Chapter # 1: Introduction to Computers
Overview of Computer Basics
Definition of a Computer: A computer is an electronic device that processes data,
performing a wide range of tasks according to a set of instructions known as programs.
History of Computers
Early Mechanical Computers: Examples include the abacus and Charles Babbage's
Analytical Engine.
Evolution to Digital Computers: Transition from mechanical to electronic systems, such
as ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) on Feb. 14, 1946.
Modern Computers: The development of microprocessors in the 1970s led to the PCs
we use today.
Importance of Computers
Education: Online learning, research, educational software.
Healthcare: Medical records, diagnostic tools.
Business: Data management, online transactions, meetings.
Entertainment: Streaming media, gaming, social media.
Understanding Different Types of Computers
Personal Computers (PCs): Desktops (stationary with monitor/system unit) and
Laptops (portable integrated units).
Workstations: High-performance systems for professional design, engineering, and
video editing.
Servers: Manage network resources and provide services like website hosting and data
storage.
Mainframes: Large systems used by organizations for bulk data processing and critical
transactions.
Supercomputers: Extremely fast systems for scientific calculations and weather
forecasting.
Mobile Devices: Smartphones and tablets with computing capabilities similar to PCs.
Embedded Systems: Computers integrated into devices like cars and appliances for
specific control functions.
Hardware Components
Input Devices
Keyboard: Used to input text and commands (Mechanical, Membrane; QWERTY,
AZERTY layouts).
Mouse: Pointing device (Optical, Laser) for navigating the interface.
Scanner: Converts physical documents into digital format.
Microphone: Captures audio input.
Output Devices
Monitor: Displays visual output (LCD, LED, OLED types).
Printer: Produces physical copies (Inkjet, Laser, Dot Matrix, 3D).
Speakers/Headphones: Output audio from the computer.
System Unit and Internal Components
Motherboard: The main circuit board housing the CPU and memory.
CPU (Central Processing Unit): The brain of the computer that executes instructions.
RAM (Random Access Memory): Temporary storage for data currently in use.
Storage: HDD (spinning disks) and SSD (flash memory, faster and more reliable).
Chapter # 2: Using the Computer and Managing Files
File Management
File Explorer: A utility to view and organize files/folders using the Navigation Pane, Address
Bar, and Search Box.
Operations: Creating, Renaming, Moving (Drag and Drop), Copying, and Deleting files.
Recycle Bin: Temporary storage for deleted items; allows for restoration.
Extensions: Suffixes like .docx (Word), .pdf (Document), .jpg (Image), .mp4 (Video),
and .exe (Executable) that indicate file types.
Data Storage
Internal Storage: Built-in drives (HDD/SSD).
External Storage: Removable devices like USB Flash Drives and SD Cards.
Cloud Storage: Online services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive.
Chapter # 4: Microsoft Office (MS Word)
MS Word is a word-processing software used to create, edit, and format documents.
Key Sections
File Section: Manage documents (New, Open, Save, Print, Export).
Home Section: Formatting text (Font, Size, Bold/Italic, Paragraph alignment, Styles).
Insert Section: Add elements like Tables, Pictures, Shapes, Headers/Footers, and Page
Numbers.
Design & Layout: Themes, Watermarks, Margins, Orientation, and Columns.
References & Mailings: Table of Contents, Citations, Footnotes, and Mail Merges.
Review & View: Spell check, Thesaurus, Track Changes, and Document View modes.
Chapter # 3: Short Skills
Email & Social Media
Overview of creating accounts on Gmail, Outlook, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
Includes best practices for security like strong passwords and Two-Factor Authentication
(2FA).
Internet & AI
Introduction to web browsers, search engines (Google, Bing), and AI tools like ChatGPT,
Perplexity, and Gemini for research and content creation.
Typing Basics
Introduction to the QWERTY layout, Home Row position (ASDF/JKL;), and the importance
of touch typing and muscle memory.
