Topic Discussion

The document outlines a homework assignment for the Aircraft Structure Analysis course at the Ho Chi Minh University of Technology, focusing on the torsion of beams. It includes a problem statement requiring the calculation of the angle of twist and maximum shear stress in a wing cross-section subjected to a torque of 10 kN.m. The calculations involve given data such as shear modulus and dimensions of the closed and open sections.

1. Problem
Find the angle of twist per unit length in the wing whose cross-section is shown in
Fig., when it is subjected to a torque of 10 kN.m. Find also the maximum shear stress
in the section.
2
G=25000 N / mm

Wall 12 (outer)=900 m m
2
Nose cell area=20000 mm

Given data:

Torque: T = 10000000 [Link]

Shear modulus: G=25000 N / mm2

Closed section (nose cell):

Area: A=20000 mm2

Outer wall length: souter =900 mm

Outer wall thickness: t outer =1.5 mm

Vertical web length (wall 1-2): sweb =3 00 mm

Vertical web thickness: t web =1.5 mm

Open section (tail):

Top wall length (wall 1-3): s13=6 00 mm

Vertical wall length (wall 3-4): s34=300 mm

3
Thickness:): t open=2 mm

Calculate angle of twist:

Since the closed cell governs the torsional stiffness, we calculate the angle of twist
applied for the closed section:
θ T ds
=
L 4A G
2 ∮ t

With the integral being:

s s
∮ dst = t outer + t web = 900 +
300
1.5 1.5
=800
outer web

Then we obtain the angle of twist per unit length:

θ
=
T
L 4A G
2 ∮ ds
=
10000000
t 4 × 20000 × 25000

Calculate maximum shear stress in the closed cell (τ closed):

First, we find the constant shear flow (q) in the closed cell:
T 10000000
q= = =250 N /mm
2 A 2 ×20000

q
Shear stress is the shear flow divided by the wall thickness (τ closed = )

τ closed = =166.67 N /mm

Calculate maximum shear stress in the open cell (τ open):

Due to compatibility, the open section must twist by the exact same amount as the
closed section. The maximum shear stress in a thin-walled open section due to a
known angle of twist is:
θ
τ open=G⋅ t open ⋅
L

τ open=25000 ⋅2⋅ 0.0002=10 N /mm
