1 Scope of Application

This standard prescribes for the basic profiles and basic sizes of the metric screw
threads (hereafter abbreviated to screw threads) used in CANON, and the
dimensional deviations and tolerances.

2 Definitions of Terms

'Basic profile' is defined as the geometry of thread for one pitch that provides the
basis for establishing the actual geometry of the thread. 'Basic sizes' are defined
as the numerical values of the main dimensions that are determined for a screw
having the basic profile.

3 Series of Screw Threads

The series of screw threads to be used in CANON are given in Table 1, and
Attached Table 1 gives the pitch for a particular nominal diameter and screw thread
series.

Table 1—Screw thread series

Series Nominal dia Remarks
Coarse screw 1.2 to 20 mm For machine screws and
thread general screws
Fine screw 10 to 150 mm For general screws
thread
Extrafine 4 to 150 mm For general screws
screw thread
Special pitch 1.4 to 2.6 mm For machine screws (for
screw thread plastic parts)

4 Basic Profile and Formula

4.1 The basic profile and formula for the coarse screw threads are in conformity
with those as illustrated in Fig. 1 on the next page.

4.2 The basic profile and formula for the fine and extrafine screw threads are as
shown in Fig. 2.

Thick full line shows basic profile.

H = 0.8660P d2 = d H1 D = d D1 = d1
H 1 = 0.6495P d 1 = d 2H 1 D2 = d2 D’ 1 = d 1 + 2 x H/16
r = 0.1083P

4.3 The basic profile and formula for the special pitch screw threads are as shown
in Fig. 3.

Thick full line shows basic profile.

H = 0.8660P d2 = d H1 D = d D1 = d1
h = 0.8660Q d1 = d 2h 1 D2 = d2 D’ 1 = d 1 + 2 x H/16
H 1 = 0.6495P
h 1 = 0.6495Q
r = 0.1083Q Q is the pitch for coarse screw thread.

Fig. 3—Basic profile and formula for special pitch screw threads

5 Basic Sizes

The basic sizes of the coarse, fine, extrafine, and special pitch screw threads are
as given in Tables 2 to 5, respectively.

6 Classes, Dimensional Deviations, and Tolerances

The screw threads other than the special pitch ones can be divided into two classes,
Precision and Medium, by the tolerance zone provided. Attached Tables 6 to 11
give the dimensional deviations and tolerances for the respective series and classes
of screw threads. For the special pitch screw threads, only the Medium is
specified, and the dimensional deviations and tolerances are given in Table 12.
The screw threads that are usually used in CANON are of Medium, regardless of
series.

Note 1 As a general rule, a slight clearance is provided between the crest of
external thread and the root of internal thread as shown in Fig. 1 and the
following figures.
Note 2 The parenthesized nominal diameters are those which must not be taken
whenever possible.
Note a ) The value of minor diameter of internal thread provides the size of D' 1 in
Fig. 2, and the minor diameter D 1 is used as the basic size for the
dimensional deviations.

Note: This table specifies no deviations for angle of thread and pitch, however,
they are included in the tolerance for pitch diameter by making
conversion.
Note a ) The lower deviation for major diameter of internal thread is not specified,
however, as shown in Fig. 1, a slight clearance is provided between the
root and the major diameter of external thread as a general rule.
Note b ) The upper deviation for major diameter of internal thread is not specified.

Note The lower deviation for major diameter of internal thread is not specified,
however, as shown in Fig. 2, a slight clearance is generally provided
between the root and the major diameter of external thread as a general
rule.
b)
Note The upper deviation for major diameter of internal thread is not specified.
c)
Note The lower deviation for minor diameter of internal thread is the value
calculated by 2 x H/16 and rounded to 0.005 mm or 0.010 mm.

Points of Revision in 1996

1 Main Revised Contents

The CS reviewing WG 1996 discussed mainly about whether this standard
corresponds to the present situation. As a result of this, the screws that had been
specified not to be used from 1968 and on as a general rule have been deleted, and
the Classes of screws have been made to conform to the JIS ones.

2 Major Points of Revision

2.1 Cover

The cover has been newly added to clarify the technology classification, secrecy
classification, observance classification, and application classification.

2.2 Screw s Added or Deleted

Added screws : M1 x 0.2, M2.5 x 0.45

M6 x 0.75, M8 x 0.75, and M9 x 0.75
Deleted screws : M3 x 0.6, M4 x 0.75, and M5 x 0.9

2.3 Tolerance Classes

Class 1 has been changed to Precision Class.

Class 2 has been changed to Medium Class.
