Printers

Printers give you
something you
Most computer can
users can’t •touch, carry, and share

Printed documents Three types of
Content in are essential in printers are
most workplaces, popular
Hands where people •dot matrix, ink jet, and
must share laser
•reports, budgets,
memos, and other
types of information.
3
Impact printers
• Generate output by striking the
paper
• Uses an inked ribbon
• Most common
• Dot Matrix
Commonly • Line Printer and Band Printers
Used Printers
Non-impact printers
• Use methods other than force
• Tend to be quiet and fast
• Most Common
• Ink jet and Laser
4
Can produce sheets of plain text
very quickly
Used to print to multi-sheet pages
Dot
Printing on wide-sheet paper
Print head strikes inked ribbon
Matrix Speed measured in characters per
second (CPS)
Printer
Dot Matrix Printhead
Mechanism
Print head Mechanism
which contains a cluster (or matrix) of short pins arranged
in one or more columns.
Printer can push any of the pins out in any
combination.
By pushing out pins in various combinations, the print
head can create alphanumeric characters
Forms a character by creating a series of dots.
5
How is Image created? 6
When pushed out from the duster, the protruding pins’
ends strike a ribbon
which is held in place between the print head and the
paper.
When the pins strike the ribbon, they press ink from the
ribbon onto the paper.
More pins that a print head contains, the higher the
printer’s resolution
Slowest dot matrix printers create 50 to 70 cps
Fastest more than 500 cps

7
Line Printers 8
Special type of impact printer.
Uses a special wide print head
that can print an entire line of
text at one time
Do not offer high resolution but
are incredibly fast;
Fastest can print 3,000 lines of
text per minute.
Band 9
Printers
a rotating band embossed with
alphanumeric characters.
machine rotates the band to the
desired character then a small
hammer taps the band, pressing
the character against a ribbon.
Very fast and very robust.
Can generate 2,000 lines of text per
minute
10
Band Printers
11
can print on multi-part stationery
make carbon-copies.
Impact Lowest printing cost per page
Printers As the ink is running out, the printout
Advantages gradually fades rather than suddenly
stopping partway through a job.
Good, reliable workhorses ideal for use
in situations where printed content is
more important than quality.
Ink ribbon also does not easily dry out
12
Creates noise when the pins or
typeface strike the ribbon to the
paper.
Can only print lower-resolution
graphics, with limited color
Impact Printers performance, limited quality, and
Disadvantages lower speeds compared to non-
impact printers.
Single-sheet paper may have to be
wound in and aligned by hand,
which is relatively time-consuming
Ink Jet 13
Printers
Non-impact printer
Inexpensive home
printer
Sprays ink onto
paper
Speed measured in

Quality expressed as

Working of
Ink Jet Printer 14
1. Print head having four ink
cartridges moves
2. Software instructs where to
apply dots of ink, which color
and what quantity to use
3. Electrical pulses are sent to
the resistors behind each
nozzle
4. Vapor bubbles of ink are
formed by resistors and the
ink is forced to the paper
through nozzles
5. A matrix of dots forms
characters and pictures.
6. Color cartridge showing inkjet
nozzles.
15
Color output common using CMYK
• Cyan, Magenta, yellow, black
Expensive maintenance is rare
Ink Jet
Printer
Ink cartridge need to be changed
often used to print pictures taken with a digital
camera
16
Quieter in operation than impact
dot matrix
Can print finer, smoother details
through higher print head resolution
Ink Jet
Photographic-quality printing are
Printer widely available.
Advantages
Practically no warm up time, and
Lower cost per page.
Non-impact printer
Works on a similar process as
photocopier
Laser is at the heart of these
Laser printers.
Produces high quality documents

17
How Laser Creates an 18
Image
(1) Paper is fed and the drum rotates.
(2) A laser beam conveys information from the
computer to a rotating mirror and thus an image is
created on the drum.
(3) The charges on the drum are ionized and the
toner sticks to the drum.
(4) Toner is transferred from drum to paper.
(5) Heat is applied to fuse the toner on the paper
19
Laser Printer
Working
Works like a single-color model,
except that the process is
repeated four times and a
different toner color is used for
Laser
each pass.
Four colors used are the same as
Color in the color ink jet printers
Cyan
Printing Magenta
Yellow and
Black.
20
Black color printers typically can
produce 4 -16 ppm.
For printing graphics, the output
can be a great deal slower.
Most have resolutions of 300 or 600
Laser dpi, both horizontally and
vertically, but some high-end
Printing models have resolutions of 1,200 or
1,800 dpi.
Require new toner cartridges after
a few thousand pages,

Plotters
A plotter is a special kind of output device. It is like a printer
because it produces images on paper, but the plotter is
typically used to print large-format images, such as
construction drawings created by an architect.
24
Flatbed Plotter
A flatbed plotter plots on
papers that are spread and
fixed over a rectangular flatbed
surface.
Normally, the paper do not
move, and all the motion is
provided by pen – holding
mechanism.
The pen mechanism moves the
pen left, right, top and bottom
side.
The plot size is restricted by the
area of the bed.
It is used to draw Cars, Ships,
Airplanes ,Road and highway
design etc.
25
Drum Plotter
A Drum Plotter contain a
pen, drum, paper and ink for
output.
Drum rotates the page and
pen draw the image on the
paper.
The drum rotates to change
the position of the paper.
Under the control of the
computer, the drum and the
pen(s) move simultaneously
to produce the graphic or
design.
