Introduction
Young people now use Instagram and WhatsApp and TikTok as their daily social media
platforms which serve both entertainment purposes and essential social communication and self-
expression needs. The digital platforms have transformed how young people exchange messages
and exchange thoughts and maintain their social bonds. Social media platforms enable users to
establish new connections through their platforms yet they create problems that affect their
ability to communicate face-to-face and resolve conflicts and show empathy.
Research findings about social media effects on young people present multiple conflicting
viewpoints. Sumadevi (2022) conducts an extensive study of social media impact on teenagers
which demonstrates these platforms create both positive and negative effects on their social
abilities (Sumadevi, 2022). The authors Payasi and Jain (2025) demonstrate that excessive social
network usage leads to deteriorating personal relationships because people substitute deep face-
to-face interactions with superficial online contacts (Payasi & Jain, 2025). The authors Mehta et
al. (2024) identify three major social media risks which include rising social anxiety and shorter
attention periods and reduced genuine self-expression (Mehta et al., 2024). Chen (2025)
demonstrates that students who use social media with purposeful intent will develop better
teamwork abilities and stronger peer support networks (Chen, 2025). The research findings
demonstrate that social media usage produces both positive and negative effects which affect the
social development of young people.
The research examines social media impacts on youth communication skills through an analysis
of its effects. The study evaluates social media benefits and drawbacks through its assessment of
social connections and mental wellness and its creation of strategies to achieve positive
outcomes while reducing adverse effects.

Methods (Procedure)
The respondents of my research were 36 males and females from Nizwa College of Technology.
The number of participants was 15 males and 16 females. The group was selected from the college
because it was very easy to communicate with them, and to save time. This project (The effect of
social media on communication for youth) .
I collected this information for this report from the websites on the internet. The internet has a lot
of information from different resources. However, it is a very fast way to get information by phone
or computer.
A questionnaire was used for this research containing ten questions related to the report. The
questionnaire had four Yes/No, four Multiple Choice and two Open-Ended questions. We gave
the participants the questionnaire to fill out in the break. We faced only one problem that some of
the participants did not answer the open-ended questions.
At the end, we collected all the questionnaire papers and compared the results. In addition, we
organized them in tables and transformed them to percentages. The results are down in bar graphs
and pie charts.

Analysis and Findings
Figure1: Do you think social media has made it easier for you
to communicate with others?
3%
97%
yes no
The survey results demonstrate that 97% of participants agreed social media makes
communication easier while 3% disagreed. Young people heavily depend on WhatsApp and
Instagram to maintain friendships and express their thoughts according to the survey results. The
small group of people who chose "No" might prefer direct face-to-face contact or struggle with
using these platforms effectively which shows social media improves communication but some
people still prefer personal interactions.

2. Do you believe social media has helped you learn 26 9 35
new ways of interacting or communicating?
26%
74%
yes no
The pie chart shows that 74% of participants agreed social media helps them discover innovative
communication methods but 26% disagreed with this statement. Social media platforms enable
young people to learn digital communication methods and adjust their interaction techniques.
The 26% who selected "No" might choose face-to-face communication methods or they might
not use social media platforms to improve their communication abilities. The research findings
demonstrate that social media serves as a primary tool for interactive skill development for most
users.

3. Do you think social media helps you stay updated 30 5 35
on communication trends and modern language use?
14%
86%
yes no
According to the pie chart, a great majority of participants (86%) felt that social media is helpful
for keeping updated about communication aspects and ways of contemporary language use, it
was however disagreed by around 14% of them. It is possible that social media sites inform
young people about changing communication practices, colloquialisms and online fashions, as
users are constantly exposed to new communication periods in their social life. The smaller “No”
group may not engage with social media trends or place more value on traditional modes of
communication. Taken together, the evidence suggest that social media serves as a significant
tool for keeping a large number of young individuals informed about modern communication
practices.

Questions yes no total
4. Do you think social media has weakened the 26 9 35
grammar or writing skills of youth?
43%
57%
yes no
As depicted in the pie chart, a little over 57% of the respondents believe that social media
negatively impacts the grammar and writing skills of youth, while 43% of respondents hold the
opposing view. This indicates that social media also poses the risk of negatively impacting some
young people's skills in formal writing, despite the fact that social media has a number of
positive uses with regards to communication. This risk is presented to young people in the form
of frequently used abbreviations, shortcuts, and non-standard language structures. The 43% who
responded “No” may have strong grammar abilities even when participating in social media or
could be less influenced by online language trends. Overall, the data shows that social media has
a variety of effects on young people's writing and grammar abilities.

