The report by Paul Chanda investigates the causes and effects of load shedding in Kamwala South, Lusaka, focusing on energy supply challenges faced by residents. Key findings indicate that low water levels in dams, high electricity demand, and over-reliance on hydroelectric power contribute to frequent power outages, negatively impacting businesses and quality of life. Recommendations include investing in alternative energy sources and improving infrastructure to enhance electricity reliability.

INTRODUCTION
Energy is the ability or capacity of doing work. And it is one of the
most important resources needed for the being progress of
modern society. It adds an important vital role in our daily life by
supporting activities such as cooking, lighting, industrial use eg
fuel for engines, transportation, communication and agriculture
purposes.
Background
Kamwala south is an area located in Lusaka, Zambia's capital city
where energy plays an important role in people's daily life and
local development, like the urban Lusaka areas most homes and
industry businesses in the Kamwala south depend on energy
supplies through the managing Zambia electricity supply co-
operation [ZESCO]. Somehow, Zambia's electricity supplies are
facing ongoing challenges that spoil supply availability even in
urban areas like Kamwala south where households experience
frequent power rationing and disruption [load shedding] due to
shortages in availability. These challenges are disturbing the
society, families in Kamwala south are starting to use alternatives
such as solar panels and solar lanterns.
aim
to this study Is to find out the sources, availability and reliability
of energy in Kamwala South, Lusaka and to learn more about the
challenges related to energy supplies in this residential area.

Objectives
- To identify the main supplier of energy used in the Kamwala
south.
- To check then access the reliability of energy supply in the
Kamwala South Lusaka, Zambia.
Location
Kamwala South is a residential suburb in Lusaka city, Zambia. It
stands adjacent to new Kamwala and Hollywood areas and has
been situated in Lusaka province. The coordinates of Kamwala
South are [15° 26' S] and [28° 18' E] lat longitude.
Chapter 2
Literature review
Energy is the reliable factor in social and economic development.
Zambia joins other geography and energy studies – electricity is
mainly supplied to households, industries, schools & hospitals. In
other developing states mining zones electricity supply is mainly
dependent through hydro electric power HEP – from the lake
Kariba which makes electricity prices highly volatile on marginal
patterns.
Causes of load shedding
- low water levels in dams – due to drought and reduced rainfall
patterns
- high demand for electricity – especially in urban residential
areas
- over dependence on hydro electric power (HEP) – it is the main
source for electricity in these residential areas
Effects of load shedding
- affects businesses leading to loss of income and reduced
productivity that leads to a loss.
- lowers income and reduces the quality of life for individuals.
- problems to household activities such as cooking, lighting &
studying etc.
Chapter 3
Methodology
Primary data
At the point of time researchers are supposed to go into the field
to obtain information on load management in specific school
areas.
Field Summary Note Book
While in the field the researchers will use the note book to write
down every vital information related to have a good project.
Camera
This will be used to take pictures of the features in the study area
that will be used in the project.
Observation
At the time of the research we’ll go into the field with residents
who supply and buy energy just for observations.
Record
This will be used to record whatever conversations the researcher
will obtain from the people in the study area.
Interview’s Schedule
The researcher will be given a scheduled appointment with one of
the teachers at Libala stage 3 secondary school who will give out
information on how the school operates.

Marital Status
Question related the project
1. What is load management ?
2. Which type of energy you buy and use ?
3. How does load shedding affect the society ?
4. How does load shedding come about ?
5. In what ways can the government help improve load shedding ?
6. How long does load shedding take in a day ?
7. How often does power cuts in Kamwala South ?
8. Which type of energy source do you use when power cuts ?
9. In what manner does load shedding affect your business ?
10. What would you suggest to reduce / minimize load shedding ?

*Data Presentation*
After getting information it was analysed in order to capture the
way that would be understandable.
The information has been presented in the form of flow charts and
pie charts.
This chapter illustrates the findings established through the data
that was obtained from the responding respondents.

*Table 1-3 Shows the understanding of land management
Interpretation
The information above shows that business residents affected by
land management Kamwala south because people depend more
on electricity than solar energy for daily activities.

Data analysis
below shows data of several major causes of load management.
Causes
- Limited power availability capacity.
- High demand of electricity due to population growth.
- Low water supplies in hydroelectric dams.
- Poor maintenance infrastructure.
Effects
- Low productivity levels in industries.
- Loss of income for businesses.
- High usage of charcoal and generator.
- Disruption of learning in schools.
The above effects can slow down economic development and
growth and will also affect people’s standard of life.
Conclusion: Recommendation, Problems & Limitations
Load shedding is experienced when electricity supply cannot
meet its demand. It mainly results from low power generation and
increasing electricity usage.

Recommendation
How to decrease load management; the following measures are
recommended.
- Solar and wind energy investments.
- Additional construction of power station infrastructure.
- Improving maintenance of electricity conductors.
- Promoting energy conservation among the consumers.
Problems
- Not so much limited time for research.
- location: some respondents were willing to answer questions.
- Difficulties accessing all the necessary electricity data.
Limitations
The field research was focusing on a small area known as
Kamwala south, in results the information collected isn't
representing the entire country or city.
Bibliography or Reference
- In the research geography textbooks were used on energy
resources.
- Government energy reports.
- Zambia electricity supply corporation [ZESCO limited]
publications.
