The human digestive system breaks down food into nutrients for energy, growth, and repair, starting in the mouth and continuing through the esophagus and stomach. Most nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine, assisted by the liver and pancreas, while the large intestine absorbs water and stores waste. A healthy diet is crucial for maintaining digestive health.

Biology Class Notes – The Human Digestive System
The human digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into nutrients that the
body can use for energy, growth, and repair. The digestive process begins in the mouth, where
food is chewed and mixed with saliva. Saliva contains enzymes that start breaking down
carbohydrates.

After swallowing, food travels through the esophagus and enters the stomach. The stomach
uses acids and digestive enzymes to further break down food into a semi-liquid substance.
From the stomach, food moves into the small intestine, where most nutrients are absorbed into
the bloodstream.

The liver and pancreas also help digestion by producing important chemicals and enzymes.
The large intestine absorbs water and stores waste until it leaves the body.

Important Facts:

 Digestion starts in the mouth.

 The small intestine is the main area for nutrient absorption.
 The liver produces bile to help digest fats.
 Water absorption mainly happens in the large intestine.
 A healthy diet improves digestive health.

Conclusion:
The digestive system is essential for human survival because it provides the nutrients and
energy needed for daily life.
