Experiment 1

Aim

To study the foundry shop and various casting processes.

Apparatus/Tools

Sand, moulding box, pattern, ladle, crucible, tongs.

Theory

Casting is a manufacturing process in which molten metal is poured into a mould cavity and allowed to
solidify. Common casting methods include sand casting, die casting, and investment casting.

Procedure

1. Prepare the sand mould using pattern.

2. Assemble the moulding box.

1
3. Pour molten metal into the cavity.
4. Allow it to cool and solidify.

Result

The casting process and foundry tools were studied successfully.

Experiment 2

Aim

To study pattern making tools and different types of patterns.

Tools

Single piece pattern, split pattern, match plate pattern.

Theory

Patterns are replicas of the final product used to prepare mould cavities.

Result

Various types of patterns and their applications were understood.

Experiment 3

Aim

To study welding shop and different welding processes.

Theory

Welding is a joining process where metals are fused by heat with or without pressure.

Types of Welding

• Gas Welding
• Arc Welding
• TIG and MIG Welding

Result

Different welding processes and equipment were studied.

2
Experiment 4

Aim

To perform gas welding on a butt joint.

Apparatus

Gas welding set, filler rod, safety goggles.

Procedure

1. Clean the edges of metal plates.

2. Adjust gas flame.
3. Weld the plates carefully.

Result

A sound gas welded butt joint was prepared.

Experiment 5

Aim

To perform arc welding on a lap/butt joint.

Apparatus

Arc welding machine, electrode, gloves.

Result

Arc welding joint was prepared successfully.

Experiment 6

Aim

To study machining shop and machine tools.

Machines Studied

Lathe, drilling machine, milling machine.

3
Result

Working principles of machine tools were understood.

Experiment 7

Aim

To perform facing and turning operations on a lathe machine.

Result

Facing and turning operations were performed accurately.

Experiment 8

Aim

To perform drilling and tapping operations.

Result

Holes were drilled and tapped as per requirement.

Experiment 9

Aim

To study sheet metal tools and operations.

Operations

Shearing, bending, punching.

Result

Sheet metal operations were studied.

4
Experiment 10

Aim

To study safety practices in manufacturing workshop.

Result

Safety rules and precautions were understood.

Viva Questions (Sample)

1. What is casting?
2. Difference between gas welding and arc welding?
3. What is the function of a lathe machine?
