

Definition
A community is defined as a group of people living together in a particular geographical area or
connected through shared values, beliefs, and social relationships. It fosters cooperation, mutual
assistance, and cultural preservation. Communities can be classified into different types based on
their characteristics and functions.

Types of Communities
1. Rural Community
- Meaning: A rural community refers to a settlement located in the countryside, where agriculture
and related activities are the primary means of livelihood. Such communities are usually small, with
a closely-knit social structure and a slower pace of life.
- Characteristics:
- Low Population Density: Rural areas have fewer people spread over a large area, leading to
open spaces and natural surroundings.
- Agriculture-Based Economy: Most people in rural communities depend on farming, fishing, and
cottage industries for their livelihood.
- Strong Social Bonds: Relationships in rural communities are personal, with close family and
neighborhood ties.
- Traditional Lifestyle: Rural areas maintain customs, traditions, and cultural practices over
generations.
- Limited Infrastructure: Rural areas often lack advanced healthcare, educational institutions, and
modern amenities.

2. Urban Community
- Meaning: An urban community consists of people living in cities and towns with advanced
infrastructure, modern facilities, and a fast-paced lifestyle. These communities are characterized by
diversity in occupations, cultures, and social interactions.
- Characteristics:
- High Population Density: Urban areas have a large number of people living in a relatively small
space, leading to skyscrapers and densely packed neighborhoods.
- Industrial and Service-Based Economy: Employment is diverse, including business, IT,
corporate jobs, and manufacturing industries.
- Formal Social Interactions: Unlike rural communities, relationships in urban settings are often
professional and less personal.
- Well-Developed Infrastructure: Cities have modern facilities such as hospitals, schools,
transportation, and entertainment centers.
- Modern and Progressive Outlook: Urban communities embrace innovation, education, and
social change more rapidly.

3. Tribal Community
- Meaning: A tribal community consists of indigenous people who live in isolated regions and have
distinct cultural, linguistic, and social traditions. These communities often rely on nature for their
survival and maintain a unique way of life.
- Characteristics:
- Unique Cultural and Social Customs: Tribes follow their traditional customs, religious practices,
and social norms.
- Dependence on Nature: Hunting, gathering, and handicrafts form the basis of their economy.
- Simple Lifestyle: Tribal communities live in harmony with nature and have minimal dependence
on modern technology.
- Strong Kinship Ties: Family and clan relationships play a crucial role in tribal societies.
- Limited Access to Modern Facilities: Many tribal areas lack proper healthcare, education, and
transportation.
