CHEMICAL SOLUTIONS – COMPLETE MASTER

NOTES (JEE + BOARDS)

This document covers the chapter 'Solutions' from zero to advanced level, including theory,
formulas, PYQs, traps, and examples.

1. BASIC DEFINITIONS

Solution: Homogeneous mixture of two or more components.

Solvent: Component present in larger amount.

Solute: Component present in smaller amount.

2. TYPES OF SOLUTIONS

Gas in gas, liquid in liquid, solid in liquid, etc.

3. CONCENTRATION TERMS

Molarity (M) = moles of solute / volume of solution in liters

Molality (m) = moles of solute / mass of solvent in kg

Normality (N) = equivalents / liter

4. HENRY'S LAW

p = kH x where p = partial pressure, x = mole fraction

5. RAOULT'S LAW

p1 = x1 * p1°

6. COLLIGATIVE PROPERTIES

Relative lowering of vapor pressure

Elevation in boiling point: ∆Tb = Kb m

Depression in freezing point: ∆Tf = Kf m

Osmotic pressure: π = CRT

7. PYQ EXAMPLE

Find molarity of solution containing 5g NaCl in 500 mL solution.

Solution: moles = 5/58.5 ≈ 0.0855, M = 0.0855 / 0.5 = 0.171 M

8. COMMON JEE TRAPS

Confusing molarity with molality.

Temperature dependence of molarity.

9. BOARD LEVEL QUESTIONS

Define molality and give its formula.

END OF NOTES – Revise multiple times for mastery.