Based on the pie chart pulled together, the vast majority of people think social media allows
young people to formulate and express their opinions. 63% of people thought so, 14% agreed to
that thought emphatically, 23% were on the fence, and there were no dissenting voices. Thus,
social media sites do, in fact, allow young people to express their voices and enhance their
interpersonal communication skills. Even though the people in the neutral position think the
social media impact on young people's self-expression isn't that great, the data demonstrates the
overall social media assists in the increased ability of young people to express their thoughts in
written form.

The pie chart displays various viewpoints regarding whether young people's dependence on text
messaging diminishes their capacity for formal communication. 28% agreed, 31% disagreed, 6%
disagreed or strongly disagreed, and 29% were neutral. strongly agreed. This suggests that there
is a considerable proportion of young adults that may be affected by casual usage of digital
communication and that may be detrimental to their ability to communicate so formally. While
the small percentage of people who disagreed may have strong formal communication skills
despite frequently using brief messages, the neutral category represents uncertainty. Overall, the
data shows differing opinions about how social media affects formal communication skills.

The participants' views on the degree to which online services foster friendships and social
network interactions are illustrated in the pie chart. 20% and 3% of the participants disagreed and
strongly disagreed, respectively, while 34% of the respondents agreed, 20% of the participants
strongly agreed, and 23% of the participants remained neutral. This suggests that while a
significant number of participants appreciate the role of social media in the creation and
maintenance of friendships, a significant number of participants continue to question the efficacy
of social media, possibly due to a stronger preference for face-to-face interactions or challenges
in creating relationships online. All in all, the data suggests that social media positively impacts
social relationships in a conflicting way.

Respondents' views on the use of social media and its affect on the communication of young
people is illustrated in the pie chart. The data illustrate that 20% (17% + 3%) disagreed or
strongly disagreed, whereas 46% agreed and 11% strongly agreed, and 23% had a neutral stance.
This suggests that a majority of youth perceive a decline in in-person communication because of
social media, and rest either do not think so, or do not know. The data suggests that social media
has a range of impacts on the capacity for interpersonal communication.
12
Part3: Open- Ended Questions:
The social sphere has expanded greatly due to social media where communicating and staying in
touch with family and friends has become effortless and instantaneous. Meanwhile, the ability to
share and receive text messages, make phone calls, and send photos and videos essentially keeps
individuals connected at all times. Reports also state that individuals can also join and interact
with online communities that share the same interests, practice and experience foreign languages,
and alleviate the issues that stem from face-to-face meetings. Overall, social media is a valuable
resource that enables and facilitates the communication and connection of young adults, aiding in
releative and social maintetainance.
What feedback tells us is what young people most value when they communicate via social
media. Both speed and ease of communication, the ability to stay in touch with friends and
family, and the variety of platforms — from Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok — were
mentioned by many. According to the respondents, social media enhances 'socialisation' and
individuality through sharing experiences and images/videos. Taken together, the figures show
that young adults appreciate social media as it is efficient, broad-reaching and supports
relationship maintenance.
13
Conclusion
In conclusion, the purpose of this research is to explore the impact of social media on
communication skills in young people. The results showed that the majority of students find
participants that are affected by Social Media believe they make communication easier, enable
them to meet new ways of interaction enable them to be aware about trend and modern language
allow expressing their ideas more actively. However, some younger users said social media
could harm writing and grammar or diminish the quality of in-person conversation. These
findings indicate to the dual effects of social networking: it increases connective, self-discursive
and interactive skills however is also probable increases informality of language and negative
face-to-face communication behaviors. The results stress the importance of combining on- and
offline life when regarding cooperation with social media to obtain preventive potential. The
results may offer important implications for educators, parents and policymakers in promoting
healthy digital practices to youth by shedding light onto the role of social media in youth
communication.
14
Recommendations
Omani young people need to limit their daily use of social networking
sites and to increase face-to-face meetings in order to reduce reliance on
digital commodities.
Teenagers need to take a break from social media every now and then if
they want to maintain their sanity and remember that face-to-face
communication is important.”

Appendix B: Project Activity
Title: The Role of Social Media in Shaping the Identity of Omani Youth
Social media plays an essential role in shaping the personality of today’s youth, and Oman is
no exception. It influences how young people communicate, think critically, build networks, and
develop their lifestyles. Platforms filled with influencers, posts, advertisements, and hidden
agendas strongly affect the way young people see themselves and the world around them.
While social media can encourage creativity, self-expression, and global connection, it also has
the power to shape attitudes, values, and behavior—sometimes in ways that young people may
not fully realize. The primary goal of choosing this topic is to explore and identify the types of
effects of social media on a variety of aspects in the lives of Omani young people.
