Tutorial Revision (Applied Statistics)

The document contains a series of statistical problems focused on constructing confidence intervals for various population parameters, including means and proportions. It provides specific data sets and sample sizes for calculating 95% and 90% confidence intervals for heights, task times, social media usage, transportation usage, weights, IQ scores, and customer satisfaction. Additionally, it includes a problem on determining the required sample size for estimating a population proportion with a specified margin of error.

Stats tut revision 1

Question 1.

1. A sample of 36 students has a mean height of 175 cm with a standard deviation of 5 cm. Construct a
95% confidence interval for the population mean height.

2. A researcher collected the following data on the time spent on a task (in minutes):

Data: 12, 15, 18, 10, 14, 17, 11, 16, 13, 19, 20, 8

Calculate a 95% and 90% confidence interval for the population mean time spent on the task,
assuming the population standard deviation is unknown.

3. A researcher wants to estimate the average amount of time spent on social media per day. A
sample of 49 people has a mean of 2 hours with a standard deviation of 0.5 hours. Construct a 90%
confidence interval for the population mean.

4 A researcher wants to estimate the proportion of people who use public transportation. A sample of
300 people has 120 people who use public transportation. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the
population proportion.

5. The average weight of a sample of 25 bags of sugar is 2.5 kg with a standard deviation of 0.1 kg.
Construct a 99% confidence interval for the population mean weight.

6. A researcher wants to estimate the average IQ score of a population. A sample of 64 people has a
mean IQ score of 105 with a standard deviation of 10. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the
population mean IQ score.

7. The variance of a sample of 20 products is 4 kg^2. Construct a 99% confidence interval for the
population variance.

8. A researcher wants to estimate the variance of the time spent on a task. A sample of 30 workers
has a variance of 0.04 hours^2. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the Variability.

9. A sample of 100 people has 40 people who support a new policy. Construct a 95% confidence
interval for the population proportion.

10. A researcher wants to estimate the proportion of people who smoke. A sample of 200 people has
50 smokers. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the population proportion.

11. A company wants to estimate the proportion of customers who are satisfied with their service.
From a pilot study, it was found that 70% of customers are satisfied (p = 0.7). Calculate the required
sample size to estimate the population proportion with a margin of error of 0.03 at a 95% confidence
level.
