Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Sewage Treatment Plant
(STP) Operation
1. Objective:
The objective of this SOP is to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Sewage Treatment
Plant (STP) to treat and purify sewage effectively, protecting the environment and public health.
2. Scope:
This SOP covers the routine operation of the STP, including daily checks, maintenance, and
emergency procedures. It applies to all personnel involved in STP operation.
3. Responsibilities:
• STP Operator: Responsible for day-to-day operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the
STP.
• Supervisor: Oversees STP operation and ensures compliance with the SOP.
• Maintenance Team: Conducts periodic maintenance and repairs as required.
• Safety Officer: Ensures safety protocols are followed during STP operation.
4. Equipment and Materials:
• RSTP (Raw Sewage Transfer Pump)
• Screw Pumps
• Treated Water Pumps
• Primary BACTERIO Tank (BT)
• Equalization Tank
• Aeration Tank
• STLR Tube Tank
• Filter Feed Tank
• Sludge Filter
• Activated Carbon Filter
• Treated Water Tank
• Chemicals (e.g., Acerbic, Chlorine)
• Safety equipment (PPE, safety signs, fire extinguishers)
5. Operational Procedures:
5.1. Start-Up Procedure:
• Ensure all safety equipment is in place, and personnel wear appropriate PPE.
• Check the availability of chemicals (Acerbic and Chlorine) and stock levels.
• Start the RSTP pumps and ensure they are functioning correctly.
• Verify the water levels in the equalization tank and primary BACTERIO tank (BT).
• Begin the aeration process in the aeration tank.

• Start the STLR Tube Tank and filter feed tank.
• Monitor the flow rates and levels at each stage of the treatment process.
• Ensure the treated water pumps are operational.
5.2. Daily Operation:
• Conduct visual inspections of all equipment and machinery for any signs of leaks, damage,
or abnormal noise.
• Monitor water levels in tanks and sumps.
• Check and record the dosing of Acerbic and Chlorine as per the daily requirements.
• Monitor the flow rates and quality of treated water.
• Inspect and clean bucket screens at the collection sump.
• Perform backwash of filters as required.
• Clean grease traps daily.
• Empty dried sludge and hand it over to gardeners.
• Maintain records of meter readings and other relevant data.
• Check stock levels of chemicals and report to the supervisor if reordering is necessary.
• Ensure all electrical switchgear is functioning correctly.
• Clean settlers of floating and settled sludge.
• Maintain cleanliness in the STP area.
5.3. Emergency Procedures:
• In case of equipment malfunction or failure, immediately shut down the affected
equipment and report it to the supervisor.
• In the event of chemical spills, follow the established chemical spill response procedures.
• In the case of fire or electrical emergencies, follow the plant's emergency evacuation
procedures.
• If there is a sudden increase in sewage inflow, notify the supervisor and take necessary
actions to prevent overflow.
6. Documentation:
• Maintain a logbook to record daily activities, including dosing of chemicals, equipment
checks, and maintenance tasks.
• Keep records of meter readings, stock levels, and any incidents or emergencies.
• Maintain records of equipment maintenance and repairs.
7. Training:
All personnel involved in STP operation should receive proper training in equipment operation,
safety protocols, and emergency procedures.
