● We use inversion for emphasis and a more formal register

● We have to change the normal subject-verb order

1. After negative and restrictive words:


○ Not only does he study hard, but he also works full-time.
○ Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.
2. With so and such:
○ So difficult was the exam that many students failed.
○ Such was her surprise that she couldn’t speak.
3. In formal contexts (should, had, were):
○ Should you need help, just call me.
○ Had I known, I would have arrived earlier.
4. With only after, only when, only by, etc.:
○ Only after finishing his work did he relax.
